Those later Vauxhall engines used to show 'mayo' if they've been doing short journeys or little use. Maybe worth trying an engine flush then new oil & filter. Also sounds like the chain tensioner may be starting to go Bargain for £150 though 👌
You need to pressure test it, it's the best way to test a head gasket. If the gaskets gone between two cylinders and not near the water jacket exhaust won't make it's way into the expansion bottle, so the gas test won't show yellow
Hi mate, top tip I've rebuilt a few of these engines, as soon as you can get the sump pan off and check the oil pick up tube, they tend to clog up with debris and the top end gets starved of oil and knackers the head assembly. They're not bad engines really and they're pretty tough, if looked after.
We see a lot of these in our workshop and I have to say they’re poor engines tbh, rattly, underpowered and prone to a host of issues.. timing chains, hydraulic lifters, snapping camshafts, head gaskets, cracked blocks, top end rebuilds. Even with proper servicing.
Thank you somebody who knows they are a pretty good engine to be honest but nobody looks after them at all 90% of the problems are down to lack of maintenance at correct intervals but they are underpowered
I’d personally try my luck with a good service, fresh oil, fresh coolant and flush, fresh plugs and coil packs she’s definitely misfiring, take it from there. Monitor for oil/coolant mix. Probably worth running a compression test across cylinders too 👍🏼
Everything you said. Its definitely misfire and i believe its pretty common on those for coil pack to go tits up. So much so AA patrols carry them coils on board as stock.
Ive got one of these Astras as a daily, with the exact same engine, woeful engines tbh, rattly, underpowered. Ignore the mayo in the cap its very common in these with short journeys or if they’ve been sat for a while. That rattling could be the timing chain which is soo common on these engines, about £400-£600 at a garage or about £60 for the kit if you do it yourself. Great video btw!
Your mad scientist head tester isn't worth the plastic it's made from. Get a decent one with a bulb on the end so you can squeeze it and get the air/gasses through the fluid and that will be more accurate. Also check the dipstick to see if you can see water on the stick also check with the engine running the dip stick tube and filler cap for any blow by. The cams looked good as if their was water in the engine it normally gums up pretty good. And see if you can see any oil in the coolent drain decent emount leave it to sit for a few hours and it will separate. Nice Easy engines to work on you'll have no trouble at all going a timing chain and head gasket on the drive at home and just get the head skimmed if required so don't worry. Looking forward to more content and happy new year pal 👍
I think the reason the corsa videos do well is because it’s a cheaper car we can all relate to makes it more enjoyable if you ask me. Looking forward to this project bro 👊 🔥
Defo worth getting the chain looked at, from memory these motors run on timing chains so can become very noisey! Get a full service on it, 02 sensor, an engine bay clean see if that mayo comes back!
My guess is it’s running lean because of the o2 sensor. That sounds like lean pop on the engine. I’d also drop the oil. Easy way to tell if it’s got coolant in it. Same with the coolant. Just drop it and see if it’s mixed.
Had the same problem with my corsa d ,had the timing chain replaced with new gasket ,guides and sprockets ,my trouble was someone reused the timing chain gasket and stuck it back on with silicone, ran alot quiter after.
I’ve had a few of these with supposed headgasket issues. I changed the thermostats, flushed the coolant a few times and serviced them. Put about 100/150 miles on them after and they never overheated.
Had quite abit on my corsa's cap when i got it. Changed the rocker cover gasket and you could see it all in one corner where the old gasket had failed. That was a year ago and never came back.
Personally if it’s not over heating try a set off plugs and that may stop the misfire I had a 328i e36 with rlly bad milk on the oil cap but wasn’t headgasket it was just condensation
Exactly the same issue on my Son's old Corsa, quickly diagnosed with a new timing chain kit. Throw on a new rocker cover gasket too after cleaning out the breather pipes.
