Midnight Mass doesn’t even get 10% of the love it deserves, I’m just going to say it.
100% agree. It is a masterpiece.
I enjoyed it. Need to watch it again
I try not to get too sycophantic about any creators/celebrities bc we don’t *really* know them, but with Mike Flanagan I can’t help but just adore him. I can’t think of a currently working filmmaker whose art I connect with more. Truly one of a kind, I’m so lucky to be alive during the Flanagan period of horror. Watching this giggling and kicking my feet!
We're kicking our feet with excitement too!
Mike is my nerd crush! My husband is probably tired of hearing me talk about him! 😹Love his wife as well!
This is how celebrity culture is created.
"I don't like doing that but x is the exception"
The realization on his face when the connection was made there. Wow!
Right? Amazing moment!
Even he couldn't believe he was that deep
I can't believe Mike Flanagan directed absentia. When he said he made his first indie film called that it hit me like a ton of bricks, I watched it as a kid and never realized who the director was till now!
It's midnight and I'm screaming at the top of my lungs bc I FREAKING LOVE MIKE FLANAGAN
I could listen to him talk about his craft and his influences for hours, close tie between him and Del Toro. One of my favourite horror doc contributors, too.
agreed!
I watched Midnight Mass when I was 21 and honestly , it is one of most influential pieces of media in my life. I grew up in the Southern Bible Belt where we were told not to judge as people judged with the Bible under nose. That series was such a good dissection of the surface area most people hide behind (religion, status, etc.) and showed the ugly truths to us all. While at the same time, highlighting the beauty of sacrifice and how sometimes the rise of the Sun is our true end. Such a good series and such a wonderful interview.
As a still-practicing Catholic AND an alcoholic, I adored Midnight Mass.
I grew up as Christian in a Mennonite and Amish community and I could also empathize with every character in Midnight Mass. The genius of that series is you can relate to every character because they are so fleshed out.
Mike not only is one of my favorite horror directors, is one of my favorite directors, period.
I love every movie and TV show he made.
I love that Poe was fighting online battles before the internet!
I can’t wait for this one, love Mike Flanagan’s work 🖤
We do too!!
He's great to listen to - knows genre inside and out and always has unusual insights!!
Hope you all enjoy this ep!!! We loved it! Mike is so open, deep and sincere… Love his honest in the moment insights
He's the best!
Mike (and his wife Kate as well) have some of the best interviews!
This podcast popped up because of Mike Flanagan and his work is so good in horror, it goes to the human condition and is written, directed, and acted very well. Hope there is more coming out.
Really enjoyed this one! Mike is such a cool, down to earth guy. It's insane how consistently enjoyable everything he makes is, and I love how he seamlessly blends horror with heavy emotional beats without diluting the effectiveness of either one. Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep (especially the director's cut) were both incredible, and I can't wait to see what he does with The Life of Chuck.
I also can't help but think of David F. Sandberg with his similar career trajectory. Both had early success with original films based on shorts they made (Oculus and Lights Out), both directed franchise prequels that were vastly superior to the original entries (Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation), and both have gone on to bigger success, Mike with the string of Netflix bangers and David with the big budget Shazam movies for DC. Plus, they're both super chill dudes who just love making movies. Also, David's TH-cam channel (ponysmasher) is an absolute gold mine for anyone interested in film-making.
(Not so subtly implying that I'd love to see David on the podcast, lol)
Such a great conversion!! Loved how the questions really got you all talking about the thought process that goes into such great shows and movies like Flanagan's work.
You gotta bring this podcast up more often on Dead Meat, James. Should be way more subs (I'm sure it'll grow exponentially in the near future regardless though). Some great episodes. I love Mike Flanagan.
Given the fact that Rebecca Klingel has written on pretty much every single one of Mike’s shows for Netflix, I would love to see him be the one to do an adaptation of Borrasca. Especially now that Creep Cast and other great channels have been giving that show more reach and the audio play with Cole Sprouse being so good, I don’t think anyone could do a better job of adapting that story to the small screen then Mike
Love Mike, this is an absolutely incredible interview, and I mean that in terms of all three/four of you.
Coming from Dead Meat with this by the way, so glad James mentioned this channel in a recent livestream.
He's the BEST
Jesus, this man is a treasure. I cannot wait to see what all he comes up with in the future. It is rare I enjoy everything a director makes but so far, all solid releases.
agreed!
