I was into rock..like Deep Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin...Yes Genesis etc..but Focus opened my mind and ears to a different type of prog...which basically borders on classical music. Excellent choice .It's fun and also very well played by all. The vocal gymnastics of Thijs Van leer are amazing,as is the drumming and one my favourite Guitarists the virtuoso Jan Aakerman. They did a big hit with Sylvia a track off Focus 3. I would recommend an album of theirs Focus3. Especially tracks Anonymous 2 and Questions Answers Answers Questions. these chime in at 13 minutes and 26 minutes respectively. Quite jazzy, proggy. Worth a listen if you like epics.
Nathan, you really ought to check out some of the full studio albums when the mood strikes you. The "hits" (Sylvia and Hocus Pocus) are great, but there are so many other gems on Moving Waves, Focus 3 and Hamburger Concerto. Top tier instrumental prog.
Regarding being told to have Jana react to whole albums when she hears an isolated track from a concept album. :If: it is a track which interest her, since Jana is a fan of musicals, there may be some concept albums which may pique her interest. I, of course, would suggest introducing her to all of Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow, including the artwork and integrated story. But, it would be very difficult to do an isolated track to see if the sound catches her ear, as they all purposefully run one in to the other. As a trained singer, if Jana doesn't know it, she may appreciate the Moody Blues Days of Future Passed by album sides, although that's more art rock than prog. But, it is considered a prototype to prog. Then, if that engages her, maybe doing the rest of the Moody Blues Magnificent Seven albums, also by album sides. They become more progressive with the second of the seven, In Search of the Lost Chord and continue through Seventh Sojourn. Just a suggestion, if Jana would be open to considering.
I think a better description of this music than prog would be this: If circus performers did lsd and tried to combine rock music with opera... but that's just me 🎪🤹♀️😱😎🙂
Another progband like Focus that used humour as part of the music is the German Symphonic progband Grobschnitt. Also you can relate it somewhat to some of the music by Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, though Zappa is much more structurally complex.
As fun a novelty song as this is, definitely not representative. Probably among my 10 least favorite focus songs due to the repetitive riff. Thijs van Leer is a very talented flautist and released a series of classical flute albums in the later 70s including flute covers of many of his focus songs. I’m late to your channel, maybe you’ve explored them more by now. Their first four albums are their peak (and the only ones I've had multiple listens to, so far), although I've heard all the albums at least once and the newer revival albums are pretty good too.
No problem, our style certainly isn’t for everyone! I used to worry about the amount of talking before the song, but decided we just have to be ourselves and hope that people enjoy our personalities. Feel free to skip ahead to the song if you prefer- I agree it is a great one! 😀👍

It might be impossible to not like this song. The crazy skillful guitar in this, offsetting the utter goofiness, is such a great combo. 👍

Quirky? Try KAYAK ( Mammoth ) Also prog, and Dutch, or Supersister ( She Was Naked ), same story.
I did it to my wife too. She liked it. But, she likes half the prog I play.
