But what would they say if if they talk about the future?
'You will marry him in the year of N/A and N/A'?

This is something I try to impress on my students when we discuss Roman history--that cultural quirks, as you put it, matter. Whether it sticks or not, I don't know. Another great video! Looking forward to the next one.

One of the advantage of there system is that you give people immediate context on the event you are referring to. So people don't have to remember what this year was like, they immediately know it.

I was born during the 3rd year of the Blair Ministry, 3 days after Corpus Christi.

This is almost identical to how people in Serbia counted time according to holidays.
i.e. ''I was born five days after St. George`s day''

Was this system also used by the pesants? And how (if at all) did the system change with the rise of the empire? Did the people just start saying "I was born in the first year of Julius Caesar"?

+Maria Clara Machry Jacintho the peasants probably used like 12 years after Octavius became emperor.

+Maria Clara Machry Jacintho romans still elected consuls for the most duration of the Empire. They just did't have any actuall power, they were something between Rome's mayor and a honorary title.

+Maria Clara Machry Jacintho In theory, it could've been used all the way up until the fall of the Empire, as there were still consuls, they just had no power.

+Nhat Tran 1985. The election was in 1980, but Reagan's inauguration was in 1981. That's just like this year; 2016 is divisible by 4, so it is a presidential election year, but the next president will be sworn in during January 2017.

"Political ideology influenced timekeeping." Like it doesn't today? When you use "B.C.E.", that is very much a politically influenced formulation.
