I had a calf muscle tear-grade 2 or 3 after accelerating up the stairs to the subway. I have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow. Went to the orthopedist already. Start PT next friday. But I want to THANK YOU for this extraordinary massage video that IMMEDIATELY helped relieve the tension and even blood flow in my injured leg-around the torn muscle and above and below. I was starting to feel numb with the ace bandage on it almost 24/7 (except showering). My heel lifts have been ordered (fro Amazon about $10-wish i saw the paper towel recommendation beforehand). I will continue the massage therapy for 5 min everyday until I receive PT. Also 2 obvious (but still helpful) tips for immediate relief- 1) Do not out icepacks directly on your skin. Have a barrier. My kind husband placed it on my injury immediately for over an hour, which resulted in an ice burn/frostbite with blisters. Thought it was the calf muscle tear that was hurting so much! ...and 2)Take off the ace bandage or boot to massage directly on calf. ..
Quick ?s...Do you massage for 5 mins/day every day or gradually increase ? Is the massage motion always in the direction you described ?

I just strained my calf. I overdid it on jump roping. I saw a doctor and he suggested the same. Ice first 48 hours then massage and stretch. He actually said not to rest from exercise, just take it slow and light while focusing on the motion and avoiding calf heavy exercise. I am going to do this massage. Thank you.

Thank you so much! I ruptured my calf muscle two weeks ago running and playing with my dog in the back yard. I felt my calf "pop" and there was instant pain. I had to crawl back into the house. I did go to the hospital and then orthopedic. No surgery. For the first week, I could not put any weight on it. Then 1 week after, I am in a boot. My calf is feeling where I started stretching about 4 days ago. It has been a rough go. After seeing your video with the messaging, I started doing it. And, it was instant relief. My calf has been so tight, but after this message (just the first time), I was able to walk without the boot so much better! Thank you so very much!!!!

I know its old post, but I also had a pop on my calf and went down. Been resting for 2 days now. Can only walk on my heel that the leg that popped. Its swollen but not bleeding. Can't walk on my toes obviously. Hopefully I can also walk normally like you. Surprised you don't need surgery, they say usually do if the muscle tear popped or something.

I was feeling a twinge in the back of my knee for a week, then last night my calf went pop while climbing the stairs. It was like someone had stabbed me in the back of the leg. I was able to grab hold of the handrail and shuffle down on my bum. I've applied a pack of frozen peas, elevated my leg and wearing tights for support. I'm a little worried about the extent of damage that's been done, but hopefully this advice works!

GodzOfHeavenzz Xbox Player it healed. Took about 5 weeks. It did bleed and made my foot swollen after a couple of days after injury so it’s normal. Just rest your feet and keep it up on a pillow or something. Mine was grade 2 tear. Didn’t need surgery or anything.

Really useful video and appreciate the time you put in. Just wondering what would the best treatment be after few months. I've torn my calf muscle 2 times in soccer. First time it got healed by itself but still was a bit painful but I played anyways and I tore it again after 2 min of playing. And it's been almost a year now and I still can't run properly and can see and feel the gap in my calf. Seems there is no muscle left. It gets tensed and painful constantly even after 2 min of soft running.

Yesterday! Practicing serves, after nearly 5 minutes of hitting maybe 30 or more, I felt like I got shot in my left calf!! Could not walk in normal gait; had to walk on left heel. Very sensitive, very painful. Got a ride home, put ice on it, took some Advil, and elevated. Just saw this massage regimen and tried for 2 minutes. Never got numb but neither did it hurt. So, I'll keep this up for 2 or 3 days. May try the lift in shoe to see if it provides any relief in movement. Thanks for this.

Great video even all these years later!! I was running during tennis 4 days ago and literally felt a pop almost as if the muscle moved out of place!! I doubled over and scared my tennis partner...I couldn't walk first 2 days, only hopping and went to a doctor but they barely did anything. It's probably a tear, they said. I'm wondering if I should go again or if it will heal on its own? I can now walk with a subtle limp and trying to massage it, plus use these tips :( Thank you !

Great video the massage helped a lot. I have a calf strain and it's been 1 week. I can walk normally and it only hurts when I run (I'm a distance runner). The pain isn't great it's just kinda there and doesn't go away. I've been doing the "P.R.I.C.E." which helps a lot and a lot of stretches and lifts. Would you suggest speed walking or some jogging? Please respond

I was running in the Boston Marathon when at mile 7, I felt like someone stabbed my left calf. I finished the marathon with that pain the next 20 miles. I took a week off and then tried resuming running. Not really the smartest course of action. I am now on 2 weeks off of what I anticipate will be 4 weeks rest. I have been icing, massaging, and starting to introduce more stretches and strengthening of the area around the calf and the calf itself. I am guessing I had a grade 2 tear since I wouldn't have finished a marathon with a grade 3. I foam roll, and I use the lacrosse ball on the calf. These videos have been helpful and I am hoping the calf gets better quickly. Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful.