I have a 2011 astra van h . Some people slag them off but you know what had it 12 years since new and uts been so reliable.. regular maintenance is all thay need i do a service eavery 6 months.. it is currently in need of a Alternator but it still got me 200 miles to wales and back with a Alternator that barely charges.. look after them properly and thay keep going
I cant comment on the Head Gasket but it needs testing correctly, if deemed the gasket is good then start with your 02 sensor before the cat, reset it and run it to relearn the values. Service the thing, oil/filter - plugs, flush the coolant, change the thermostat, check there is no coolant leaking from the EGR side which to be honest with these cars just take it off and clean it and refit with new gasket. Rocker cover gasket is easy and cheap, whilst the rocker cover is off clean the cover and check the breather piper holes are not all gunked up and the associated hoses top right of the rocker cover. Also check the oil pressure switch is not leaking, as another common one. I have a fixer upper run round, same as this and I have done all the above, and the coil pack , several thousand miles later, I have now have the thing running very rich, with the EML on and fault code indicating a fuel trim issue, I am going to test the MAF sensor tomorrow, as this is another common thing to go on these. Its a good run around when it works, mine is also very tap tap tappy on idle and it sounds like there is a rattle on turn over which I believe is oil starvation. I am eager to see what you do with this, if the head is fine then hopefully that sensor will sort your running problem.
That’s just condensation under the oil cap. Misfire will be o2 sensor and engine light will come on if you drive it I think. May actually be a really cheap fix 🤞🏽
I’m quite familiar with these engines, it’s all normal after that mileage including the rattles and leak from rocker gasket, if head has blown it usually spews pressure out of expansion tank With cap closed , often a heavy white smoke from exhaust, the mayo is probably condensation, wipe it off and get hot and see if it clears a bit, also sounds like it’s probably overdue its oil service, Vauxhall say yearly my advice on this engine every 6 months for anyone that plans to keep the car, the temperature can top best side of 100c before cooling fan kicks in, that can be a shock when you first see it. Despite quirks of Astra H they’re still a good drivers car and fairly reliable.
Change the oil pressure sensor/switch cheap as chips. Take that bigger breather pipe off the rocker cover and clean the inside. To reset key put in ignition, turn to one position and press lock and unlock button on key fob
No "mayo" on dipstick i say you be fine timing chain might be issue they usually good for 130k on a good serviced engine. People seem neglect oil changes on chained engines but think the crap in the oil gets between the links in a chain and make it wear which makes in stretch.
Renault Twingo's are notorious for "Mayo cap". They basically have it unless it's hot outside(ambient temp). Short journey, long journey, you name it. I always thought like you it was either headgasket or short journeys, simply not the case!
The mayo on the cap is just condensation buildup thats mixed with the oil. A engine flush and new oil will sort that. Try getting car upto temp and giving engine a rev and see if it smokes as it could be piston rings or valve stem seals
Pressure test all the cylinders it is possible to have a blown head gasket and only have coolant leaking into the oil, I had a similar issue on my 1991 Suzuki gsxr400 except the exhaust gases was getting into the coolant but not the oil and that was down to a blown head gasket but luckily a sniff test gave me the answers but for you, you’ll definitely need to do a leak down test on the cylinders if that comes back fine then you know your head gasket is fine. Hope this helps
I've had many vauxhalls the cream on the oil cape could be condensation like you said...I'd personally flush the oil water ect go from there...on the video it sounds like it has a miss but a chain driven car sounds the same (if it's a chain) Would be worth a full service after you know 1000% the heads not gone Good luck with it mate nice to see someone else working on vauxhalls and not bloody 30-40 grand cars 😂
Not sure if these engines have one but if theres an oil cooler that coolant passes through that could also be the reason for "mayo" on the oil cap but as previous comments have said a pressure test will show alot easier also a compression test would show a failing headgasket as cylinder pressure would be less if the gasket has failed
I had exactly the same issue on same engine. Same symptoms as yours (engine light, rough running, mayo under cap and same codes for 02 sensors) it only cost 450 for the car so bought cheap 02 sensors to try and get me through another few months of motoring. Both sensors were a nightmare to remove!! Managed to change them and made no difference at all. In the end I suspect it was head gasket. I ran the car until it went pop and got rid!
