This might be THE most helpful violin lesson video on all of YT. You explain everything immediately and clearly without taking excess amounts of time to promote yourself. This is almost 100% incredibly helpful insight. Much appreciated, sir!
It is why I was attracted to science to begin with, however as you go higher in academia and research you'll find people who are more dogmatic and less intellectual.
As a Suzuki teacher I appreciate the overview of the problems and the mention of "spatial awareness". I think body awareness is an underappreciated part of violin playing and teaching!
Hello Mr Goeffry. I am a 47 years old woman from Turkey and started violin at this age. Everyone around me thought it is very late for learning playing violin. But I really want it. It is very inspiring hearing about the 93 years old beginner :) I heard about my mistakes and learned how to correct them. Thank you and thank for your video. I will try and try. Looking for your other videos for the beginners :)
Best of luck on your violin lessons! It is never too late to learn anything, always remember that. I've just started learning to play the violin and one thing I've learned is that you just have to do what works for you :)
Just had my third (lockdown Zoom) violin lesson as a 65+ absolute beginner and this so helpful, thank you! Also you’re the kind of teacher who’d make learning violin a lot of fun!
You just made a comment that blew my mind, +FiddleJamInstitute: "Learning how to make it sound bad, is the fast track to sounding good." This can apply to nearly anything. I myself just bought a violin, and tuned it yesterday. I am a beginner. I've bookmarked your website to look into a possible membership to teach me how to play the Violin. The reason I remarked on your comment is because I also play videogames competitively, and your "technique" will be the cornerstone to my improvement in that. Thank you for your cross-discipline tip! Thanks so much!
Violin set up, rosin and strings also really matter in the sound a violinst produces, even for an absolute beginner. Some strings and gauges are more forgiving than others. It is impossible to scratch with Larsens! Lowering the action on the nut or the bridge a tiny littlebit lowers the strings just enough so the fingers do not have to press so hard. Also plain gut is easy to play. But the problems and solution you describe are spot on. If only I had known sooner.....
Thank you very much for your tips! I'm beginner and I started play violin last year (2016) and this year I am 16. Sometimes I feel hopeless because I can't play really good and I feel it's too late to learn violin for my age, and I learn myself (no teacher because of my family budget). After watching your video, you gave me the spirit to learn violin again! I do hope that you will upload the another video about violin! Thank you again! Blessed kind for you! 😄
Thanks! I'm honored to help with inspiration! You should check out my other videos on the Fiddle Jam Institute channel &/or come to www.FiddleJamInstitute.com and join us where you can signup for my newsletter, see a dozen full lessons for free and countless other sneak peaks of out every expanding library! 5 years ago? How is your progress now? I'm too started 16 years old, i can't work with teachers anymore (the last teacher around is bussy) , and that's why I learning violin by the videos))
Bridget O'Connor no. You just love to be happy that's all it is. 4 year olds are always happy but as we get older life beats it out. Good u still happy
I have been looking for answers as to why my violin is squeaking and you've helped me perfectly identify reasons that I've been unable to find anywhere else! Thank you so much!
My violin will be here in 10 days. I am 69 and will be taking lessons to learn to play. Thank you for your wonderful tips. I played for 2 years when I was in elementary school and have a,ways wanted to go back to it although I do not remember much. I look forward to your videos...thank you so much.
+Gabo Ruiz I appreciate that. I've been thinking about it for a while... Most of the music I love best comes with a violin, and I'd like to make an attempt to learn.
I appreciate your reverse engineering method. It is great manual. I would name it "How to torture others around me on purpose". My violin became a great revenge tool. Anyway, this video helped a lot with my violin learning. I self learn the violin and every book or video is full of "do this, must be parallel, play piano, move bow, hold like this, fingertips blah blah" without actually explainig the purpose.
thanks for this video I been doing this for a week and don’t see my self with out a violin ever and this video helps a lot and open the door for new sounds so thank you from my heart for taking the time to teach us the right ways to use the frog farts in stead of trying to stop them lol Jokes aside so far the best instructor !
FYI: I also have a nice adult beginner course available in the school store at www fiddlejaminstitute.com called “bucket list fiddle jam”! Check it out!👍
woah this actually means a lot, the way you explained every single detail made so much sense, i felt like i've already done every single 'frog fart' there is so WOAH REALLY thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU
I play banjo! We're watching because we so often accompany fiddlers/violinist, yes? I'm sure they'll LOVE having my practical advice between scratchy tunes :'D
Thank you so SOOOO much! I played a solo before all of this and likely missed the solo because I was too squeaky. It turns out this whole time, I actually had hold my bow WRONG ever since 4th grade! Now I know where I can improve! Thank you very much
Oh my!! As a beginner I make every one of those problems you demonstrated. My fingering is a nightmare as my fingers are short, yours are so long. Thank you for your video really appreciated. Kathy
So great to see these videos! Thanks for posting FiddleJamInstitute. I've been playing violin for 18 years, and I've been teaching since I was 13 years old. If anyone has any violin questions, feel free to ask me! I'm always happy to help :)
+Professor Bagel An old Strad copy from the late 1800's. Nothing too expensive. I just keep using it because I'm a bit lazy, I'm used to it, and it still sounds pretty good.
After trying for several years to play the violin I found Ajana Music Lessons and this appears to be the best home study system (google it if you are interested)
Thank you so much. I have never had a violin teacher break-down the causes of scratchiness... and I never thought to think about it too much. Instead, just practice and more practice 'til it sounded right. Looking forward to adding your analysis when I pick up a violin again after four months of absence.
I've never really had a lesson & I've been frustrated with many times I've sounded like a donkey that I've accidentally poked in the butt with the bow while sawing away, LOL! I've only been at it for a month & 1/2...being a decently accomplished guitarist & bassist; I found the approach to violin/fiddle to be backwards to bass/guitar...that...& my bow control is awful, I think. This video cleared up some of my questions. very cool.
Oh no.... my squeak problem is the worst squeak! Also a little of the planes issue. Awesome video. I love that you took the opportunities to explain how the "mistakes" could be techniques applied intentionally for some cool creative applications. Subscribed
