With all of that been said, let's get started. Dude, this is fantastic. I've made my fire tv cube into a beast by adding a USB stick via the ugreen ethernet port adapter usb. It's more faster and powerful. Internet connection is faster than before, nice one, keep up the good work.

All good info, but what about Ethernet? I hardwired mine and speeds were extremely low. Disconnected Ethernet line and used Wi-Fi speeds jumped back to normal. Does the usb hub need to be powered to run Ethernet and usb to get normal speeds?
Good tutorial, thanks. Amazon needs to update the Cube so that external drives can be attached directly - without the need for an additional cable and without formatting. I have external drives with many many movies. To connect these drives to the Fire Cube, I'd have to buy a new drive, format it for use with the Cube, then transfer the movies from the other drive. Alternatively, I could move all the movie files to my PC, but not everyone has the space to do that. It also means having to transfer the files twice - which can take a loooooooong time. This is just nuts. Users should have the ability to connect a USB drive or hub directly without formatting. The cube needs the ability to function as a media server/manager. Adding a USB 3 or USB C port would help tremendously. It would also make the Fire Cube much more attractive to those with large media libraries but small wallets.

Got fire cube 2nd gen 25 3rd party apps installed still have just over 9 GB left. Plenty of storage and all the apps I need. Handy as I think you can add a 1 terabyte passport hd to fire stick for all movie downloads

Hello I followed the video and all props match your video. When I check storage it shows as external storage. I've loaded a bunch of rooms for my emulator and it came up as low on storage. When i check my internal 16gb is full.. Thought it was supposed to go to usb? Did I do something wrong? Michael Hetcher This process is for creating more internal (ststem) storage, suitable for installing apk’s. I guess the ROM image files you downloaded are being treated as data files. If you connect an external drive in FAT32 format (like a SanDisk USB3 Ultra) to the USB or USB hub you will be able to manage where the ROM files go; use ESFile Explorer, Total Commander or X-Plore. When you move them to an external data drive your low memory issue should be solved.

I have a Toshiba Fire TV and the back of tv has usb port. Do the same steps apply on my TV as they do on the cube. I've plugged in a USB Flash Drive and started the formatting, but it just hangs up there and I never get a format complete screen. Any suggestions? By the way, your videos are great. Great work, I tried this with a 128g thumb drive and all new apk's install to usb drive...one problem when going to es explorer it shows the drive and it stuck on 0% reading the drive, using total commander it shows the usb drive but when you try to access it locks up....also tried to format a 2tb drive for internal storage and it just keeps formatting....any suggestions? I thought the other day I had see a OTG splitter cable which also had a hub. It is just me and my imagination? I was thinking if so then I would not need to buy both but just one. It sounds like you may have been saying that with dependent on which USB drive we pick, a faster drive means we will also be able to speed you the fire stick as well? Because I was wondering when adding a usb drive is not only we increase storage memory, but also processing memory and speed? Basically every aspect I am at least awaire of that a person may want to update as far as the hardware.

I'm using the app background process manager, also some of the apps are missing their icons and don't function properly like how they do on the 4k stick.
Marcus, I have the same issue. I deleted the Background app and reinstalled it, but it doesn’t work so well on the 2nd Gen Cube. I cross checked it with my 4K stick and it functions way better. The reinstall helped with the crashes and it does show the open apps; however, it doesn’t take you directly to Settings/Applications so you can seamlessly close the apps one by one as you can on the 4K stick. I literally have to memorize the open apps and physically go to Settings/Applications and close them out. I can only surmise this is a programming quirk with the application or perhaps with the 2nd Gen Cube. The 2nd Gen Cube had a lot of glitches when they 1st rolled it out. Maybe a future software update will cure this? One can only hope because the Background app is super useful in preserving limited system resources as TechDoctor has alluded to on prior videos. I also have an issue where after I shut the cube off, I wake up and the screen on the tv will be on a light blue as if it has turned itself on too. Wish i could find a way to stop this from occurring as it wastes electricity
Question, you used a hub to put the external usb drive in. Now that is seen as Fire Cube memory. What if you put another USB drive in the hub with the first one. Will it allow you to see that as regular memory so you can play movies from it?
The Cube is excellent. I like the prospect of adding storage as per your very helpful video here: I have connected the Cube directly to my router using the bundled adaptor. Apart from the Ethernet connection, this adaptor also has a micro port for an OTG cable. So I bought a Posugear OTG cable and Sandisk USB. Doesn't work. Not recognised. Any ideas?