I did have feeling it might have been an astra, based off the driver seats when you sitting inside the car, my friends got an Astra H SXI and they're lovely cars to drive, not the most rapid thing but handles very well actually 🙂
I've been following you since the beginning and have enjoyed all your videos, but this project is going to be one of my favorites because I have an Astra H with the same engine. I also had a burnt cylinder head gasket because the accessory belt broke while driving (you can ask the previous owner if his accessory belt broke while driving), check if the antifreeze is leaking or if the antifreeze is bubbling in the expansion tank if there are air bubbles in the expansion tank, check if it loses antifreeze from one day to the next, check the cap on the expansion tank if it is defective (when it is defective the tests fail and let you think that it would not be the head gasket), you can try with another cap that you know is not defective and if the engine goes crazy with the new cap then the cylinder head gasket is burnt. For you, it could be something else, maybe the water pump. The infernal noise from the engine may be due to the distribution, it did the same to me and I also changed it at the same number of kilometers.
You've touched on a good point mate, I've repaired a few of these that have cooked themselves due to the belt being thrown off/shredded and with no temp gauge the driver has no idea it's cooking itself the only clue is the battery light, as alternator isn't turning.
@@jameznmThank you, mate! You're right, you don't realize if the cylinder head gasket will burn because you don't see the temperature of the water in the engine. In my case, the accessory belt broke while I was driving on a national road and I didn't realize it in time because I was listening to the music a bit loud, I realized it when I noticed that the power steering stopped working, then I saw the battery light and after that the smoke also appeared. Since then I listen to music at a normal volume, enter the secret menu and check the temperature and check as often as I can. 😂 Most importantly, I check the accessory belt and change it on time!
It needs a major service fresh coolant spark plugs coil packs but I’m sure these engines have one long single coilpack also do the air filter clean the mass air flow sensor also replace the o2 sensor as well and take it for a long drive
Alot of short trips can cause condensation under the oil cap causing the mayonnaise because the car hasnt been ran long enough for the oil to warm up remember coolant will always warm quicker then oil, so just because water might be upto temp doesnt mean the oil would be, also im sure these vauxhall engines have problems with pcv pipes and the pcv valve which could also be causing the mayonnaise under the oil cap
Start the car feel the radiator hoses see if they pressurize- also sure these engines have condensation in the top of the engine if they are used in short journeys that can give mayo
Ive got the Sri and when mine sounded like that it was the coil pack there known to always go on these plus change the plugs at same time, the cap just looks like condensation due to not being run for a while
Oil leak dripping on the manifold is the laminate gasket its an o ring and just deteriorated over time, misfire could be the coil pack, rattle on start up is probably VVT pulleys as had the same on mine, easy job to do and if you're doing the gasket then all is doable during that job piece of piss to do let me know if you need any advice
I've had a 59 reg Astra just like yours and same engine. Mayo on the oil cap, always was condensation due to short runs in the winter. During summer was fine. And I've had exactly the same problem with the O2 sensor or lambda. But in my case was both of them. And it was running shitty like yours. Change both O2 sensors or get them from scrapyard and you'll be having a cheap car running.
I had an astra with head gasket failure exact same engine i still have an astra i have the 1.7 cdti i live very local to burton be happy to give you a hand if you want sounds very noisy tho with that rattle may be worth replacing timing chain check dipstick if the dipstick is milky then head gasket has deffo failed, also the milk in the oil cap is common on these engines most likely condensation in the rocker cover change spark plugs might help and also coil pack in terms of a misfire also with mine i could smell petrol in the coolant bottle give it a smell to see if you can but most likely i reckon the head gasket is good maybe a mega major service will bring it back to good health
I’ve got an Astra and most likely it’s the head gasket. Mine was exactly like that, hardly had any tell tail signs I did everything else but at the end it was the Head Gasket. Best thing to do is pressure test it first though…
ive had several of these astras very common for the oil pressure switch to leak so check that cheap and easy that one its located at front of engine left hand side
Mate, the engine sounded like A box of nails in a washing machine on start up, common for the timing chains to stretch on these engines, I’d say that is why previous owner hasn’t got it sorted, if timing is out this would also cause a misfire, I’d ignore the oil cap mayo, most likely condensation or indeed the Pcv valve which is built into the cam cover 👍
An 11 plate mk5 vauxhall Astra, one of the very last before the mk6 changeover at 60 plate. The Astra van derived from the mk5 estate lasted until 2013 63 plate. It would be nice to save this Astra, plenty parts available from scrapyards etc. Vauxhall reinstated the analogue temperature gauge in the mk6 and mk7.
