    Last September my 2017 Escape started up in the mornings rough and a warning light came on. The Escape was due for routine servicing at the dealership. They checked the light and told me it needed a new engine due to the coolant issue. It was a short block replacement and took about one month to complete due to part issues. This happened at 64k kms and was covered under the powertrain warranty.

    I hear that the 1.5L and 2.0L ecoboost engines made at the Cleveland plant were the troublesome engines with the coolant intrusion issues, but the same engines that were made in spain didn't have that issue. If that's the case than that would explain why the TSB stated some ecoboost 1.5L and 2.0L engines may have issues with coolant intrusion. I heard there is a sticker on the engine to see where your ecoboost engine was made.

    I had heard of problems with the 1.5 and my brothers 3.5 in his f150 is constantly in the shop. This is why I chose a 2020 Ecosport over the Escape. I got the non-turbo 2.0 motor so hopefully less problems. Its plenty fast enough and still tows 2k lbs just fine which I have done several times with two quads on a aluminum trailer.

    When the bad engine is replaced with solid pistons is the car worth keeping or get rid of it? 2017 Escape broke down 06/02/2022 towed to ford dealer puff of smoke came out exhaust . I had transmisson replaced 6 mo. ago 87, 000 miles has 92,000 miles now.

    My 2016 Fusion 1.5 EB at 77k had a cracked head and was leaking coolant into bank 1 on the coder. Took it to dealer and they replaced the engine. It cost me $100 deductable on the extended warranty. Glad I got that when I bought it new. Now that I look back it had a misfire code about a year before the main issue. I wonder if thats when it started to fail. Thanks for the up close video.

    I bought a used 2018 Fusion 1.5 w/15k miles on it. According to the CarFax "Short block replaced" was on there from the Ford Dealership 6 months and 40 miles before I took delivery of it. Safe to say I shouldn't have to worry about this issue moving forward? Im still a bit confused at what all the TSB details, just a new block and gaskets? What about pistons, injectors, plugs, seals, cams etc?

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn’t have to worry about the coolant intrusion anymore. Under warranty ford only lets us replace the short block with consists of block, crank, rods, pistons, and all the necessary gaskets. They make us re use the cylinder head, cams, injectors, oil pump, oil pan, and pretty much everything else. The only way they will let the head be replaced is if we can prove it’s warped or damaged.

    I have question but not about this engine. How is the 2.0L engine in Ford Edge (let say year 2018)? Does it have these kind of problems? Lot of people are saying to get 6 cylinder for Ford Edge, but I just realized that it has water pump inside the engine on timing chain and it can leak fluid inside the engine and create a lot of problems. Which one would you get, 2.0L turbo or 6 cylinder naturally aspirated?

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      3.5 all day. I love the 3.5s the only issue with them is the water pump but that usually doesn’t go out until 150k+. They last forever

      @@FlyingWrenches13 Thanks. So, would it damage the engine when it starts leaking? Essentially, how to know if it is leaking, can you see it on oil cap? Probably the coolant level will be lower, I'm guessing.

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah most of the time it leaks out of the weep hole which is outside the engine. Every now and then I see one that leaked inside the engine and contaminated the oil but even then you can usually flush the engine and not have any issues with it.

  • @felixbgc
    @felixbgc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have fixed it with a little hole on coolant cap. Coolant goes without pressure, the leaking has stopped. I use one that starts boiling at 138°C, so no problem about no pressure, no need of changing anything, just a hole. 1.5 ecoboost with 80k milles and running good.
    Editing this comment: 2 weeks ago my 1.5 ecoboost lost almost all the coolant by the coolant cap. Compression has started to pass from the cilinders to the coolant system. 126.000 km, a total hell, and what is worse here in Spain Ford doesn't want to assume nothing. I'm really disappointed with Ford, I love the Ford feeling on its cars, love Ford designs, and Ford doesn't want me, oh God!

      @@jamesmedina2062 por el diseño de cilindros flotantes, la refrigeración está separada de las cámaras de combustión por una fina pared, que entre cilindros resulta ser demasiado fina. Ford está cambiando el bloque de motor (la parte de abajo, lo que no es la culata) en coches con menos de 3 años está pagando el coste, pero en el resto pretende que el cliente asuma su fallo de motor. Realmente el resto de fabricantes debería estar agradecido con Ford, porque alguien que experimenta algo tan indecente necesitará otro coche y está claro que no va a ser Ford. Yo perderé 4000$ pero Ford va a perder 400.000$ solamente con la influencia que ya estoy teniendo en familiares, amigos, cientos de alumnos que reciben mis clases. No entiendo esta forma de proceder de Ford, era una oportunidad de quedar como una gran compañía, lo que creo que es, pero está demostrando lo contrario, no merecen los clientes que tienen.

    Seems to be a recurring theme with these small Ecoboosts. Budget turbocharged designs rushed out to keep ahead of emissions regulations. It doesn't help that they try to get these engines to temp so fast that they use complicated cooling setups. The HPFP is alright as long as they don't develop leaks that put fuel in the engine oil. Then you have all kinds of problems.