Hi, I have a few questions. I did this same Process with the firestick 4k and my firestick 4k has not worked the same?? it pulses Hesitates and skips. So I reset my firestick 4k to Factory reset. It did not work for me.

You did not mention that you cannot install most apps that are loaded by amazon (default) to the external storage(USB). We are still waiting for the fire tv to truly extend (merge) the storage of the USB to internal where the system sees no difference between the two but instead sees it as one big drive.

I have a comment and a question. First.....If you have Fire OS 7 and storage was added via the Fire TV settings, you will not be able to explore that storage device from a file explorer like xplore or Es file explorer. That should save some people some wasted time messing with what is a perfectly working sd card that has this limitation that OS 6 does not. My question is do I need to plug in the OTG micro sd cord to power with a fire cube setup? The fire cube has it's own power source. I don't think it is a good idea to power the OTG cable as well unless it is only helping power the usb hub and sd card. What are your thoughts on this?

I have a Kingston 64gb flash 3.0 and a OTG converter 3.0. My problem is that everything on the external drive is buggy, lags and bogs. It kicks me out if I want to open cinema HD as an example, had to move it all to my internal storage and it works fine. Do you have an idea what is happening here? All these items are brand new.

I see what you are doing. I added a 128 g flash drive and formatted it to internal storage on my 4k cube. I s there any way to find out how much storage is on the usb drive. I get the usb markings on the apps. Also I just see the usb apps on only from the internal ones. In es file explorer I don't see another storage indicator along with the internal one. Should I see another device on the es file explorer?

I've run the steps on two firesticks - a 4K and the other the older style pendant. I am fine until I try to move the data using the volume ID and I get "Failure [-6]". Anyone else see that?

I have a right angle micro usb to regular usb and I formatted the the drive, it shows the jab and that I have the extra storage but it doesn’t give me the option of moving my apps over...
Bruan Preston Theoretically the largest FAT32 formatted drive would be 2TB. Some say Amazon recommended largest thumb drive is 128GB, which is what I ended up using.
Using the exact otg cable and ugreen hub as your tutorial. The only difference is my drive is SanDisk 128gb...shows drive in ES explorer and total commander but can't read drive contents, ES explores shows 0% reading drive... If you click on it, it locks up... Need real help here

I see you are using a OTG Y type cable that many people use on Firesticks. But since the Cube has a dedicated power supply. The extra Micro USB is not necessary on a Cube. c jones The set up process is different for a 4K FireStick. There’s a separate video on it. When that OTG expansion is complete you can run a U Green USB hub on it for multiple thumb drives or combinations of thumb drive and wireless dongle, etc.You should be able to connect the ethernet at the same time (I haven’t tried this part).

Anthony Sublett Sounds like your drive is in FAT32 format for data storage. You can use Remote ADB Shell to format the drive as internal (system) for installing apk’s. I recommend to follow this channel’s video on FireTVStick4K OTG expansion for the simple steps required.

The external drive might not be getting enough power from the firecube to power it on.

Hello Tech Doctor, I have the FireTV Cube 2nd Gen, OTG Cable and a USB Sandisk 128gb from your link below, but for some reason the APK aren't saving on the USB, they are saving on the Cube I have formatted the USB Flash Drive just like you have been doing on your video above, can you help me out with this one.
How did you format the USB drive? Where are you installing the apps from? Amazon app store or filelinked / downloader?
Hi, I have a few questions. I did this same Process with the firestick 4k and my firestick 4k has not worked the same?? it pulses Hesitates and skips. So I reset my firestick 4k to Factory reset. It did not work for me.

no, the USB drive is "locked" to the Amazon device where the formatting was done
Great video! Can you use this method to increase BOTH external and internal storage at the same time??? i.e. 256GB drive for external and 64GB drive for internal???
You did not mention that you cannot install most apps that are loaded by amazon (default) to the external storage(USB). We are still waiting for the fire tv to truly extend (merge) the storage of the USB to internal where the system sees no difference between the two but instead sees it as one big drive.