I am now on week 3, going to wait until next week to even think about running. I have been walking more. First 1.5 miles. All the way up to 4.5 miles walking today with no pain. I can feel the scar tissue in my calf, should I really massage that hard to have the scar tissue broken up? And I hear all kinds of things about when I can start running. Should I introduce slow jogs in to my walks or what is my next step so to speak. Thanks in advance.

This is a great video. Over a month ago I injured my calf playing basketball. It Felt just like a golf ball being thrown direcly at the center of the calf. It was far too tender to do the massage and it turned out to be a slight tear in the Plantaris Tendon. I was placed in a Half leg boot to keep me from flexing and pointing my foot. After a month, I'm out of the boot and looking forward to physical therapy. My Question: Do you think perhaps the calf strain/pull a result of the Plantaris Tendon Tear? Or is this the same injury?

Hello, thanks for the great advices.
I had a motorcycle accident 15 days ago, I had a broken leg and strain (teared muscle) in the calf muscle. The injury is due to direct compact with the car which led my leg to take a direct hit (so basically it was between the body of the motorcycle and the car when it hit me).
I have visited couple of doctors which they recommend me to rest for 14 days, and now they are asking me to train the muscle and try to walk. I am having lots of pain as I cannot move my foot or ankle completely or put it in the right angle to stand up. My question what should I do to train the muscle? also would training the muscle although there is pain will harm it? what advises can you give me since I still have inflammation and pain?
Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, I have been watching several of your videos related to calf injuries. I’m currently training for a marathon after having several months off running. I did start gradually, but after about 10 weeks of slowly building, I injured my calf muscle on one leg. I just did it this past week - was out for a short run and it was tight and I couldn’t get it to loosen up. I ended up just walking a few miles as that didn’t seem to bother it, but running did. Today, a few days later, I tried to just walk for awhile on my treadmill and it became too painful to even walk at a slower speed. Ugh! I’m really frustrated. I’m 54 years old, so I’m no spring chicken, but I’m in good health and normally have no issues doing physical activity. I’m also training for a 150 mile bike ride for MS, which is 2 weeks from yesterday. I’m wondering if cycling is going to interfere with the healing of my calf muscle? I did go on a 25 mile bike ride yesterday and that seemed fine, no pain. Also, if it huts to put weight on it on the stairs (doing the stretches), should I just wait to do those and just stick with the cross massage you showed in this video? I appreciate your advice. Thanks so much! Stephanie

I have had a lingering calf pain for about a year and a half. It is located on my outer calf, what I believe is the Gastrocnemius muscle-lateral and also in the Solace muscle. It has been a frustrating experience trying to solve this issue. I feel as though I have given the calf plenty of rest and done all the recommended home treatments. I'll test out the calf by doing some light running and eventually, sometimes within a minute, the pain comes back in the same area. I'm wondering if you might have any suggestions on what I can do to heal? I had to cancel a backpacking trip, twice.

Maybe I'll have to start doing this.I was walking one day and then the following evening I experienced this calf pain. I figured it was a pulled muscle. It did get better. But now it's back. I can walk just fine no pain run just fine no pain. Sometimes just standing still hurts or certain positions. After getting up in the morning-hurts. I take it i shouldn't run for awhile right? I do at least 20 miles a day with my job.

I am not on the slim side and I started walking about a month ago. And I started to feel this numbing, kind of tingly feeling at the top of my calf when I went to a falls and was going up steps and and also climbing over rocks while in the falls. The acute feeling went away as I rested from walking for about 2 weeks, but recently I started it up again and the feeling is back. What do you recommend?

For a few months now on and off I have been having calf pain that radiates to my knee, ankle and thigh. So bad I went to ER. Had 3 ultrasounds done on leg 3 different times. No blood clots. Each time I feel like it keeps getting worse. No injury. No surgeries. Just a constant achy pain. Any ideas or suggestions on what could be causing this?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to do it once the pain goes away. It just happened to me about four hours ago. Sigh...

+physicaltherapyvideo I did that the first day. My wife has been messaging it and it hurts but not terribly. It hasn't gotten numb yet. Does that mean shes not doing it long/hard enough? Thanks again.

Thank you for the insight. I tore/strained my calf muscle almost 3 weeks ago and it was healing nicely but recently my calf is feeling stiff and preventing typical leg motion during walking. Wondering if the stiffness is related to scar tissue build up? Thank you!

I'm a high school cross country runner and my calf has been hurting for about two weeks now. I had a few days off From running but I really don't wanna miss anymore of this season. I have about a month left of cross country and want to know if there's anything I can do for my leg so I can keep running and not miss practice? Or should I just stop running for now until my leg feels better? I really don't wanna miss anymore practice 😁😔

After I got done playing basketball today, I went to go take my shoes off and all of a sudden l felt something like a leg cramp or spasm, and after that faded, I could barely walk, and I had to limp. My calf is in pain when I'm walking and while sitting or lying down, and my question is: do I have a calf strain and if so, how bad. Would I need to go to the doctor for it? Could I treat it myself? My calf feels a little tender so I don't think I should massage it yet. Also I want to see if it swells or not and try to prevent it.