He has a good eye for talent, having cast your guest from two weeks ago Heather Langenkamp in now multiple projects!
It's a community effort!
Ohhhh shoot. Mike's the man! Thanks for sharing your friends with us, makes me feel closer to the movies and series that I love
god dammit James you got me hooked on another podcast
Mission accomplished!
Muhaha welcome :)
That radiation quote is my mantra now. What a great base line for creating horror.
We thought so too!
@@ScreamDreamsPod On a scale of one to ten, how hyped are you that Mike Flanagan is directing the new dark tower tv series.
Love this - love that he took writers from NoSleep into this journey
“Jewels of truth” are precisely why I love Flanagan so, so much.
Btw, y’all are f***in geniuses❤
Yes! So cool! I loooove everything I've seen of Flanagan's, which is most at this point. You guys asked really great questions!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So excited they got the legend himself, Mike Flanagan! 🙌
This is my favourite episode so far. Mike Flanagan gives such a great interview! Really interesting questions and conversation 😊
We loved having him!
Go Flana-gang!!!!
Woohoo!!
What a genuine fellow
Really beautiful episode
Thank you for listening!
I wonder if Mike ever got round to playing Alan Wake II.
He revealed that he was a massive fan of the first game during his interview with Sam Lake, and I’m hoping he’s had a chance to enjoy the sequel.
Just finished this show last night great timing lol
Midnight Mass is my all time favorite show.
Same!! What was your fav episode?
@@ScreamDreamsPod Ep.4 Lamentations, that monologue is incredible. Outside of that, Ep.6 and the finale are also incredible. Some of the finest performances and writing I've seen.
@@TheLongestTake Ooh those are both so good!!
@ScreamDreamsPod can't say many other movie or show is capable of hitting me on an existential level like that! Ones that do end up being on my favorites list
this is so cool! what a legend
love mike!
My Dad got me started on the road to horror appreciation with the Twilight Zone, when I was 4. The Masks episode and Nightmare at 20,000 Feet gave me serious nightmares. I was even afraid to wear a mask for quite a while after The Masks episode lol
Fear is like radiation - Midnight Club (which makes the most sense)
Ah! That's right!
Great conversation so many things were touched on. Also as a new writer I always think of what my writing says subconsciously. I have no idea but seeing Mike's surprise I'm not sure I want to know exactly 🤣 that Poe M was great. The Marylander in me was very happy about this 💜
It's a highlight moment from the show for sure!
Working off the assumption that what he remembers is actually real instead of going back and watching the episode keeps the kid spirit in it I think. If he was to rewatch it, it would ruin his childhood perspective of horror. Your imagination is often scarier than reality.
The Fall of the House of Usher was brilliant!
We loved it too!
I'm a graphic designer for TV and film and working in a Mike Flanagan's production is one of my dreams. Being a grain of sand in this man's beach would be an honour.
The quote was from the Midnight Club! “Fear is like, it's like radiation. You spend enough time around enough of it, and it changes you genetically.”
Yes!
LET'S GOOOO 🖤🖤
!!!
This is so cool
thanks for watching!
I've never seen fraggle rock but I just watched the terrible tunnel and I can totally see it being scary. I was terrified of Marly's ghosts from the muppets christmas carol. The visuals aren't scary but it still puts the idea in your head of being in that situation which tbh is still scary now. Also, it's so surreal hearing Mike Flanagan talk about Candle Cove.
Honestly muppets are a fever dream- a good one- but still a fever
i was scared by that fraggle rock episode too, I might have to go looking for it now 😂
Aww, he seems pleasant😊
He's the best!
YES
This guy has completely revolutionized the horror genre. I can hardly watch just a one episode movie anymore😂
Haha yes!
This is one of the most beautiful podcast episodes I have ever seen. Mike Flanagan has made me a fan for life. Very rare to have these Hollywood star directors be this down to earth and genuine. Plus you 3 are always great as usual! Love it!! ❤
Thank you so much!
The new king of horror (to say the least)
One of many! We love him!
I love Stephen king can’t wait for that project to come out
SAME HERE!
Is that james a janise from dead meat ??😮😮

You should get sean clark on as a guest🤘🤘
We love Sean Clark! He is James and Catherine's personal appearance agent!