Hi Techdoctoruk, I have format the flash drive for 50/50 for the Fire Cube so how if an apk is store on my flash drive and I move it to the internal storage is there any way I can remove it transfer it back to the Flash Drive or do I have to uninstall the apk first then reinstall it so it will store on the flash drive? Just wantd to check, on my fire tv 2nd gen i could move many of my applications to usb. on the firetv I cante.e.g. background app and process list, cinema hd, dng bei assistnt, downloader, fire os update blocker, informe,internet speed test app,ipvanish etc. any ideas??? or do i have to load them all from screatch?
I have a comment and a question. First.....If you have Fire OS 7 and storage was added via the Fire TV settings, you will not be able to explore that storage device from a file explorer like xplore or Es file explorer. That should save some people some wasted time messing with what is a perfectly working sd card that has this limitation that OS 6 does not. My question is do I need to plug in the OTG micro sd cord to power with a fire cube setup? The fire cube has it's own power source. I don't think it is a good idea to power the OTG cable as well unless it is only helping power the usb hub and sd card. What are your thoughts on this?
Hey Doc How you doing I'm trying to increase my storage I have the fire cube 2nd generation as well but the plug I have isn't micro USB it's the same one as they have for the Amazon echo show 5 would I still be able to increase my storage using OTG cable

Kind of off the subject question. Can I plug in a NTSC formatted HD with Music and video files and use Plex to play them on Fire cube Rev2?
I have a Kingston 64gb flash 3.0 and a OTG converter 3.0. My problem is that everything on the external drive is buggy, lags and bogs. It kicks me out if I want to open cinema HD as an example, had to move it all to my internal storage and it works fine. Do you have an idea what is happening here? All these items are brand new.

I see what you are doing. I added a 128 g flash drive and formatted it to internal storage on my 4k cube. I s there any way to find out how much storage is on the usb drive. I get the usb markings on the apps. Also I just see the usb apps on only from the internal ones. In es file explorer I don't see another storage indicator along with the internal one. Should I see another device on the es file explorer?

Techdoc, I am not sure if you will get this or not. I have successfully set up my brand new Amazon Fire TV Cube and apps are moving to USB perfectly, my problem is I can't seem to move any videos onto the USB, in the same way as I used to when following the instructions from one of your previous videos, where I had to partition the USB first.
Any advice on how to move videos from Windows 10 to my new Amazon TV Cube, would be Great

Hi Graham, if you have formatted the entire drive as internal storage then you wont be able to use it on any other device

I've run the steps on two firesticks - a 4K and the other the older style pendant. I am fine until I try to move the data using the volume ID and I get "Failure [-6]". Anyone else see that?
I have all the correct the equipment. It formatted then it finished. It won't show up on the cube at all. Not as internal or external storage. Please advise if the a solution.

You can add more stuff to flash drive on the 4k max then u can on the cube
You mention using a usb hard drive on the fire cube if I plug in a thumb drive I can format see and record to it if I plug in a usb hard drive it doesn’t see it any suggestions or videos using a hard drive instead of a usb thumb drive
The hard drive require more power than what the USB port can deliver. You can try using a powered hub

Bruan Preston Theoretically the largest FAT32 formatted drive would be 2TB. Some say Amazon recommended largest thumb drive is 128GB, which is what I ended up using.
Can I use an external 2tb drive on my Fire Cube Gen2? Nothing appears on the Fire Cube. It's pre formatted to FAT32.
Followed video. tried several different ways. would not format internal.
Using the exact otg cable and ugreen hub as your tutorial. The only difference is my drive is SanDisk 128gb...shows drive in ES explorer and total commander but can't read drive contents, ES explores shows 0% reading drive... If you click on it, it locks up... Need real help here

I see you are using a OTG Y type cable that many people use on Firesticks. But since the Cube has a dedicated power supply. The extra Micro USB is not necessary on a Cube. Could I just use a adapter instead? Please look this one over and give me your advice. c jones The set up process is different for a 4K FireStick. There’s a separate video on it. When that OTG expansion is complete you can run a U Green USB hub on it for multiple thumb drives or combinations of thumb drive and wireless dongle, etc.You should be able to connect the ethernet at the same time (I haven’t tried this part).

I have a 1st Gen Fire Cube. I can format the drive and see it but it won't install the apps to the USB like it does on you're 2nd gen cube. Am I out of luck because I have a 1 gen Fire Cube???
Anthony Sublett Sounds like your drive is in FAT32 format for data storage.
You can use Remote ADB Shell to format the drive as internal (system) for installing apk’s. I recommend to follow this channel’s video on FireTVStick4K OTG expansion for the simple steps required.
