The '87 Transformers are one of the first lines of toys I remember eagerly anticipating (the other was MOTU's Evil Horde). To this day that early advert, with Magnus and Rodimus discussing the characters, still gives me tingles. This is truly the video this line deserved, good brother - epic and excellent!
Brings me back to when I was collecting Autobots and my best friend was collecting Deceptions. '87-'88 was kind of the final years of all that. Playtime was epic though!
Those were the days! Loved getting together with friends and being able to play with other toys from the line that I didn't have, as well as share the ones I had that they didn't.
Neat! My friend Brian collected the Gobots, and I had Transformers (his parents didn't have a lot of money). We used to get together and pretend that Leader-1 had to call his friends the Autobots for help (or vice versa). Or Cy-Kill had to call Soundwave (Soundwave was the leader of my Decepticon toys-I wasn't allowed to play with guns, so I didn't have Megatron, Galavatron, or Shockwave)
Outstanding work Michael! I loved the Stinger. Wow what a crazy year. Glad to see Rippersnapper have the last word: he was my only Decepticon! He had to fight Powermaster Optimus, Ultra Magnus, and Sludge on his own. He didn't do very well.
Michael, I had no idea you liked Headmasters, they're my favourite and I thought I was the only one. When I was in school the other kids started making fun of me for still liking Transformers, they were more mature because they watched Knight Rider and the A Team, then a friend lent me the TF comics Headmasters mini-series and I rediscovered my love of Transformers. When I read those comics, I fell in love with Transformers and comics again, but it also put me on a path to appreciating sci-fi and I've never looked back. Nerdmaste.
The Battle Beasts/Beastformers were such a cool little bonus, and they're even featured in an episode of the Japanese show. That's especially nice since they never got an animated series of their own in North America.
I still have my original Scorponok from 1987! I still have the box and all packaging too! I knew from the minute I got it, that he was the crown jewel of my collection. I transformed him over and over, but always with the utmost care. He is still in great shape today. I love that toy!
I managed to collect enough money to get a Fortress Maximus at the nearest Toys R Us in Spring 1988. It is a fantastic toy, and I know where it is in my house; it's just buried where it would take a few days effort to get to.

My favorite year of the G1 toy line!! The commercial ads had awesome animation!! Anime standards!! Loved the new futurist box design too!! Fort Max is so awesome!! Not even his new Titans Return self could compare to him!! The targetmaster commercial and the Sixshot commerical are my all-time favorites!! Great video!! Can't wait for the 88 series!!
This video reminded me of two nostalgic elements of The Transformers and GI Joe, the cartoon announcers before and after the commercials. Both voices were very distinctive.
Fort Max was awesome. He wasn’t available in the UK market, but in ‘88 my dad got a new job in the US. We made the move that year and that Christmas I got the best surprise ever. It was a bit hard for 8 year old me to move it around. But it was very sturdy due to his size, I still have it and it’s in pretty good condition after all these years.
The Terrorcons have to have some of the most incredible names ever included in Transformers fiction. Both Cutthroat and fuckin' _Sinnertwin?_ He's up there with greats like Shreddicus Maximus, Slayride, Lord Doomitron, Twinferno, Ruination, and Lord Imperious Delirious. The '87 cast may not have had the staying power of their earlier counterparts, but thanks to more recent writers, characters like Hardhead, Brainstorm, Misfire, Fort Max, Scorponok, and _especially_ Chromedome have still managed to catch some of the limelight in later TF fiction. Triggerhappy... got killed by Arcee. But hey, he got an absolutely amazing figure in Titans Return, which was one big, glorious love-letter to this era of Transformers, and definitely the highlight of that part of Generations, so he's not completely screwed.
Wow, this was a heavy release year. In the UK the comic was still going strong, and most of these were heavily promoted (though I don't remember some of them...) I think maybe there was one more great year before things started slipping...
The Headmaster gimmick was the second best one in Transformers history (next to combiners, of course)! There should be more Headmasters made in the future (like the Titans Return line)!
Thanks so much! I've been waiting for this for a long time. The Terrorcons were the closest I ever got to having a Combiner team, but I couldn't find Rippersnapper anywhere in '87. Still, Hun-Grrr is the only bot which I still have today. Somehow the brute survived not only my childhood, but my three boys' as well!
i'm only seeing this now, but i just want to say i love your work i wasn't born in the 80s or 90s, but all this retro stuff, especially older transformers, is just so cool to me keep up the great work, and i look forward to seeing what else you have planned!
The throttlebots were awesome fun! The technobots were the first full set of combiners that i was able to collect back in the day. Great video as always and lots of fun to watch. Awesome work Michael thank you for sharing :)
As someone who read the comics but only sporadically watched the cartoon, I feel like I had a very different experience of Transformers than a lot of people. The Headmasters and Targetmasters were treated a lot better in the comics - both the Transformers themselves and their Nebulan partners. Also - no Daniel in the comics at all, which was a huge bonus.
Agreed. I wasn't able to get through the Japanese Headmasters show some years back partly due to Daniel and Wheelie, but they're easier to ignore now and I'm enjoying it a lot more this try.

