Really interesting, I’m always amazed at how compact triumph cranks are! I have a 78 Tiger 750, to my knowledge the bottom end has never been apart, she’s done about 30000miles and for about 10000 of those she’s been running and external cartridge filter and using 20/50 Morris Vtwin oil. I’ve rebuilt the top end but I must admit I often wonder about the condition of the sludge trap, I suppose I should tear the engine down but she runs beautifully and there’s not a sniff of play in the mains or the big ends and I generally work by the mantra ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’!!!! Would be great to know though but I suppose it’s impossible to know until you take a look????
Hi . Can you tell me the standard dia of the oil seal end on my 1969 T120. Mine is 0.624. When I tried fitting the seal over the crankshaft, it fits, but it feels like it is too loose. Thanks. Really enjoying all your videos man.
Hope this isn't a dumb question.....do modern oils eliminate the need for the sludge "trap"? Is that why the engineers incorporated it originally? The oil was pretty crappy back in the 30's I'd assume! lol
As long as the sludge trap and the engine is clean modern oils are the way to go for bikes in regular use. I tour on my 66 T90 (3000+ Miles per trip) and use multi grade 10/40, the last time I checked the crank at 40,000 miles it was spotless and nothing needed replacing.
Yes do the mini bike vid,,I ride one with my 4yr granddaughter,I hoped up a predator 212 ,billet rod n flywheel ,big cam , stainless steel valves ,26 lb valve springs,,she has a brand new CRF 50,my son owns a67;t120 ,I own a Harley n bin back yard mechanic since I was 10 ,n took small engine repail n vocational school😊❤
If I ever rebuild my 1964 TR6, which currently runs and rides beautifully, should I be sending the crank out to get it balanced? Or is it not needed with every rebuild? I think I mentioned this before, but those Franz and Grubb gaskets you recommended worked great. The OIF T140 I picked up recently was leaking pretty bad around the base gasket and pushrod tube seals. (When I took it apart I realized it didn't have any pushrod tube seals. Nothing but some silicone around the inside of the front tube. When I saw that I was surprised it was leaking worse) Anyway, the bike has been dry as bone since I replaced the top end gaskets and push rod tube seals. (It was my first time taking a top end apart.) I've been going to the garage with my little UV flashlight (which makes oil glow green) and shining it all around the engine just to admire how clean it is.
So enjoyable to watch, one day my triumph will come, just in planning at the moment. Thanks!

Quality work. I have a norton barrel that needs boring but im not sure if it will be in spec after.
I have 64,000 miles on my 1973 Tiger.
I have never messed with the bottom end of the engine.
It runs good.

so modern old dont break down as poorly as these original oils did so with good oil and care you dont see this level of sludge!

I also re-cut the threads, in your experience do the thread forms change in 1967 ? (Cycle to UNF).

I made that mistake not cleaning the trap. You risk no oil to the baring, trust me it sucks
