What a wonderful life I've had as a Canadian musician. Ian Thomas, Gino vannelli, Garelu, Robert Charliebois, and so many others. I have truly been blessed to a known these times and people
So I’m just sort of rediscovering the greatness of Ian Thomas. I was too young to really appreciate his music back then. I would have first seen him on SCTV and thought, cool, he’s Dave Thomas’ brother. I was obsessed with Bob and Doug Mackenzie when I was a kid. I mean, Strange Brew was a good movie when you are a teenager. Now I’m obsessed with Ian’s songs.
I recall hearing this song a few times on a Canadian radio station, that I could get in pretty easy when I lived in Michigan. This has a very Steely Dan kind of feel to it, which I really like.
I never realized this song was from the 70’s. It’s totally in my 80’s heart catalog. One of my favorite songs ... so uplifting and subtle in its lyric ... gorgeous
I remember flying over Nevada with this song in my mind. "On the salt flats of Nevada". ( i saw him at a small bar in Winnipeg in the 80's, then he signed his hits album for me. - Nicest guy!) Thanks for this.
This is a such a great song, I wish the younger generation of children of today would like this kind of music instead of all that awful rap and garbage that fills the mind with horrible thoughts. I'm glad I love this kind of music. REAL MUSIC.
*_alienboya_* I'm younger generation. I enjoy listening to this kind of quality music. Many have also told me that I'm the equivalent of a man over 50, stuck inside a 25 year old body.
My husband and I saw him last Saturday night at the Regent Theatre in Oshawa. What a great talent and a wicked sense of humour like his brother Dave. I always thought he was underrated as a Canadian artist. I loved his "Looking back" cassette tape (yes, cassette tape!!) from 1993/94. I would play it over and over again, singing along with himHe had a "hell of a year" (2017) when his 44 year old son became a paraplegic after a ski mobile accident.. Such a humble soul who has shown such gratitude to people and his showbiz friends for coming together to perform charity concerts to raise funds for his son- a husband and a father of four. I am so glad I had the chance to see him in concert. He is definitely a Canadian gem! Thank you so much, Ian for sharing your talents with us!
Got to see him a few years back as a member of Lunch At Allen's it was a great show and was able to meet him after the show where he signed my Long Long Way LP he is a real nice guy.
Great song. I saw Ian Thomas live on many occasions...too many to remember. But at one gig at the Rondon Tavern(Rundown?) near Roncesvalles in Toronto, his guitarist had the holy grail of killer guitar tones via a Mesa Boogie amp. My mission in life is to track down that amp so I too can have that sound.
Awesome song...love everything about it...the lyrics, the vocals, the music itself. Intense subject matter though. wonder how far off we are from it....
Oh boy, Jarvis hotel mid '70's? with the cultural time change in Canada...mid '60's Thankfully if you could see over the edge of the bar, you we're served. Ian Thomas outstanding. This may be the first recorded human incident of 'vocal fry' Thank you
The 70's...oooohh WOW!!!! I was so in love...as a kid...in the summer time ..no matter which one...I never found her...maybe she was right there in front of me....all along...now she is gone...that paradise is lost forever...life is indeed short.
Did you notice that they didn't actually take off, during the song? As it ends, they are still sitting and waiting, terrified of all the people outside who are trying to get onto the ship.
Not a hit. but a good song, Painted Ladies is right up with the best of all time though.Ian Thomas could have fit right in with the band called 'America'

Why is Ian Thomas not in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame ???
Maybe we just need to jog their memory.

I know right.
I am really happy, that my teen mancub loves Ian Thomas as much as I do...I did my job well - that is all
LOVE Ian 'Thomas. To quote Bob and Doug, 'Beauty, eh?'
I saw Guess Who last week and I understand his flutist plays with them now.
Awesome song...love everything about it...the lyrics, the vocals, the music itself. Intense subject matter though. wonder how far off we are from it....
You are right about the subject matter, thought we got past the cold war. Apparently, certain powers that be can't get past it...
Drums sound soooooo good!
Wow! Amazing classic.
Another suggestion for me to watch from the almighty algorithm. Next is The Red Green Show ep 66. Guess who's in it. Love him either way.
Oh boy, Jarvis hotel mid '70's?

Stone cold classic.
Does anyone realize he was on the Red Green show> lol. He was the original meals on 4 wheels, drove the monster truck, with a quad, haha.
Yep, I remember him on Red Green. He AND his brother Dave were on The New Red Green Show a few years later when it moved to CBC.
Gotta love the people of useless trivia like us, haha. Share the knowledge.
Sometimes useless trivia makes life a little more interesting
A GREAT tune. still a favorite, and one heck of a summer tune for me. awesome bass riffs..

What a sad comparison that is on any level. Ian Thomas Band deserved way better.
