I own a 2009 Giant Trance X with 3x9 Shimano XT drive train. I haven't ridden In 10 years ( I had 3 kids, now they're older and I have more time for me again and my son wants to RIDE 😊 ), I use to race XXC. I went to ride the other day and the rear derailleur was broke, went to buy one and NOPE they don't make them anymore and I could only find used parts. I was shocked how much everything has changed in 10 yrs. Thank you for making this video.. ordered all the parts from your lists, it helped a TON! 👍👍

Over the past few days I have watched a lot of videos regarding setups and adjustments. This is by far the best one which I have come across. Video, sound quality and lighting were perfect. All instruction was clear and concise. Bravo…
I recently upgraded from the m4100 to the m6100, and your video was incredibly helpful! Thanks to your informative content, I was able to install my m6100 smoothly without any issues. Sending much love from the Philippines!
That’s the best installation video of the 12 speed I’ve seen! VERY informative! I’ve just gone from Box Prime 9 to Shimano Deore 12 and I can’t tell you how easy that was to follow and dial in! I was worried it would be difficult because the Box was awful! How wrong I was. I’ve learnt my lesson now, Box can do one! Oh how I’ve missed Shimano! Great video! Thank you!
You have probably made what for me has been a pain for so many years and I have avoided doing. Derailleur adjustments. Thank you for the how to, you are the man!!!!
Thanks for the lesson! After watching the video 3-4 times, I was able to mount and set up a 12 speed Shimano SLX/XT system on my bike .I also found out that the 12s chain is very narrow and it doesn't fit a shimano crank for 11s if you don't change the chainring with one for 12s. The installation became perfect!
I’m putting together a new hard tail and I think this is quite possibly the greatest video ever. It makes putting 12 speed together a breeze. Thank you for doing all of these great videos.
WOW - I'm going to install almost similar drtivetrain on SLX Derailleur, Deore shifter and same cassette. Your video is an ultimate and perfect in-time guide for me! Especially thanks for perfect B-gap explanation and very high quality filming! I saw a lot of training videos and yours are one of the best - you have a talent to teach people.
I switched over to Shimano 12 speed last summer. I have always liked shimano and now the bikes that live at my house are all compatible which makes the spare parts inventory simpler. Great video and thanks.
Just spent like an hour and a half trying to dial in my new 12 speed drivetrain and I stopped because I couldn't figure it out, thanks, I never would've figured I needed to shorten the chain, eventhough I wanted to since it hangs super low when it's on the harder gear. Thanks again, this really helps.
This was helpful. I just installed a M8100 1x drivetrain on my Tallboy V4. Shifter indexing is always tricky for me, but after some back and forth I got it to work (at least on the stand). A video on troubleshooting indexing issues would be really useful. In my case I re-did all my steps from cable attachment, to the limit and B-gap screws and then re-did the indexing process two times. I eventually got it working correctly. Hopefully once I get the bike out on the trails it shifts as good as in the repair stand. The other thing I think some people are not aware of is that the end caps, aka ferrules, need to be put on correctly and very firmly. There will be some natural housing compression that occurs after use, so indexing might need to be fine tuned after a ride or two. Another tip, for full suspension, cut the chain with 7 extra links to start. Then see if you need to reduce it more. Once you cut, you can't go back and lengthen. In my case, the 7 links was too long and ended up cutting again to get to 5 links which was perfect.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm doing my first bike build and your video answered Every drive train issue I've encountered. Clear, concise and easy to see your video is right on the money!😁
I have never shortened my chain just bought it for 11 speed install and done Shimano also have optislick cables they are so good no rust and no to bad sliding in the house
Well duh! I've been trying to get the B Screw just right on my recently acquired 12sp for over a week. I had no idea that 51T reference line was on the back side. Lined it up and shifting is now finally 100% perfection! Thanks!
I knew the theory but ended up faffing about with my gears for what seemed like ages. I got fed up, I then used this method & 5 minutes later was all sorted. Thanks.

Woohoo! I've just finished doing a break in of my newly upgraded hardtail. This was the video that helped me through the whole process of upgrading the drivetrain. Thanks a lot! Just needed to buy the necessary tools. It's a different kind of feeling riding an old steed with new components. It's just so satisfying to ride after overhauling your own bike for the first time. Except for the wounds acquired during the upgrade. Hahaha!

I don’t know if they unhooked the cable from deraileur on purpose, but your camera angles answered all my questions and I think with the adjustments you directed me to make, will shift much better than for the last owner!

For anyone following this tutorial: Check that you have the correct type of derailleur hanger. There are two different standards and only one works. Specifically you need a standard mount hanger, NOT a direct mount hanger. Direct mount hangers are an older Shimano standard and not every bike mechanic knows about it. However in case yours is direct mount, you can usually just buy a correct hanger, even for bikes that are a few years old.

