As someone who has jumped back and forth from Mac to PC since I first started using a computer, it's so refreshing to see an Apple channel that is willing to tell it like it is. Jonathan, you're a fan, not a fanboy, which means the missteps are going to sting way more when you are self-aware enough to not delude yourself into thinking every bug is a feature.
Please keep being as critical as you can handle for as long as you feel comfortable doing the work. Your perspective is as invaluable in this space as your production value in each installment is top tier. Seriously, lugging a whole setup with a battery to a beach? You madman.

To an extent that's one advantage of knowing that Apple will never send review samples to LMG. Linus started this channel knowing that he'd have to buy the hardware Jonathan would be featuring, and getting nothing from Apple themselves as review samples, like they do with many of the hardware items they review on LTT and unbox on ShortCircuit.

"Hater" would be a strong term. Jonathan clearly comes from a strong love of Apple, showing his knowledge of the history of their company and their product line. Liking what an entity has done and then getting into the business of writing media with them as a subject can take the shine off that love for them and that's perfectly understandable. It makes the writer more trustworthy to hear said critique along with some enthusiasm.
Admittedly Apple oriented media creators that want to remain objective right now may have a hard time remaining enthusiastic considering their clearly anti-consumer stances on many subjects and products.
Jonathan, we love your knowledge and your presentation style. They're what keep us coming back to Mac Address. Keep doing you, man.

@Jaquan Kelsor I "need" a channel to keep me entertained. The beauty of humanity is the ability to be retrospective in order to learn or critize what we are told. in this regard, most viewers I would like to think come here with an open mind but vastly different opinions. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has noticed. I've definitely noticed a shift in apple's attitudes toward their customers over the last year or so. There was a definite shift away from the customer's best interest over the course of 2016 through 2019 with the arguably terrible MacBooks, removal of the headphone jack, and incremental or lackluster updates across the entirety of their product line. Starting with the 2019 MacBook pro and iphone 11 series we saw a shift back toward the customer, with a return to innovation, switch to apple silicon, and generally well regarded software updates that spanned a significant spectrum of their product line. Far from perfect, but certainly better than it was. But now we're going back again it seems. Many more years of machines than usual were put on the chopping block with limited support for the new versions of iOS and macOS, we're back to incremental updates on dated designs, the consumer is forced into a product they may not need just for the single spec they want, and repairability seems more an artifact of malicious compliance than anything else. The software point hits extra hard for me because I have the a12z iPad pro and yet I don't get access to arguably the best features of ipadOS 16. Feels like a bit of a slap in the face. I hope Apple corrects course a bit here but I'm not holding my breath.

I just think these perspectives are too general to be useful. I'm a musician. Up to earlier this year, I had hung onto my intel Mac Mini until the studio was released. I have a good screen, I want the power of a Mac with the convenience of a desktop where I don't have to buy the screen (iMac) or the whole thing (any laptop). I needed the _ports_ and connectivity -- the M1 Max Mac Studio was perfect.

Coming from a non apple user
"Power of a mac" do you mean in workflow? Because exept for a beefed up mac pro a decent windows or linux desktop will wipe out a mac in raw performance (at the cost of heat) including many optimised programmes

Weirdest place was in a McDonald's kids indoor area. I met a family there from Craigslist to show and sell my mac mini. The computer booted, but the monitor I brought wasn't working for some reason, so I couldn't prove that it was actually working. I thought I lost the sale, but they asked if they could call if they got home and still had a problem. I said "sure" and never heard from them again. I hope the computer made that family happy. The machine was in great condition.

I personally prefer having a custom built Windows desktop so that it fits my specific needs for music production and gaming but I really love the MacBook air as my laptop for convenience, perfect for browsing the internet on the couch, keeping track of recipes in the kitchen, setting it up as a place to stream movies from, etc. And it feels great to use (so light, great key board, bright screen, excellent battery life). That wan show clip was quite the moment to hear live. I didn't expect to hear a followup to it on this channel.
You are such a classic case of being the most critical of something you love. While not quite a good example, it's like the nintendo enthusiasm in my circles. You just wanna love the company so much for its legacy, and hits big hits. Yet they make it so difficult to love their products unconditionally.
This is such a good self aware piece.

What I find missing in the whole ‘efficiency-discussion’: I never heard anybody pointing out what more efficient processors really mean in the long term. Power is not unlimited neither economically nor in regard to ressources (even if it’s renewable energy). Especially now it’s stupid to reach more frames by just pumping in more watts. You will pay a significant amount of money in the long term. To become more sustainable, everything in our daily lives needs to be more efficient. So at least from that perspective, Apples approach seems more sustainable.

I'm so happy with what apple's doing with their chips, and i commend them, and I really like the IO and small footprint of my mac studio.
That said I can't help but feel a bit disappointed with its design...for a brand new product, I'd have expected a radical new design, not a frankly ugly taller mac pro...
I hope they'll give us something exciting with the 2022 mac pro.

While I am currently coming into the ecosystem and love my purchases, I also think your criticism are more than valid and questions worth asking. Like your iPhone SE refresh video that asked the questions, "Who is the target customer." That while I want to shift to an iPhone from my aching Android, it made me evaluate my needs, the downsides for going to an SE vs other iPhone choices.
Too often I find those more passionate channels glossing over those mistakes, or highlighting and fawning over choices that ultimately don't matter for me (that much). So thank you for being the voice of reason in the room.
I think, together with strong competitors, the best thing for Apple to have is people that do like Apple's walled garden, but can articulate what they would wish for.

At least for music production my M1 Ultra is quite literally double the performance of M1 Max, so it’s enough of a “Mac Pro” for my needs. When the real Mac Pro gets announced I fully expect it to be so eye-wateringly out of my price range that FOMO won’t even be a factor.