genuinly really bloody helpful - from a beginner who couldnt stop the open E string from sqeualing. wasnt going fast or straight enough, thanks for the quick fixes!
Hi, not a parent or student here, however I do have a friend that is learning how to play violin and I own a classical guitar myself and am in practice. I am just watching to learn and expand my understanding of the violin and I respect the instrument and people who take the time to learn and play. I initially started listening to Mendelssohn violin Concerto E. Minor OP.64. It's a wonderful piece.
I'm a lefty, but I've never had an issue. In fact, being a lefty made it a lot easier for me. Everyone is different, and playing that way is your choice. If playing a 'right handed violin' is too hard, do not switch to a 'left handed' violin. Playing a left handed violin will not get you anywhere if you wish to play in an orchestra or take lessons with a professional. Playing a 'right handed instrument' is the better and most common way to play a stringed instrument. A guitar has both left and right handed versions and can easily be adjusted depening on what you are doing. A violin however, is NOT. I've been playing the violin for two years now, but an orchestra student for three. I've asked my teacher (a 72 year old man who's been playing the violin since he was 9) for an opinion on that and he told me that right handed is better. Lefty violins exist, but are probably not the best quality. You made a good choice and I hope you've had luck with learning. PS. I know this is like a year later, but I hope this was somewhat useful and made sense.
Thank you for these tips. You create a relaxing technique for learning as it can be overwhelming at times. You put a fun style for leaning into your teaching. Awesome instructor!
Wait a minute! THANK THE LORD IF FOUND THIS VIDEO! I’m an analytical thinker and I think I needed this explanation to make me realize what what’s going on so that I could correct it. “Light bow, heavy strings” wow that small piece of info just helped me break through a plateau! I’ve been playing for 10 years and could never get a pure sound!!! Wow, just wow!
This video was extremely helpful yo me. I am a 67 year old woman and started playing 2 years ago. I do have some arthritis in my left fingers. But that just means they are already bent the right way to play the strings!! I thought I would surprise my 89 year old dad and my winter recital and play Turkey in the Straw!! I want to sound my best and this video will really help. Thank you.
Man, Playing Violin is hard, there is just so many different ways to do it wrong. Your video allowed my to reflect on my own playing during my challenge of trying to learn the violin in 1 week. I literally typed into google: why does my violin sound scrachy. Thanks for your tips, I think you helped make it possible for me to get as far as I got this week. You can watch the video if you'd like and maybe also give tips/what you see that I do wrong and on what movies to watch next that allow me to further grow and make it sound better.
You make this really easy to understand. I wish I could have had some coaching like this when I took string methods class during my music education degree. I just couldn't move the bow fast enough to get a good sound. I probably could have gotten it with a little more work.
You should be able to get a hold of the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who was the guy who
Still really great after all these years, the best thing is he doesn't take himself too seriously like sooo many violin lessons on TH-cam, it's unbearable
Thank you Geoffrey! You have explained with visually showing several aspects of how not to how to properly bow, finger angle and pressure, etc in 15 mins, that took me several separate videos to watch, and still didn’t get it! I have seen bluegrass playing Orange Blossum Special that sideways bowing between end of fingerboard to the bridge sounds like a train chugging.
+FiddleJamInstitute I've been training like a madman to become a Professional Card Dealer so I only have small portions of my day for violin, piano, hand flute, etc...perhaps in about 3 months when I'm making the big bucks Dealing I'll check out your course. I'm already sold on your overall presentation and efficiency as an Instructor, seriously man... your appearance, accents and speech, show not tell explanations, over all structure and presentation, in depth knowledge, and personality are all pretty much flawless and geared to teach any age, sex or level of intelligence. Not just anyone can be a Teacher, especially not a good one! It takes very special and unique talents that only certain people have. Anyway, bravo! Keep on passing on all your talent/knowledge...you've been blessed with the power to do so.
I'm gonna get one soon! This week next week, not sure but I'm really excited! I have a bunch if videos on violin and I have a great understanding of the violin
I'm an absolute beginner on the violin, and this video was very informative. Thank you for sharing the proper bowing and fingering technique, I shall put this information to very good use. Thanks again. :-)
I received my acoustic/electric violin in the mail today, but I'm waiting til tomorrow to rosin my bow and begin practicing. Because I ordered a string mute to use since my practice space is rather small and I don't want to disturb others nearby with what may sound like a dying animal on the premises. (Hopefully that will not be a persistent issue though.) LOL! :-D
I do not know exactly what you mean on that one, but if you are hitting the bridge by accident, you are probably way too tight in your grip. All joints hold be loose and flexible, including the fingers and elbow.
Thank you, I'm just about to start learning, and figured I'd learn a little before I do, thank you for giving me a good idea how not to kill peoples ears around me XD
thanks so much! i knew i was doing something wrong but i didn't know what. you made it simple for me to understand so i can work to avoid these issues!
This might be THE most helpful violin lesson video on all of YT. You explain everything immediately and clearly without taking excess amounts of time to promote yourself. This is almost 100% incredibly helpful insight. Much appreciated, sir!
Thank you so much!
Great video! Wonderful!
I wish it was for viola
same technique for viola!@@ctdhyperbeast5167
This IS by far the easiest to understand how to "create" what you don't want so you know how to NOT create what you DON'T want.
My violin teacher always told me "not to do this" and "not to do that". But not WHY. Today I finally know WHY! Thank you!
Awesome. Thanks.
It is why I was attracted to science to begin with, however as you go higher in academia and research you'll find people who are more dogmatic and less intellectual.
To you sir, and to all the teachers that give free lessons and overall advice online....THANK YOU! You're awesome!
NO, thank YOU for being a part of it!
I agree! :D
You're a very nice looking man
As a Suzuki teacher I appreciate the overview of the problems and the mention of "spatial awareness". I think body awareness is an underappreciated part of violin playing and teaching!
Thanks!!
Studying english and violin at the same time. The man speak really great slow as I can understand.
Thank you very much by the way!
Me speak slowly? I usually get the opposite! Thanks!
my life now makes sense
+Riley Wageman that's AWESOME!

