1. Rosin your bow (ten passes up and down each time you play) 2. Try applying rosin to the strings for more traction 3. Choke up on the bow 4. Move your bow across the string, don't try to push through it (4:55) 5. When you get the bowing motion smoother, try to make sure your bow hits the string near the end of the fretboard 6. Read ahead in your music so that you are not trying to play while you read. If you do, you'll learn bad bowing habits.
Jane Eyre sometimes it's not enough, it's just depends on how much is needed, from my personal experience. 10 is enough for somebody who isn't usually putting on rosin. Hope this helps

Ok, I will give credit where credit is due. I have been "plagued" by an inadequate violin sound for the past 6 months (scratchy, wispy and not very strong). I'm a player of about 2.5 years. I kept thinking that I must need my bow re-haired or something. I put SOME rosin on from time to time of course. But only after seeing your video did I decide to try putting a LOT. Sure enough, the tone evened out and the sound is much better now. All this time, I just lacked rosin! Thanks so much for that tip.

I swear, I’ve been playing my violin for 11 years, and all of sudden a few months back, I started playing really bad. As a doublebassist I can confirm we sometimes put rosin straight to the strings, especially for newly changed strings. The rosin needs to cover quite large area so we can have the 'bite' wherever we intend to bow (in bass it might be about 15cm from end of fingerboard to a bit above the bridge, so yeah quite lengthy). Recently learning violin seriously so I can duet with my gf, thankyou for the tips!

I think the hair must impact the amount of rosin needed. I have been disappointed with my sound as well. I've been applying rosin as I usually did with my other set up, one or two before each two (up to four) hour practice session. This was fine with my previous bow. My new one (I've had it 2 months) ...I tried the rosin on the strings and really over rosining the bow and poof! Sound fixed. Clean up was a bear, and I'll likely not use quite so much in the future (maybe half), but no more slipping and wispy bits.

In my opinion good tone production is dependent on 3 elements relating to the bow - pressure, speed and distance (from bridge/fingerboard) and 2 elements relating to the left hand - finger pressure and placement. Tension is the enemy and tension in the left hand usually impacts the right hand if one is not careful. The other part of of the tone problem for beginners are phrasing and dynamics in order to avoid the same level of monotony all the time.
To create good resonance/sound not only does it require all of this included, it also comes with practice and experience in general. When you learn more ab the violin theres certain things which can't really be explained easily. Edit: I've also used this when helping younger violinist so this really helps 😁

I've been playing for roughly 12 years. Just things I've picked up over the years.

My begining was hearing my mom saying, "Who is strangling the cat?" and "Can you find another place to make that dreadful racket?" This was actually helpful because I went into the wilderness miles from anyone at that time with my boom box radio to play by ear with different songs to discover the freedom of 'PLAYING OUT LOUDLY.'....rather being soft, delicate, timid, squeaky, shaky, quietly and shy. The full sound was glorious in realizing a wonderful tone. I came back home with a gift that mom gave me!😜

I guess something else that characterizes the not-beginner-anymore sound is articulation and modulation of the sound; small variations in weight and speed that make the sound more expressive.

Thanks for all the good advice! I’m a luthier and not a good violinist, but I ‘m passionate about the voice of the violin, and I totally agree that you should use plenty of rosin. And the brand of rosin can make a huge difference. Especially with new strings I always rosin the strings. With old rosin on the strings it can be a great help to remove that old rosin on the other hand. Nowadays it’s kind of chic to say that you hardly ever rosin the bow, and ok, you’ll more easily get a decent sound because it’s more forgiving, but how full, complex and interesting will your sound be? It comes down to your preferences of course but I am, like you, a fan of Thomastik strings, so we look for a brilliant, dynamic sound. If you want to have a very smooth and sweet sound it’s a different matter. Obligato, or even Violino strings and almost no rosin would be the way to go.
My rosin is very hard and hardly ever dusts the board, just the strings. How any times should I apply a hard rosin (back and forth) for a better and fuller sound?
@@cecilia7259 That would depend on how hard you press the rosin onto the bow hair. You also need more if the strings are new or if you recently got the bow rehaired. Apply the rosin until you’re happy with the friction and the sound. And never touch the bow hair or the strings between fingerboard and bridge of course 😊

I stumbled upon a free you tube channel that goes through this book in great detail. The TH-cam channel is Pro am strings. I have been redoing the book because the teacher is emphasizing bow devision and wants the bow at the frog at some notes and the tip at others. Before I was playing in the middle of the bow. As a beginner should I be worried about bow distribution so much?
Hi Luke, good for you that you have been working so well and patiently. At the beginner level, using whole bows may not be the top priority. However when you go to the next level, you will appreciate having access to the whole bows. I wish you all the best and wonderful practising!
My sounds improved immensely after i got Kolstein and Hill and Son. I HAVE TO use both and use a lot more than most people suggest and it makes a great difference.

I wanted to talk about this frog thing. I've been playing for 8 months so I'm kind of beginner. I was using the 2/3 part of the bow without notice. And last week my teacher said to me; you are not using the whole bow and I shocked beacuse I was thinking I was using the whole bow but I wasn't. So, I tried to use the all part of the bow and now I sound bad and this makes me so bad. I thought everything was okay but it wasn't. I can't use all the part of the bow, if i use it just sound awful 😭 And all of my motivation gone for this. What should I do? How can I sound good with 3/3 part of bow? 🥺
Dear Marta, when we are trying a new technique, such as accessing the bow near frog, could feel very uncomfortable and unnatural as the motions are new to us. But with time our body will adopt and normalize it making it easy like other already learned techniques. When playing near the frog, try to raise the right elbow and the right wrist , this will make your bow lighter , hence producing nicer tone. I hope you can try. Happy practising!
beginners don't fear. violin is a tough creature to tame. hard to pick it up and sound good at all in the first few weeks especially if you've never even handled a bowed instrument before. a beginner can strum a guitar and press keys on a piano producing pleasant sounds. a beginner on violin.... my dog was begging to go outside

My sounds improved immensely after i got Kolstein and Hill and Son. I HAVE TO use both and use a lot more than most people suggest and it makes a great difference.

I wanted to talk about this frog thing. I've been playing for 8 months so I'm kind of beginner. I was using the 2/3 part of the bow without notice. And last week my teacher said to me; you are not using the whole bow and I shocked beacuse I was thinking I was using the whole bow but I wasn't. So, I tried to use the all part of the bow and now I sound bad and this makes me so bad. I thought everything was okay but it wasn't. I can't use all the part of the bow, if i use it just sound awful 😭 And all of my motivation gone for this. What should I do? How can I sound good with 3/3 part of bow? 🥺
Dear Marta, when we are trying a new technique, such as accessing the bow near frog, could feel very uncomfortable and unnatural as the motions are new to us. But with time our body will adopt and normalize it making it easy like other already learned techniques. When playing near the frog, try to raise the right elbow and the right wrist , this will make your bow lighter , hence producing nicer tone. I hope you can try. Happy practising!

beginners don't fear. violin is a tough creature to tame. hard to pick it up and sound good at all in the first few weeks especially if you've never even handled a bowed instrument before.
a beginner can strum a guitar and press keys on a piano producing pleasant sounds. a beginner on violin.... my dog was begging to go outside
