Pin Head Snake every time in deed. Calling his own plays, making it happen in the wild 1970's. He wasn't a product of a coaching system, where for the most part, athletes are interchangeable.
+Pin Head Snake everytime indeed. Snake defined clutch. Also did it in an era of DOMINANT defenses and when DB's and defenders could tee off on QBs and wideouts. The Snake defined clutch
Loved the Snake. I saw him play in 1977 and he threw seven interceptions in a 30-7 loss to Denver. I even have fond memories of that, I’m sure he never forgot that day.
An all-time great, who personified the organization he represented, and one of the few great lefty-quarterbacks. God bless your soul, Mr. Stabler! You truly left a mark!
My favorite highlight was against Miami in the 1974 playoff classic. Raiders trailing 26-21, 4th down in the final seconds, Stabler was scrambling to his left as a Dolphin dove for his legs. As Stabler was going down, he threw the ball between 3 defenders for the TD!
+TRChamp08 Ken Stabler was an amazing QB in his heyday. I'm surprised that the Snake hasn't been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. Yes, Stabler had a career TD/INT ratio of 0.87 (194 TD/222 INT), but he had a much better winning record in the regular season among QBs at 96-49-1 and had a 7-5 playoff record. Had Stabler stayed 1 or 2 more years in Oakland and won one more Super Bowl ring (i.e. 1980), the Snake would've been in as the first southpaw QB. You rarely see left-handed QBs in the Pro Football HOF since Steve Young is the first and currently, the only one in. Stabler could be the second one.
+joesakic91 True, joesakic91. The snake would definitely have been in the HOF by now with another SB ring. I honestly think he deserves to be in even with just 1 ring. For his time, during the 1970's; Stabler Quarterbacked the winningest team in football. That's right. It wasn't the Steelers, the Cowboys or the Dolphins. Stabler didn't get enough credit for what he did for that Raiders team in the 1970's. Now, we are in a day where stats are so overly glorified, it seems that he'll never get in, or he'll have a very difficult time. BTW, check out the very latest # that I did on Sean Mounts after Eli's 87% completion percentage, 337 Passing Yards, 4 TD Passes, No INTs, and a 151.5 QB Rating this past Sunday. Got Heem!! :-)
Being a Dolphin fan, I watched Stabler many times and always worried when he played the Dolphins. The Snake was dangerous and very good. If I had to pick Brady,Manning or Stabler ??? Stabler all the way !!! Brady and Manning never played QB with the rules then. Defenses would head hunt QB's and that's what they played against. You think that Brady or Manning could deal with guys like Jack Lambert without crying ???
@redhead5150 great point. He pulled more rabbits out of a hat than A magician. Best clutch QB of his era. You always felt confidence that they would score near the end of the game for the win. Nobody ran a shotgun offense in those days. They mostly passed downfield, which is a riskier type of pass. Dallas, I think was one of the first, if not THE first to use the shotgun I I can’t remember what year they incorporated that. Was it late Stauback or early Danny White?
@@davidkepke1435 Roger Staubach played 3rd down plays from the "shotgun" formation under Head Coach Tom Landry before Danny White became the Cowboys' QB.

keep in mind the kind of football that was played at that time. i think Snake is #3 or #4 at worst. im glad he will be in the hall of fame. but sucks that we will never hear his HOF speech :(
People too young to remember have no idea how great he - and the entire team- was for over a decade. Better stats than Namath who is in HOF. Raiders of 1970s won 109 games in mostly 14 game seasons, only a few less than Colts 2000-2009 or Patriots playing in all 16 game seasons. Stabler was at least as clutch as Manning or Brady without any of the protection QBs enjoy today and in a defense - happy NFL era.
@ matt mcclure. Stabler was a much better "clutch" QB than Brady or Peyton Manning not only because of the great last minute big game wins Stabler had against the Dolphins in the 1974 playoffs, against the Patriots in the 1976 playoffs and against the Colts in double overtime in the 1977 playoffs, but also because Brady has never had any all-time great teams to challenge him in his NFL career which explains Brady's grossly inflated achievements in terms of SB wins and SB appearances. Brady really should have 5 losses in SBs because both the Falcons and the Seahawks (especially the Falcons) handed Brady 2 SB wins on a silver platter! Stabler, by contrast, was challenged by Noll's great Steelers teams and Shula's great Dolphins teams of the 1970's. Manning's Colts teams were not an all-time great team. And Peyton Manning's overall post-season record is exceedingly mediocre.