If you replace the o2 sensor, take the battery off first mate. I diagnosed a car for a customer it was bank 1 02 sensor, customer said they'd replace that themselves, next day i got a call to say theyd replaced it and it started overfuelling badly, stalling, and all the lights on the dash came on. Turns out they fried the ecu somehow.
Good video keep up the good work you can see it's a fairly new 02 sensor don't get a cheap 02 sensor as all vauxhalls hate cheap ones will need a bosh one or dealer one. This is best advice I can give you.
Them testers only work if the head gasket has blown in the correct place aka cylinder to coolant. But head gasket can blow coolant to oil ways dumping coolant in the oil
The noise could be coming from the timing belt area and the tensioners I doubt the mayo under the cap is anything more than condensation if it's been sitting Also use a OEM O2 sensor the aftermarket ones are rubbish A good service and those things and it should be fine I rate the 1.8 vauxhall engine good strong engines if you keep on top of them
You might just need a new timing chain! I changed my timing chain on my corsa on my driveway a few years back, took me a couple days but saved a fortune and would make great content! Also the mayo on the cap was the same with mine and it was just condensation in the end! After a new chain you couldn’t even hear the engine on! Good luck with it, look forward to the videos!
Awesome bro did say an Astra .. looking forward to future content on this.. them plugs look like burning to much oil .. think head gasket as definitely gone bro.. another reason sounds rattley is cam chain they rattle bad on them astra,s . But don’t give up on the old girl . 👍🏻👌👊🏻
Get the rocker cover of and heck the rockers mines sounded like that turned out the tappats broke by the rocker which then broke the rocker leading to the head gasket failure as one bank stopped working, also check the steering rack the thr pinion goes in to the rack the housing around it breaks, just seen the steering rack on the one scanner
My oil cap always looked like that when I had one, timing chain love making a noise before I change it, the oil pressure sensor at the front on for engine would let oil out which run down the front.
It’s the oil cooler mixing coolant with oil and that’s probably where the oil leak is dripping down onto your down pipe .. it’s part of the oil filter housing
Id just change the lambda sensor and see what its like after. I dont think it will be head gasket tbh, with it being sat fir ages id say its just condensation build up on the cap
Someone has probably changed the body control module under bonnet (common place for water ingress and knackers them) I think that would explain your key issue as if they've changed it from another car they probably changed the transponder ring clocks and other stuff linked all at the same time ... does sound rough as hell I would start with an engine flush service and remove body control module and see if there is any corrosion on the pins of the main wiring causing you some issues just my penny's worth mate
could be the timing case gasket where the water comes from the engine it passes through the timing case to get to the water pump the gasket leaks and water gets into the timing case and in the oil system. Just done my sons corsa i thought it was head gasket to but it was the timing case gasket. . .
Looks like the timing chain cover gasket has failed where the water pump bolts through, very common on the Vauxhall 1.2/1.4 engines, had this myself as well as a noisy timing chain so change that at the same time 🔧👍
Compression test I would do . See what that comes back as across all 4 cylinders. Parts for them mk5 astra pretty cheap to get for 150 pound you payed for it . Even If you can't fix stripping it for parts you wound get your money back and more
Is the oil pressure sensor sound ? I had a leak on mine was dripping onto the engine and causing the oil burning smell . Eventually gave up completely and pissed oil all over .
Not sure if you're aware bud, but looking back though the MOT history one of the testers mentions rear axle stub distortion possibly from an accident... Might be worth pulling the back end apart for closer inspection just for safety really.