awesome!
You can learn at any age if you really want to
Best of luck on your violin lessons! It is never too late to learn anything, always remember that. I've just started learning to play the violin and one thing I've learned is that you just have to do what works for you :)
Im a beginer and i saw 1000s of videos to learn basic but you are the best online teacher. Thanks
Ha! I'm neither a student, teacher or parent! I don't even own a violin :P
Ricky I was looking in the comments for a comment like that! Same here!
me too :'(
same i want to have one ):
Violins can be had at next to no money. Sure they arent the best violins but they do work well for a beginner
I'm trying to translate these lessons onto Viola because I broke my violin while tuning it
watching this 6 years later and it really so helpful and detailed. You get straight to the point, so detailed. thank you for sharing
thanks!!
My brother has been playing fiddle jam with you since he was 5 yrs old. He's 24 now :-) I'm using his book and learning tons from you! Thank you!
Awesome!
Noice!
The process of exaggerating a problem in order to rectify it is pure gold. Thank you Mr. Perry.
I thought so too! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I'm totally new at this . Just bought a violin today. 56 yrs young.
Awesome!
Just had my third (lockdown Zoom) violin lesson as a 65+ absolute beginner and this so helpful, thank you! Also you’re the kind of teacher who’d make learning violin a lot of fun!

Damn I never thought of doing that to improve gaming
I'm really curious, how are you doing with playing the violin now?
this was extremely helpful, i just started playing and this made such a difference

