Even tho both bands are simelar, I think Coldplay uses a softer style, which distinguishes them from Radiohead, and makes them still an enjoyable band.

    Awesome deep dives man. Damn, this is one of those long comments - my bad, it'd bad form but I appreciate your vids, so it gets me to thinking. As you get more used to their sound, maybe it'll be less a turn off, but the way Thom writes the songs he often ignores the typical verse/chorus etc. structures our ears are waiting for. But gradually or quickly sometimes, the song takes over after you hear it more and finally it just hits and it doesn't matter. "OK Computer" was still coming out of their more rock oriented sound (you might really like a bunch of songs on the album before it "The Bends" as well) so I expect you'll connect with more tracks there. I will say, 'From the Basement' is an incredible spectacle to immerse in - it isn't like an unplugged and stripped back like that, though it is stripped back from a fully produced studio album - just the 5 band members doing the songs live, no tricks, less production, though that is part of the amazing element of the show, their ability to recreate these soundscapes live with just the 5 of them (and Thom - like Tom, hard 'T' - absolutely shines, much higher in the mix for sure) - just seeing them create their music together in a small setting live and do it so perfectly - it sounds better than the album, it's kind of crazy. The combination of the sonics and watching how they perform it, it is epic. Anyone who has been in a band or played with other musicians or made beats with friends - anytime you collab to make music - you see them at work and it is like watching a dream come true, like to be part of what they do would be the ultimate. Their are tons of videos of Thom, or Thom and lead guitarist and 2nd mastermind Jonny Greenwood, playing acoustic sets with material from the entire band discography. A song called "There, There" - my favorite Radiohead song - is a great example - though I love the full band studio and live version as well, the stripped down acoustic version is one of the most beautiful songs in existence for me. th-cam.com/video/LqaTvSJV9J4/w-d-xo.html - as for a song to really connect like 'How to Disappear'...I've always thought of it as having cousins, along with 'Nude' and a couple others like "Street Spirit" off album 2 and 'Present Tense' off the most recent album, the 4th track on 'OK Computer' "Exit Music (For a Film)" is just such a song. It is the older brother to "How to Disappear"... but best to just roll into the record with the expectations you already have, and see what happens! It became my favorite album by the 2nd listen, and has never been topped 26 years later, and I listened to tons of music and genres before then and play and listen to tons today. Funny thing is, 'Kid A' threw me off so much, I fell away from the band for several years - you know what brought me back, accidentally catching "In Rainbows: From the Basement" and it blew my mind - I couldn't believe they were still making new and such great music and I returned and have been sucked into the Radiohead vortex ever since, went back, fell in love with 'Kid A', (and the other albums I missed), and after it finally sunk into my brain and then hit hard - especially wit the non traditional song structures that can frustrate at first, this is definitely a band where many many songs don't just take few listens, but just speaking for me, sometimes several years, to finally hit that magic vibration. Keep in mind that lead guitarist and 2nd man to Thom, Jonny Greenwood, is also a symphony orchestral composer, mainly for films, has been nominated twice now for Academy Awards for his work, and is one of the top sought after dudes in Hollywood for that (not a bad side gig for your lead guitarist to have when trying to make killer music), so they have a lot of layers (beyond just the layers of sounds, but layers of intent and sometimes deeply buried musicality going on. You just gained a new Sub and I'll look forward to your thoughts on "OK Computer." All peace//

      @JaKarTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wowww I started 'there, there' right now because of your comment and I said hold on let me react to it! so stay tuned for that fam! I appreciate you! I can tell that they have their own structure and greatness so I have to get used to that but you're right, as I hear it more & more it just keeps getting better! Thank you for the support Drew!

    • @dreww1609
      @dreww1609 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JaKarTV No doubt, rooting for you to get Subs and make it happen! This band has a lot of massive fans so they're a good way to get some juice pouring into your channel. Already takes guts and ambition to do what you're doing, its impressive. All the culture craziness going on - we in Gen X just kind of lay back in the cut. Starting school with a pager and leaving with the Web changing everything, was a wild time. Musically, to go from Middle School through college based around the 90s on either end was a true gift. The emergence and dominance of hip hop, Grunge sparking rock and a massive alt/rock scene (like Radiohead), not to mention Techno/Electronica/EDM whatever you want to call it, come into its own - the only down side is being open to new stuff. but its worth it, I try. As for 'There There' - there are 3 different versions that are all cool in their own way - that acoustic one is my favorite, but the studio/music video is awesome and then they've turned it into a wild live stadium concert opener, some great vids of those performances - all have diff vibes but the core song is so great - at least it's my personal favorite, it makes me happy to have the variations. All luck and success my G. Respect!