There’s a very obvious exhaust leak causing that noise which would also cause the o2 sensor code because that sensor is 2 (after cat). Also those plugs need replacing you can see slight yellowing in the white plastic which means they’re fucked
My mate had a astra the exact same as this same engine that I use to work on with the gunk under the cap we done the head gasket the same test as you head gasket was fine it never over heated or anything my girlfriends dad is a mechanic apparently them engines only like the original vauxhall oil an he said it was condensating as he was literally turning the engine off before it was fully warm as he worked so local an he said that probably wasn't helping with the mayo on the cap
we have a 2 year old vaux vivaro van at work.... exp tank has gone all yellow.. bubbles in it... and salad cream on the exp cap 50k miles used every day.. runs fine... but they shi..e anyway.. how would we know.. my mums 12 old corsa is same... go figure.. N x
If you turn the astra off hold your foot on the break and accelerator peddle then turn the key till the dash lights come on the car will do its own diagnostic checks if its anything electrical fault it will give you a p00 code
This engine has problems with the head gasket the timing chain and the hydraulic lifters but it sounds like timing chain got to much slack when reviving it up

Bargain for £150 though 👌
You need to pressure test it, it's the best way to test a head gasket. If the gaskets gone between two cylinders and not near the water jacket exhaust won't make it's way into the expansion bottle, so the gas test won't show yellow
That's what I was going to say
Defo check comp, if head gaskets gone at least one cylinder will be low
Also sounds like an exhaust manifold leak somewhere too... 👂

First instinct with a rough-sounding Vauxhall should always be new spark plugs and coil pack. Vauxhall coil packs are notorious.
Check if there is Mayo in the dip stick and check the breather pipes which do clog up with Mayo too.

Ive got the Sri and when mine sounded like that it was the coil pack there known to always go on these plus change the plugs at same time, the cap just looks like condensation due to not being run for a while
Check the coilpack first for the misfire and the mayoncould be condensation if its been sat
Mate, the engine sounded like
A box of nails in a washing machine on start up, common for the timing chains to stretch on these engines, I’d say that is why previous owner hasn’t got it sorted, if timing is out this would also cause a misfire, I’d ignore the oil cap mayo, most likely condensation or indeed the Pcv valve which is built into the cam cover 👍
Means nowt lad just means that the 11 plated mk5s where not sold and sat a few months before registered mk 6 came out on a 59 plate
Sometimes the liquid colour doesn’t change even with a blown head gasket
The noise could be coming from the timing belt area and the tensioners
I doubt the mayo under the cap is anything more than condensation if it's been sitting
Also use a OEM O2 sensor the aftermarket ones are rubbish
A good service and those things and it should be fine
I rate the 1.8 vauxhall engine good strong engines if you keep on top of them
Well l would change all of the spark plugs with brand new ones and may be empty the thermostat and enter fresh violent into the coolenr
I would change the both engine and rocker cover gasket..
Having mixed signs has confused me as well so I would change both..
And the tapping noise is the vvt valves try removing the filters on them giving it a better oil feed
starting first coil pack and new spark plugs
My past experience with astra is the white stuff doesn't mean head gasket them engine top half runs hot and the bottom cold
Oil cooler, oil pressure switch or rocker cover gasket you want to check for the oil leak. There all common on these engines,
It's missing which usually is a sign of head gasket failure! Which is why eml is on. Could also be coil pack!
Get O2 sensor done, rocker cover gasket, and full service, and prob pump and belts
Genuine o2 sensor
A full service including plugs and coil pack.
Also a fluids flush
Id just change the lambda sensor and see what its like after. I dont think it will be head gasket tbh, with it being sat fir ages id say its just condensation build up on the cap
YES ! Can't wait for this content. I've has 2 Astra s in the past. Loved working on them, can't wait to see what your gonna do.
When u do the head gasket test block off the breather hole as the gas will escape from it I had the same problem with a corsa
Ah man now I miss my 07 Astra SRi 1.9CDTi. Keep up the great work my guy.