Bridget O'Connor no. You just love to be happy that's all it is. 4 year olds are always happy but as we get older life beats it out. Good u still happy
Me too - and when he peeked back in at the end to ask, "Did that help?" Hahaha!
Same lol
Didn't realise my bow was wabbling because my planes weren't flat enough! instant improvement! thanks
I have been looking for answers as to why my violin is squeaking and you've helped me perfectly identify reasons that I've been unable to find anywhere else! Thank you so much!
Thank you! That’s awesome.
Geoff is a very accomplished professional musician. He knows his way around a fiddle, backward and forward.
My name Jeff......!
Wow. You are such an excellent teacher. Didn't think it was possible to understand without a teacher in person. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much!
Thank you i have been playing for about 1/3 of my life and i ALWAYS screech.
My violin will be here in 10 days. I am 69 and will be taking lessons to learn to play. Thank you for your wonderful tips. I played for 2 years when I was in elementary school and have a,ways wanted to go back to it although I do not remember much. I look forward to your videos...thank you so much.
This actually helps A LOT!! I've been doing this for about 2 months and this helps better than anything I've ever seen.
This has to be the most helpful video ever! You have a strong gift not only as a violinist, but as a teacher as well!! Thank you
You had a 93 year-old beginner? (PS - thanks.)
+Kenneth Espenschied You are never too old to start :D
+Gabo Ruiz I appreciate that. I've been thinking about it for a while... Most of the music I love best comes with a violin, and I'd like to make an attempt to learn.
+Kenneth Espenschied Yes I did.
+Kenneth Espenschied Go for it!
I started at age 83.
Been binge watching violin tips n stuff for the past 3 hours bc I rlly wanna start playing, I already feel like imma do okay! Thanks.
Yeah I use it against my sister or class
When I put the bow on the violin it squeaks. Reverse engineering is to keep the bow off the violin. Pure logic! Excellent , thank you!
parallel to the bridge!!! THANK YOU! Never thought about that
i’ve literally been playing violin/fiddle for 7 years and i can’t stop scratching and squeaking so THANK YOU
you are most welcome!
I second what 12ealDeal said. This has been the most helpful information I've found to correct bow squeak.
thanks for this video
I been doing this for a week and don’t see my self with out a violin ever and this video helps a lot and open the door for new sounds so thank you from my heart for taking the time to teach us the right ways to use the frog farts in stead of trying to stop them lol Jokes aside so far the best instructor !

Actually Mozart also knew how to play the violin.

Good and practical, no bullshit.

Awesome. Thanks.
I happen to have all the mistakes (beginner / noob )
This was the most insightful video I’ve seen. I’ve been struggling with that god forsaken scratch. THANK YOU.

This kind of comment, thrills me the most! Thank you!
I actually thought that you should push the bow down a lot to not make that noise
Thank you for this amazing tutorial!!!!! You explained everything perfectly. Good work!
can rosin effect the sound of the violin? Can it make a scratchy sound like what you've demonstrating?
Yes. Too much rosin can add to a scratchy sound. So can brand (read: formula)
This guy is a genuinely good teacher... wish I could give 2 👍👍.
Thanks! Come on over the Fiddle Jam Institute for more!
มีประโยชน์มากครับ thank u.
I'm an absolute beginner on the violin, and this video was very informative. Thank you for sharing the proper bowing and fingering technique, I shall put this information to very good use. Thanks again. :-)
+Boris Karloff Jr.83 My pleasure! Thanks!
I ALWAYS get the bow hair stuck on the bridge whenever im trying not to screech! Do you know how NOT to do that?
I do not know exactly what you mean on that one, but if you are hitting the bridge by accident, you are probably way too tight in your grip. All joints hold be loose and flexible, including the fingers and elbow.
Put away from bridge
I appreciate your experience your teaching technique is marvelous
Thanks!
Thank you, I'm just about to start learning, and figured I'd learn a little before I do, thank you for giving me a good idea how not to kill peoples ears around me XD
I love this! You explain in a easy way I understand and you make me laugh!
Perfect! That's EXACTLY what I was going for! Thanks!!
Idk but im laughing too hard throughout the video coz I do all these mistakes lmaoooo
You have just helped me SOOOOOOOOO much! I'm not pressing the strings hard enough with my left fingers. Thank you!
Me too!!!! It was very helpful, wasn't it? He seems a great and funny teacher....
Does the amount of rosin effect this sound?
It can, but it is really hard to over-do it (rosin) compared to good relaxed technique
Many thanks
thanks so much! i knew i was doing something wrong but i didn't know what. you made it simple for me to understand so i can work to avoid these issues!
My fingering hand is still wet though