The SNAKE- in my mind, the greatest clutch QB in nfl history !!!!!!!!!!!!! + I have watched a lot of NFL FILMS AND AS BEAR BRYANT WHO APPARENTLY GAVE KENNY THE NAME SNAKE SAID, " HE'S AS SLIPPERY AS A SLIPPERY SNAKE !!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK U MR. BEAR BRYANT !!!!!!!!!!!
I'm almost 65 years young, watching the NFL all along, Brady, Manning may have been better in some and many ways, but Stabler was such a cool, clutch performer, stand back there relaxed, flat footed, disecting defences when they were allowed to really kick your butts, smash you like a bug, and he just calmly threw darts to his receivers, Brady and Manning don't have the balls Stabler had! God bless you Kenny and your Family/Friends, you will always be #1 in my eyes and I was lucky enough to see him play in many different stadiums, much more awesome than the TV, True Roughhouse Poetry In Motion!!
Brady doesn't call his own plays. In a clutch win or lose situation, he would be staring at the bench waiting for the play to come into his helmet over the radio. Kenny would know what to call, call it, run it, score and get off the field.
Grew up with George Blanda, Daryle "The Mad Bomber" Lamonica, Jim Plunket and Kenny "The Snake" Stabler. I was at the "Heidi Game"! All Great Quarterbacks, but Stabler was the King under the Pressure of Pressures. The Immaculate reception was a Joke Jack Tatum KO'd Pittsburgh Steelers "Frenchy Fuqua"! Kenny Stabler made things happen under the craziest of circumstances of circumstances! PERIOD!
3lite19 It's the league. True Raiders stuck by Al Davis, and Al Davis had all Raiders' backs. And the league HATED Davis. It's bullshit, but the truth. Same for Pluckett- why isn't he in the HOF? Two time super bowl champ. First Mexican American QB to win the Super Bowl, along with a Mexican American coach? C'mon.
+3lite19 The detractors will say look at his career TD/INT ratio despite having a 96-49-1 regular season record and a 7-5 record as a starting QB and a Super Bowl ring. It's not about a handful of famous plays. You had to be there in the 1970s to appreciate Stabler's amazing gift for consistently pulling games out in the clutch. Stabler would basically start out these games with one of his famous hangovers, throwing a few interceptions in the first half, and then sober up for his patented comebacks at the end. He had 23 game winning drives (3 in the playoffs), all coming between the years of 1973-77, when the Raiders went 50-11 regular season, and 7-4 in the playoffs. I've never seen so many clutch performances over such a short period of time. Montana, as great as he was for the 49ers, could never match Stabler's flair for the dramatic...
Ken Stabler would read the playbook by the light of the jukebox on Saturday night and then he'd go light up a defense on Sunday afternoon. There will never be another quarterback like the man they called Snake. Rest easy, Ken.
Manning and Brady wouldn't have been protected by the rule book back then like they are in today's NFL. They would've both been destroyed back in Stabler's day.
No slight on Lamonica, but Stabler spent a lot of the begining of his career on the bench. How many thrilling games would he have given us had he started in his first or second year?
Snake was not a great silver star QB, BUT was the BEST blue collar QB !!! He was so fun to watch and he delivered antics to the fans all the while pulling out a miracle win. Certainly should be in the top 10 for me. It's not always about SB wins but entertainment for me. The NFL peaked in the 70's !!
y arent they asking the other qbs or even the defenders he played against? ask bradshaw, griese, mean joe green, lambert and ham. or in his division. ask them if hes h.o.f. worthy!
R.I.P. Kenny. The guy was just cool. As for the guy in the video, "who would you rather have, Peyton Manning?" Fuck no, Manning is the complete opposite of clutch, he chokes. George Atkinson is always great on these top 10 lists, still has swagger.