Someone has probably changed the body control module under bonnet (common place for water ingress and knackers them) I think that would explain your key issue as if they've changed it from another car they probably changed the transponder ring clocks and other stuff linked all at the same time ... does sound rough as hell I would start with an engine flush service and remove body control module and see if there is any corrosion on the pins of the main wiring causing you some issues just my penny's worth mate
could be the timing case gasket where the water comes from the engine it passes through the timing case to get to the water pump
the gasket leaks and water gets into the timing case and in the oil system. Just done my sons corsa i thought it was head gasket
to but it was the timing case gasket.
.
.
Yes what an amazing idea 💡 I love Astra’s can’t wait for the new videos of you doing the Astra up
Fair play to you mate for pushing this to the max now! Came along way from back in the day 💯💯💯
Z20leh or z20let it, cheap and tuneable and would be a great series!
Pressure test best way also put that liquid near exhaust to test the chemical reaction, those cheap kits usually pointless
Looks like the timing chain cover gasket has failed where the water pump bolts through, very common on the Vauxhall 1.2/1.4 engines, had this myself as well as a noisy timing chain so change that at the same time 🔧👍
Ahhh explains why I never noticed what was on the drive before the Corsa it's a astra to many of them round here 😂
I would give it a good service and o2 sensor and would change the egr valve and cooler there are so common to go wrong plus a coolant flush
Compression test I would do . See what that comes back as across all 4 cylinders.
Parts for them mk5 astra pretty cheap to get for 150 pound you payed for it . Even If you can't fix stripping it for parts you wound get your money back and more
One of the very last mk5s.....loving the vaux content jesse lad, this is why i 1st sub'd in the corsa days
another nice old’ish’ vauxhall on the channel 👌🏻 unfortunately it isn’t an SRI though, the SRI astra was a 1.8 with a ‘sport’ button above the radio
the residue on the oil cap is quite normal on vauxhall engines they always get condensation
Best shape Astra imo!
These (and Vectra Bs) were renowned for the coil packs going and they don't always throw a code either ... cheap fix though.
There’s a very obvious exhaust leak causing that noise which would also cause the o2 sensor code because that sensor is 2 (after cat). Also those plugs need replacing you can see slight yellowing in the white plastic which means they’re fucked
Compression test the cylinders, coolant pressure test also. Quite normal that under the oil cap.
Change rocker cover and the gasket and check the breather pipes for sludge
My mate had a astra the exact same as this same engine that I use to work on with the gunk under the cap we done the head gasket the same test as you head gasket was fine it never over heated or anything my girlfriends dad is a mechanic apparently them engines only like the original vauxhall oil an he said it was condensating as he was literally turning the engine off before it was fully warm as he worked so local an he said that probably wasn't helping with the mayo on the cap
we have a 2 year old vaux vivaro van at work....
exp tank has gone all yellow..
bubbles in it...
and salad cream on the exp cap
50k miles used every day..
runs fine... but they shi..e anyway.. how would we know..
my mums 12 old corsa is same...
go figure..
N x
It'll be the oil cooler that's probably failed mixing the coolant and oil. It sits behind the exhaust manifold. Common on this type of engine.
Second that
z12 / z14 xep (1.0/1.2/1.4) doesnt have oil coolers behind the engines, you are thinking of the z16xer / z18xer 1.6 and 1.8 engines
Check the head bolts are tighten down and not loose
You Did a good job wrapping the corsa fix the Astra and wrap the car again and it will be better than your first attempt
Lad who bought the Corsa came round the drive through at the Maccies I work at, so confused it wasn’t you driving it 😂
Swear I seen this on market place a couple weeks ago with suspected oil cooler cracked causing it to mix
Deffo do compression test, if one cylinder low on compression, that maybe a good telltale sign, could have possibly partially burnt a valve?
Change the coilpack aswell as a service.. also sounds abit tappy so later date timing chain with water pump etc
02 sensors thrown up due to bad spark etc causing it been lean
If you turn the astra off hold your foot on the break and accelerator peddle then turn the key till the dash lights come on the car will do its own diagnostic checks if its anything electrical fault it will give you a p00 code
Well it does on my astra vxr anyway lol
This engine has problems with the head gasket the timing chain and the hydraulic lifters but it sounds like timing chain got to much slack when reviving it up
