  • What an amazing bonus episode we have for you this week! Mike Flanagan, one of the best horror writer/directors working today, joins us for an extended chat on Doctor Sleep. His Director's Cut is now available on HBO Max, and we dive into many of the details surrounding a director's cut and how they get made. He tells a number of amazing stories from behind the scenes ranging from that horrifying Jacob Tremblay scene to negotiating The Shining's influence on the movie with Stephen King, and much more.
While we had him on the line, we also had to discuss the upcoming "sequel" to The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor. Mike gets into where exactly they're headed for the anthology series, how they are NOT trying to one-up episode 6 (you know the one), and confirms that it will be coming out later this year.

I just want to say Thank You to everyone involved in this video! Doctor Sleep was my favorite film of 2019 so this was an absolute blast to watch. The movie is so creative, and yes I know a lot of that is due to King's unrivaled imagination, but Flanagan's execution and changes made for this adaption are to a level that took my breath away while watching the film multiple times. I'm not actually a fan of the Shining, but that's how good Doctor Sleep is to me, that it retroactively makes the Shining a more interesting (and more importantly) scary film. I have been talking this film up since its release and am so happy people are finally catching on. It is a masterpiece. One of my favorite moments of this video is when you all ask if Mike can stay on a little longer and Mike is trying to cover his smile because he doesn't want to bask in all the well deserved compliments, and it made me tear up because all any artist wants is for their art to connect to an audience, and Mr. Flanagan if you're reading this: Doctor Sleep has and will continue to connect, move, inspire, scare and delight audiences for a very long time, and I believe one day it will be spoken of with the same regard as the original film. And Doctor Sleep deserves it. So, Thank You again. And I hope and pray you will be able to bring Hallorann to life too in equally stellar fashion!

MrHootiedean totally agree. Tied with parasite for best film of 2019. Can’t believe some people didn’t like this film. I bought the Blu-ray right when it came out

Director’s cut is by far the superior cut! Amazing!

I’m trying to figure out I’ve seen the director’s cut. I’ve watched it two or three times at home & I saw it in the theaters when it came out. Going to purposely look for the director’s cut.
      I love Mike Flanagan

Interesting Steven king loved doctor sleep, but he really didn't like the shining at all, and he's said so in interviews. I think doctor sleep is probably a more faithful adaption of the book.

Thanks for a great interview! I loved Doctor Sleep, both as the theatrical cut and even more as the director’s cut. This was a real treat!

Great interview. Very insightful and some wonderful anecdotes about the filming process.
For me it was THE film of last year. Stunning follow up.
Only thing that grips me is that the Directors Cut was not done in 4k for the Blu Ray.
As a fan of physical media I would love to have a 4k version of the Directors Cut.

Awesome upload , excellent questions and fascinating answers.
Love Flannagan's stuff. I don't really care what genre he directs , A-ok if he decides to stick with horror for the next 50 years. He's brilliant with adaptations as well as original concepts.
Wish they'd hire him whenever a studio decide to adapt any of King's works. lol

just compared the theatrical and DC in the Jacob Tremblay scene and only difference I saw was initial blood splatter to his face. towards the end of the scene the amount of blood on his face in both cuts is same. so I do wonder if they did hold back more of that scene in the DC

I think though in the the long run, this film because of his other great projects will have more success post theater release , it’s amazing there even going this deep into the movie way after release. Definitely going to rewatch