    Nude, All I need, and Videotape, are my favorites from this album. Lyrically, All I Need is one of my favorite Radiohead songs. The lyrics are so beautifully devastating (I am a moth that just wants to share your light). Videotape is kind of a hidden gem. I think the reason that the song feels like it was cut short is because sometimes lives are cut short, and he's filming a videotape for the ones he loves if, for some reason, his life is cut short. There is a sound almost like a clock ticking, and the ending could be interpreted as inner peace, knowing that people will know how much he cared if he does leave the earth before them. Thom is a genius when it comes to writing about loneliness, despair, and insecurities. Vocally, Nude is one of my favorites. Weird Fishes is a song that will grow on you. I love that you take the time to really understand the lyrics to each song. Sometimes the best lyrics fly right over the listeners head. It's not easy to really take in a song on the first listen, and dissect it. With Radiohead, the lyrics are just as important as the soundscapes.

      @JaKarTV  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks JaKar for this great album reaction! I love In Rainbows and it seems like they actually reached a point that they became absolutely comfortable with being open and fluid with their talents. They are all accomplished musicians and Jonny Greenwood is an actual real composer! LOL. They are amazing. Thom Yorke is close to my age so in 2007 he would have been older and feeling more comfortable with sharing what is closest to his heart than he would have at a younger age. They are so amazing and I love Colin on the bass, I think he is perhaps the best bass player out there. The drummer Philip Selway and Ed O'Brien are just ridiculously talented. I'm looking forward to more of your reactions!! Peace and love!

    i think that in regard to jigsaw falling into place the build-up is necessary to the feel of the song and changing its structure would defeat the purpose in a way.
    for me (and most listeners as far as i know) its set in relation to the short bittersweet relationships you form in, lets say, a club setting, and the intricacies that come with them.
    you can feel the apathy and fatigue in thom's voice in the first verse, as he falls into another such scenario, trying to make something of the night. in the next, his tone (and the corresponding lyrics) shift into a frustration that becomes desperation, culminating in a desire to "let it out" so they can feel something real, eventually fading out with the pair being absorbed into the atmosphere of song and dance (i take his tone in the last couple of lines to either signify he's given up on anything meaningful and forget his ambitions, instead choosing to enjoy the moment, or simply just getting swept away).
    the last verse for me is acceptance and retirement. the pieces fall together as he (or they) recognise their time together is over and there really was nothing more to this interaction in the end. they look back over and over again wondering if it could have been more, but in the end push those thoughts aside, leaving whatever potential may have existed behind them - that light they can feel on their backs. the way i see it, they aren't heading towards a better future through this experience, they are only abandoning the possibility of hurt and longing with their departure, readying themselves to do it all again another night with another one.
    the instrumentation reflects this for me perfectly as well, and i see the instrumental bridges functioning as demonstrations of time passing. the intro picks up as the outing starts, and half-hearted vocals accompany the build-up in the same way thom prepares himself for another night. the next bridge sees a pickup in the beat as thom and his partner spend more time together and start to get into the rhythm of things, preparing us for the culmination of his aforementioned frustration. the instrumentation in the last bridge is the most active and desperate as the entire night comes together and the whole experience begins to blend, the party-goers fully absorbed in the night. this is the last dance, their final moments, and the last time they may ever see each other again, and perfectly leads into the song's send-off verse. of course, following said verse the outro is short and sweet since there's just nothing more to add.
    that's what i love about this song - it tells its story perfectly and makes you feel exactly what they want you to, using everything they have at their disposal as musicians.
    honestly, i'm not sure if this will enhance your enjoyment of the song at all, but i think its a good example of how radiohead create their music and could be a good point of reference. then again, it's probably my favourite song of theirs and i kind od just wanted to gush about it for a bit. great reaction man 🔥

    Great video, enjoyed your takes! Identifying Nude as one of the better tracks is pretty spot on, you are sleepin hard on Reckoner and Weird Fishes though! As far as the lyrics being somewhat unintelligible in places, I think thats intentional. I think they view Thom's vocals as an instrument first and foremost, rather than the focus of the song. Its great when you grow to love a song, then when you realize what the lyrics are actually saying and that they are great is just an Easter egg to discover.
    Have you heard Animal Collective? Judging from what you say in your videos I think you would really like them, I view them as similar to radiohead in many ways but with a more positive outlook. I would start with Merriweather Post Pavilion.