I agree.... You put Manning or Brady without the Mel Blount rule and it would be a different story...not to mention a rare roughing the passer flag in the 70s. I would take Stabler anyday.
May he rest in peace, and, Lord give strength to his Family and Friends. He ought to be in the HOF...Maybe he'll make it now, like Ron Santo....When it's too late to enjoy it. He was CLUTCH...Like Reggie Jax...When the game was on the line, he was BIGTIME....Jax, I think was .269 lifetime. ..In October, he was Ruth, Mick, Willie,Aaron, Gehrig, Hornsby, Cobb rolled into one. Snake was Starr, Baugh, Unitas, Luckman, Y/A, with the ballgame in the Balance...He's a GREAT one. Enshrine Snake in Canton!
Ken Stabler was The Man. As for Brady and Manning etc. great as they are, I don't think they could have thrived in the era that the Snake played in. Stabler was a man of his time and I am so glad I grew up watching him play. Rest in Peace Ken Stabler, you will be remembered.
He should be in the HALL OF FAME. I think the voters used his final seasons with other teams as a strike against him and it's not fair. He loved the game and wanted to play more. The Saints and Oilers didn't have the playmakers as his Raiders teams did and it's not his fault. The voters need to stop making excuses because Jerry Rice played for other teams and it didn't keep him out. The fact that he's not in the HOF is ludacris.
Im a Eagle and Bronco fan, but as soon as I heard the news it was sad I mightve never known who he was but He is a great person tough luck for raider fans GoRaidsGo
oh god I didn't know he died may he enjoy his second life as much as he did his first the best Raiders QB ever funny fact drafted at the same spot as our current QB and the legend Favre
Peyton Manning was a great QB - one of the greatest but he wasn't clutch in big games. Maybe the year they won the super bowl in the AFC title game but that was it. Ken Stabler doesn't have the stats partially because the era but he was clutch. He also was the coolest QB gotta give him points for that as well.
Im 73 and all these primadonnas out there today couldn't hold his jock. The 76 Raiders were just awesome. and lead by THE SNAKE? You cant make this up...
The snake played against very strong teams very tough 💪 every foe he faced was division or champ level dam Miami Pittsburgh colts San Diego etc etc just to get there very tough opponents
I loved the Raiders and Stabler growing up. Having had the laughing stock Giants of the 1970s as my home team, I chose the Raiders as as my winning team to follow based on the Snake's exploits. But, I always felt his long road to the HOF was caused by Jim Plunkett's taking a Raiders team that was 9-7 the prior two years under Stabler to a SB victory his first year (and then doing it again 3 years later) tainted Stabler's legacy a bit.
Line up all of those great QBs of the 70s and have a good look. Were there any as cool as Ken Stabler? Different era, different game and very different statistical emphasis; but by any barometer, The Snake is an All-Timer!
rest in peace Snake. you will be missed. Raider Nation will be thinking about you every day.

I'm a Broncos fan, but Stabler was a baller. It's lame that he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame. Would've liked to hear his speech
As a Patriots fan, he should have got in the hall of fame long ago. R.I.P Ken the Snake Stabler!
My favorite Raider of all time!
Brady doesn't call his own plays. In a clutch win or lose situation, he would be staring at the bench waiting for the play to come into his helmet over the radio. Kenny would know what to call, call it, run it, score and get off the field.
rockerbie Brady didn’t throw as many interceptions, drink the night before a game- play hungover and lose in the afccg and only appear in 1 super bowl
PERIOD!
The games Snake played with Casper, Biletnokoff, and Branch were amazing. It's bullshit he's not in the HOF along with Plunkett and Coach Flores.
And remind me why he isn't in the Hall of Fame...
Stabler had a career 0.87 TD/INT ratio (194 TD/222 INT).
However, I can make a case for him since he's a lefty and there's only one QB that is enshrined in the Hall of Fame and that's Steve Young.
because the NFL hates badasses and Ken Stabler was a badass QB
The NFL hates the Raiders
Julian Agregan Unless Charles Woodson has a say on that.
You could throw a football through a keyhole. You are my ALL TIME GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME.
If there was a better wide receiver than Cliff Branch, I've never seen him.