Very well explained. I ve also noticed a delay in downshift from larger cogs. Also i have a Xcm X12 chain and is not very friendly with the hyperglide function. It does fine with climbing but it spring over many tooths when downshifting from larger cogs. I believe the X shapes of the chain cause that. I would recomend others to stick with the Shimano chain if they fully wanna benefit from Hyperglide. Other then that, great video, keep doing the good job!
Got all my parts and about to do the install. In my case, I have to also replace the RaceFace chainring. That looks pretty easy from other videos I've seen. I just re-watched your video for the 3rd time and took notes. The only thing that concerns me is chain sizing. I'm super nervous about that since I screwed it up on another bike and it cost me the price of the chain since I cut it too short and the chain was unusable so had to buy another one. From what I understand there is only ONE chain size that is ideal. If you get it wrong, you are either one link short or one link long.
As usual your videos are very clear and to the point, so I enjoyed watching it even after already installing a few of these drivetrains over the past year. What I did just learn is that Shimano makes a specific inner cable grease- seriously?! I'd love to hear why this needs a specific grease. I was a bit surprised you didn't go for the XT shifter - not a fan of the double downshift?
For 6 years I used the same fast chain link for 3 times on 3 different new chains, and I'm alive. Shimano's recommendation is often for safety reasons or perhaps to sell more? I leave that question in you. I don't have the answer, but it seems that he holds that link quite a bit for many chains. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm doing wrong to use the same link over and over again. I don't know.
You can get away with that a few times for sure. And it all depends on how hard are you on your gear, how much power you put out etc. Shimano os just playing it safe
The chain is 2 chainlinks too longitud. Try it 2 chainlinks shorter and you will see that it shifts much more precise and also downshifts much faster and more precise. I have 4 bikes with this drivetrain. On one bike the chain was longer than on my other bikes and i was never happy with the shifting. After shorten the chain 2 links and readjusting the chaintention it works finaly flawless. Kind regards.
Great tips! I have to notice however that your chain is 1 link too long, as it almost touches onto itself when you're in the highest gear/smallest cog. Other than that, everything is top class.
Thumbs up for the video. Really well done! I have one question: he says in the video "on the derailleur screw you can use loctite grease or anti-seize" and then he uses a threadlocker glue. Does'nt that defeat the purpose? You don't want it to lock up too much because you wanna be able to get the derailleur off if you have to change it or align the derailleur hanger. I have never seen anyone do that :O
Hello again! I've found that shifting to the lower gears becomes faster if you use parktool's method for setting the b-gap (i.e. with a 4mm hex key between the tooth and the pulley wheel). The tip on chain rubbing is really helpful!
@@LoveMTB Ooh, the teeth of the 51T cog ended up going below the line instead of just above it. Regardless, thanks for the video, it was really helpful!

@@LoveMTB oh noted! I thought it was a hard and pass rule similar to Sram with their b gap tool. Thanks!!
I will upgrade my drivetrain 1x12 on my giant trance 2016 this video is a big help to me 🚴✌️
YOU ARE AMAZING
This is my project this weekend. Thanks for this video! Wish me luck!
@@LoveMTB well said. Cheers :)
@@LoveMTB I did it! Took my time. Watched your video 20 times. Had a few beers. It works. Waiting on tires and grips now and then complete. Thanks for your video help! Cheers!
This is a really good video! I know how to do all this by myself but this tutorial is really well explained and quite engaging!
I love your channel it's so helpful! I just put a new XTR Derailleur on my 1 X 12 Hyperglyde with all new Cable housing/cable :).
Hi there! I couldn't find it anywhere. Then I came across with your video. Please reply me if you know. I have a hardtail with full xt m8000 groupset on it. Can I swap them with the new xt m8100? I am not sure if the casette or the derailleur fit on my existing bike.
Could work but not with the original 12 s cassette. You have plenty of vids on my channel talking about upgrades, here's one - th-cam.com/video/COACxEtQUR8/w-d-xo.html
@@LoveMTB Thanks 😊
Again, another fantastic tutorial! Thanks a lot!!
Will be doing upgrade to 12s slx soon. Happy to found this video.
Thank you so much for this video it helped me alot more power to your channel!
Amazing video seriously… thank you so much for the time and effort put into this video.
@@kridstax2248 🙏 for your feedback, happy trails!
Thanks, your videos are always super on point and informative
Glad to help!
This is great, but how did you get your mini spline free hub onto wheel?
Thanks again
It's part of the hub so the hub manufacturer might have it. If not you have to use 3rd party cassettes
This was very entertaining and informative! Thanks!
Excellent video and install! Very clear very easy to understand the best I watched quite a few today this one had the most detail look no further. 1x11 install complete. Thank you 😊
This sounds like the best tutorial ever! Too bad I don't have money for anything xD
But if I was building a bike, I would def get Deore set.
Just perfect every time you make a video . Would have love to seen the bottom bracket installation as I've ordered the same one and the slx cranks finally to upgrade the srams sx ones . Did you need any spacers on the BB ? Is that a 52mm chain line ? Great video once again and a lovely bike . Cheers
Is it true that the xt shifter has faster switching time compared to the Delore one? BTW: Thanks for your great videos. You gave a lot of tricks which are not mentioned in the manuals.
Yes in a way, however there are a few more differences between the 2. Take a look at this video, it explains all features - th-cam.com/video/0PZsFft3eas/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the link!@@LoveMTB
Perfectly explained- great video and sound quality!
Ill be building a 2019 Norco Sight carbon 29er... your videos are aways great to watch. Thank you. Shimano drivetrain with Raceface cranks. ✌️
What do you think of adding a chain guide at the crank? Is it useful on top of having a clutch at the derailleur?
Sir, always who is the best? 1x9 / 3x9 please tell me.
What is the of this drivetrain
That was so much better to watch, listen and adjust. Thanks 😊
