    Kenny Stabler was a one-of-a-kind. He was a great college and pro QB, and it was a treat to listen to him as color commentator on the radio broadcasts with play-by-play from Eli Gold. I miss him very much.

      I loved his radio commentary. He would give such insight on how the play unfolded. Really helped me understand the game better.

      I don't why it didn't occur to me in those years to tune radio to the Snake and turn sound down on TV...esp since I worshipped him as a boy in the '70s.

    Stabler lived 3 blocks from us as kids ,he would come over to Bobby's house and there was a vacant lot next door and he would be the quarterback for both teams his daddy was a mechanic at Klumpp Chevrolet in Foley and his mother was a nurse at Dr Marvin Taylor office his childhood home is still there I can't remember if his sister moved back in or not

    Wonderful stories...I'm a University of Florida alumnus (College of Engineering '85) but I was born in Huntsville and though I only lived there for a few months before my Father (who was a Radar Guidance Engineer at Redstone Arsenal) moved us to Cocoa Beach, Fl./Cape Canaveral, Alabama still holds a special place in my heart....Roll Tide.

    Y'all notice and I have never heard of anyone messing with his throwing motion. He threw such a nice ball. Wish they wouldn't have messed with Vince Young's and Tim Tebow's throwing motion when they turned pro. Stabler to Casper, Fred B, and Branch. Pretty formidable. God bless everyone. Be Safe

      I'll never forget Joe Montana when asked early on about Tebow's throwing motion. Without even batting an eye after receiving question, he said: "Just leave it alone." Despite his heroics in '11 and 300-yds in Steeler playoff win...Tebow was going to get hosed once Elwrong got to town...looking for his proper throwing mini-me. Devils own luck, he lands Manning. If that doesn't happen, Elwrong was screwed - after he did what he and Foxy Fix did to Tim. Fk the NFL anyway now.

    The full story is even more incredible. Alabama was number four, Michigan State,with the "perfect " team led by George Webster and Bubba Smith was number one. Arkansas was number two, and in the midst of a 25 game inning streak,and Nebraska was number three, with one of Bob Devaney's typical powerhouses. Needless tosay, all three were unbeaten, and all l were favored against their adversaries.Both Michigan State, which was at least a two touchdown favorite against number five UCLA , with Gary Beban and Mel Farr, in the Rose Bowl, and Arkansas, which was favored against a pretty ordinary LSU team in the Cotton Bowl., were upset, MSU 14 to12, when UCLA"S Bob Stiles knocked himself unconscious keeping Bob"The Bull " Apisa out of the end zone to avert a 14 to 14 tie and Arkansas 14 to 7., by fumbling twice within their own five yard line. With number one and number two both knocked out,Alabama could claim a share of the national championship if they beat mighty Nebraska. Bear Bryant told Kenny Stabler and Steve Sloan that he wanted them to play every down as if they were behind by three touchdowns. they proceeded to do just that, and The Tide won 39 to 28

    Bryant always said he was a poor coach of a great talent give him the one thats a good person and the one that no what he got and I think he coach talent to maybe a little modest but he wanted players that had heart and that cares about winning and losing it's easy to be a captain when everything is going good but u find out who's the heart of your team when u no the games over then u find out is going to quit on u remember sometimes the loser is actually the winners people or fans love effort alot oflegends didn't have talent they never quit

    First heard of Ken Stabler listening to the radio broadcast of the Cotton Bowl in 1968. That he emerged as QB of the Oakland Raiders made me a fan of AFL/AFC football. Did he make any money with speaking fees? He should have.

    He seems so sincere here but..."we played teams that were ALWAYS bigger, ALWAYS faster"...I'm just not buying it. What would explain such an anomaly? I can't think of how a program, consistently dominant in it's region for many years, getting totally out-recruited year after year as it one conference title and national title after another.
    I think that has been said so often that it has become gospel in the Bryant legend. The fact that Bryant inspired good players to be great doesn't have to mean he signed chopped liver. In fact, it's been said so often that I'd forgotten what kind of people Bama had on defense at the PSU Sugar Bowl. I'd forgotten how high in the NFL draft some of those guys went. Churning out OL like Dwight Stephenson and Hannah boys, QBs from Pat Trammel to Namath to Sloan to Stabler to Hunter to Rutledge to Lewis to Richard Todd, c'mon.
    Bryant supposedly said that he liked players who weren't good but didn't know it. I suspect that was a folksy exaggeration that really meant that he wanted good or great players who put team first.

    • @danielcrowe9324
      @danielcrowe9324 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 1961 National Championship team didn't have a lot of "all-stars" on the roster, but they had good players, the type that Coach Bryant liked; players who were coachable. After that team won it all, that was when the prize recruits of those days started thinking about going to Alabama.
      As for Coach Bryant, people that knew him said a lot of the same things, or maybe similar things. Keith Jackson said once, "As a reporter you have to keep the coach at arm's length; but you couldn't do that with Paul Bryant. He had a way of drawing you in." Frank Broyles described him as "probably the greatest motivator that the game has ever seen."