    Think of In Rainbows like this:
    A videotape of someone's last message to a loved one. Videotape (the song) basically exists to explain this, hence the lyrics "When I'm at the pearly gates, this'll be on my videotape." Pearly gates meaning gateway to heaven. Death.
    The other songs on the album are all about muddy, raw, pure, complicated love. You hear it in the music when rough-sounding drums & other instrumentals mix with the guitars & Thom's angelic voice. You hear it in the lyrics, which are sang beautifully while the lyrics themselves are generally dark.
    Videotape is the song that hits the nail on this transcendent coffin. The person who sent this message is probably dead. That's why it's so depressing sound and why there is very little optimism in that song compared to the rest.
    Hoping that thinking about the songs on this album like this will make them more listenable with this in mind. Also know that I did not come to this conclusion myself, I basically copied this from what I remember from another comment I found lol

People were getting the album for free and some would pay upwards of thousands of dollars for it. Honest people were paying like 16 bucks for it to match CD prices. This was a huge cultural point.

    I have this on vinyl and kinda tapped into Radiohead lore, but I swear I remember that it was in the liner notes that the lyrics on this album were kind of an after thought, so your disappointment in the vocals is inline with what the band were doing during that period. Johnny Greenwood(lead guitarist) was doing a lot of solo instrumental stuff, about to go into movie scores, Apreggi I think was adapted from an orchestral piece he wrote, and Thom was getting into electronic music at that point...if I remember correctly. Don't kill me if I got the timelines are a bit wrong, this was off the dome, to the "well actually" people

    Nice thoughtful reaction. Been a huge Radiohead fan since High School(Kid A era), not just because of the music, but exactly for the "spiritual warfare" reason you mention. There are lots of ideas at play in the lyrics, but plenty of Biblical/Christian references too; Thom's def perceptive, and tuned into those truths.

    You skipped the most beautiful middle part in Reckoner, shame, how anyone can edit that out and not be completely blown away by this gem? I know, we all get so passionate about our favourite songs, don't we. If you love Coldplay so much, you are going to love "Let Down" on OK Computer and yep, it's one of the few songs I hate by Radiohead and yep, because it reminds me of Coldplay, lol
    I love your reactions though, going through Radiohead's catalog is quite journey, hope you keep enjoying it.
    "In the Basement" session of this album is indeed great, but I still love the studio recording more, because of some instruments missing in the live session, like in Reckoner I really miss the strings, they add a lot to the song.

    I think what you may come to learn from listening to Radiohead which perhaps doesn't come into your thinking in this video is the power of restraint. Songwriting at this level is sometimes about what you choose to exclude. That space, that sense of longing, and emptiness that is often there on In Rainbows is what sets it apart from an album with songs that always build to something, always reach that climax you're looking for. Because the truth is that life rarely get's there, and the understanding of that and it's reflection within these songs is what makes this album so special. You're not meant to feel complete at the end.

    Videotape is technically a "suicide note" and you mentioned you wanted a more climatic ending (there is a version of that that I'll link below), but in my opinion it makes sense to end it this calm giving that it's a very depressing song.
    You also said that he ended the song on a positive note, and you can view it like that I won't judge, but "No matter what happens now / You shouldn't be afraid / Because I know today has been / The most perfect day / I've ever seen" means that this is his final day. It is the most perfect day, as in a closer for his life because he is planning to kill himself. Just thought I should put it out there.

    RE: the vox being low in the mix in Reckoner- true, it is something that takes getting used to, but once you do you'll begin to listen music on a deeper level. the strategy here is not so much about highlighting all the players as it is about the whole sound of the instruments, including vocals, acting together as an organism or environment and each sound is playing its part in the environment. listening to Radiohead is like exploring the world we live in underwater. keep peelin the onion man. this is soul music.
    and I have a feeling that after listening to more Radiohead you'll gradually lose interest in most of what Coldplay has to offer,, it sounds good but its easy listening man,, not too many layers to that onion,,