The most quintessential Raider player of all-time. Snake, Raider Nation loves you forever.
He was the best..lot of good ones ..but he was the best..thanks for the memories.you were the man !!!
ill take kenny over some of the supposedly "elite" qbs of todays game any day
Ken Stabler would read the playbook by the light of the jukebox on Saturday night and then he'd go light up a defense on Sunday afternoon. There will never be another quarterback like the man they called Snake. Rest easy, Ken.
ABSOLUTE TRUTH !!!
From the Steelers R.I.P. Ken great to have you as our rival in the 70's.
My favorite Raider of all time.
I have so much respect for him i think of stabler like the old tebow R .I . P stabler #raidernation
Manning and Brady wouldn't have been protected by the rule book back then like they are in today's NFL. They would've both been destroyed back in Stabler's day.
kirbymario44 every qb not named Brady has been hurt in the same time period he played
He's good enough that everybody knows his name.
I salute you.
As a kid Ken Stabler taught me how to be rough, tough, and smooth - and most of all how to be a winner. RIP Kenny!
No slight on Lamonica, but Stabler spent a lot of the begining of his career on the bench. How many thrilling games would he have given us had he started in his first or second year?
Should have been in the HOF many years earlier.
Paul Zimmerman was the reason he never got in in his lifetime. so sad he never got to see himself in
Snake was not a great silver star QB, BUT was the BEST blue collar QB !!! He was so fun to watch and he delivered antics to the fans all the while pulling out a miracle win. Certainly should be in the top 10 for me. It's not always about SB wins but entertainment for me. The NFL peaked in the 70's !!
y arent they asking the other qbs or even the defenders he played against? ask bradshaw, griese, mean joe green, lambert and ham. or in his division. ask them if hes h.o.f. worthy!
It's not the 2 or 3 plays it's more like the 25 plays he made to help win games.
It's been 4 years since his passing. He won't be forgotten by Raider nation nor any true football fan.
RIP to a Raider legend :(
May he rest in peace, and, Lord give strength to his Family and Friends.
He played in a much tougher era and had to go up against the 70’s Steelers. The Snake 🐍 was awesome. 🏈
One Of The Best Ever, Ken Stabler-The Gambler!
Kenny beat us every game even the playoffs. Not only Mr clutch but drove on moxie when he was sick.Sadly missed coming from a die hard Bengal
The all time great need I say more!!! rest in peace snake.i know you and madden are up there going over the game!!!!
My boi kenny never got too see him play but he's my legend true
Put the man in the Hall!!! Rip Snake!
SNAKE IN THE HALL FINALLY
The snake snaked his way up on the list for a reason. he was a beast!
Im a Eagle and Bronco fan, but as soon as I heard the news it was sad I mightve never known who he was but He is a great person tough luck for raider fans GoRaidsGo
Minecraft Lover Eagles, Broncos, and a Minecraft fan? WTF
oh god I didn't know he died may he enjoy his second life as much as he did his first the best Raiders QB ever funny fact drafted at the same spot as our current QB and the legend Favre
He will always be one of Bama's greatest!
At around the 38 second mark he throws a pass against a Bears Defensive Back- Virgil Livers. Livers is a principle in my home town.
One of the Mannings was clutch, and it wasntt Peyton! LOL
Ken The Snake Stabler is all you need to know about him. He was the definition of cool under pressure.
great video
That touchdown against the New England Patriots says it all.
R.I.P The snake Ken Stabler.
I'll take Snake over anybody else anyday.
r.i.p legend
Im 73 and all these primadonnas out there today couldn't hold his jock. The 76 Raiders were just awesome. and lead by THE SNAKE? You cant make this up...
R.I.P. the snake
RIP
From a niners fan
After Villapiano’s quote at 3:21 they should have cut to to the cheerleaders.
What's the song called that plays after vilipiano says he's one of the boys?
Sounds like a variation of the "Autumn Wind" Raider song from NFL Films. Just a guess.
Simply the best
What’s the name of the song that plays at the start?
RIP to the Snake, Finally a Hall of Famer!! 🏆
My favorite player.
roll tide forever man
R.I.P. Ken Stabler
