I get the point about the value of the Macbook over the base Studio. But if you know you are never leaving your desk, then all you get is a more expensive device with less ports, more awkward desk footprint, and a battery to fail or even swell from leaving it plugged in for 5 years straight.

I just upgraded from a 2015 i7 iMac to the base $2000 Mac Studio for music production & man is this machine a beast. Got most of my plugins working & no major issues so far. Another benefit of upgrading to the new system w/ Monterey is I was able to get the newest version of LogicX. This fixed several issues I was having on my old system.

THanks for sharing! I'm also thinking about upgrading. I have a 2017 i7 macbook pro mainly for making music using LogicX. Everything is working fine so I really don't know if I should give my old machine up for only $300 trade-in price. But on the other hand, in 2/3 years I have to upgrade anyways. optimizing code for the hardware is quite difficult. The sad reality is it takes lots of time with different workloads. As you improve one area, some other area becomes the bottleneck. Even with NVidia cards, optimizing code is time consuming. Look at cyberpunk and how bad it was at launch day. Keeping the GPU fed is quite tough.

If you want the best use of the Ultra chips, set up a virtual machine and pin it to use the cpu and gpu cores on the second cpu. You can then run a video renders in parallel, one on bare metal and the other in the VM at the same time on the same machine. Each machine will be slightly slower than running one job stand alone but together they should run at a much more productive rate than doing them sequentially.

This is an interesting information video on the various configurations of the Apple Mac Studio Computer. I recently replaced a very well equipped 2015 model 27 inch iMac with a base model Mac Studio equipped with a 1 terabyte solid state drive. I am just a home user, using this computer at home. When I was investigating the base model Mac Studio at the Apple store, I found it to be about twice as fast as the 2015 iMac that I had. So far I am very satisfied with this Mac Studio computer. For home use the base model Mac Studio computer is a very fast computer and the Studio Display is a very good display.

Great content, as usual. I'm following this M1 family really close because I'm planning to jump from PC to Mac soon. I didn't do that yet because Unreal Engine 5 still doesn't run really well on M1s, and Houdini just received a beta version based on metal. So, these two pieces of software are essential for my workflow. That's the reason why I'd like to ask you guys to include Houdini and UE5 in your tests. Houdini especially, as we have other channels covering UE5 on M1s, but nothing for Houdini. I think Houdini could do really well because you can use the GPU to accelerate a lot of simulations, but it was always pushed back by the VRAM limitation. I'd love to see a sim using 128GB of VRAM that the M1 Ultra can provide. Thank you.

For Davinci Resolve the 8k Canon Raw Debayer / Decoder is almost entirely CPU bound. Is it the same in FCP? I would think so, but not positive. If it is , then 8K Canon Raw to HEVC shouldn't use the GPU much at all. CPU and Hardware Encoder should be used heavily though. Anyway thanks for the great testing and videos.

I upgraded to a Mac Studio Apple M1 Max from a mid- or late 2015 21.5" iMac a little over a month ago and am very happy with it, except that I miss the quality of the iMac speakers. I primarily use the database software FileMaker Pro in my work--also some still photo manipulation and editing--and this machine has been a big improvement. The iMac seemed to always be around 155ºF, and this is 92º right now. I like that the CPU load on this is now 11%, whereas I probably used 80-90% on the iMac. I probably could have gotten less computer and been happy with it, but I paid under $500 for two Dell monitors, and the only hole I need to fill now is with better speakers. I'm not a huge audiophile--I was satisfied most of the time with the iMac speakers. Does anyone have a recommendation for me?

Loved the in-depth review, although much of the tech talk is over my head. My question is: I want the best current solution from Apple for Final Cut/Premeire video editing and Avid ProTools. These are exclsuviely my primary workflow software needs. Should I buy the base Mac Studio M-1 Max, or do I get more from the M1-Ultra? Based on your review, I would conclude the former will more than suffice. I should also point out I'd rather not go the MacBook route as I don't do any on-site work where that flexibility is beneficial.

Your series of videos on Mac Studio are awesome. As a video editor, I can't thank you enough. This is a big purchase for me and I want to make the right choice. I've seen you touch on memory size and it's the one thing I’m stuck on! I’m a 4k film editor. My heavy workflow involves DaVinci resolve with multiple timelines, all huge raw files, color, fusion, the works. Add in simultaneously completing graphic work in after effects and photoshop. Throw in some music editing. And general browsing/emails/juggling in the background. The Ultra 48 core seems to be my clear choice for smoothness and speed of workflow (export time!). But... BIG QUESTION... 64gb or 128gb?!?!? I'm willing to spend on the 128 if it's gonna guarantee things moving like butter. But would like to use the budget elsewhere if it's a total waste and unnecessary. Help obi wan. :)

A heads up for anyone who plans to buy this and works in a quiet environment. The fans idle at around 1300 rpm and you can definitely hear them if you're working in a quiet room. In an office or studio environment you won't hear them but if you're working in a home office you'll hear them for sure. Keep this in mind if you don't like to hear fan noise while you're working.

My plan was to buy the M1 Ultra 48 core with 64GB Memory and 4TB storage using the LG UltraWide 40WP95C-W 39.7" 21:9 Curved FreeSync 5K2K HDR IPS Monitor. I like the wide monitors better than any 27” +/- monitor. My reason for going with the M1 Ultra is for the extra thunderbolt ports and what I thought was more power for future proofing the system. After watching this video, I’m not so sure now. Based on my use, do you think the system I’m considering would be slower or faster than the Mac Studio M1 Max?

In the mid 1990's I experienced failure of real time video capture software that I wrote when the system memory was increased beyond 256 MB (yeah... old days). Everyone was surprised to see performance go down when memory was increased. It turned out to be caused by exhaustion of the TLB in the MIPS processor that was being used (old SGI workstation). Beyond 256 MB ram the OS would start to swap TLB cache entries and the extra load slowed things down enough to cause the realtime time code to fail. It's rare to hear of performance problems related to TLB size, but it does happen as we see with this video.