1987 was a good year for transformers but...when 88 rolled around and I saw power master Optimus prime on the toy shelve for the first time I lost my little mind. I had to have him. But back in those days $25 was a lot of money for my parents to spend on a kid for a toy. Even know my dad was buying the most expensive transformers for himself lol. I wasnt able to get my own power master prime until years later. Thank God for ebay
This is around the time I stopped collecting the toys. (I was nearing my teens and thought I was too old for it-foolish kid that I was) I still read the comics (the US and UK ones) so I was still (and still am) fully invested in the characters

Shame that Hasbro did not import the Japanese series'. They would've really helped the TF brand in that deadspace after 1987 with the cartoon over. Back then having such a toyline but with no new animated adventures to spark interest in and flesh out all these new characters is like a PB&J but with no J. Half the fun of Transformers was watching the cartoon and seeing your favorite robots get the spotlight.
Loved the mentions of the Japanese season, hopefully this means that when we get to 88 there will be shoutouts to Master Force. Fingers crossed that there will be an episode dedicated to the bots of Victory.
I was lucky to have the best Mom in the world and in 1987 at only 4 years old had Fortress Maximus and I had all 4 head masters. I wish now I would of just kept all my transformers in the boxes never opened I had 4 optimus prime alone but I destroyed all the toys as a young kid smashing them together and what not. If i only new what they would be worth now.
Great video Michael! I loved punch/counter punch on the American side and Raiden on the Headmasters side! I only wish our season 4 was the headmasters from Japan with a good English dub. Amazing though how the commercials for the toys had amazing animation! Sad that we lost out on a real season 4!

Man, I can sympathise I was told to get rid of so much of my old stuff at the time, if I'd kept it then and sold it in the last four years, I could've probably bought a brand-new car with the cash.
Poor Optimus prime would be resurrected again from getting infected by Galvatron's cells. Ended up Fighting Hot Rod. I am not a fan of Kiss players but it's still G-1 canon. But I will say I'm still trying to get my hands on both Optimus and Convoy Dodge Ram figures. They are just so cool
I had Point Blank, and Peace Maker. Fort Max was like my holy grail of Transformer toys I wanted that toy so bad, but there was no way my parents were spending 100 dollars on that toy for me.
That's how it was for most. So nice that Takara did an encore reissue of him a few years back for not too much. Then he went on clearance at a lot of places so it wasn't that much more than the '87 price.
I prefer the Japanese take on the head master with the headmasters being the characters themselves and the bodies being just a vessel for them to pilot.
I'm watching it now and prefer it over Rebirth. It feels more like the tone of the '86 movie. A bit more serious but not overly dark and depressing with "everybody's Batman" like the recent Netflix show.

Well now I know why this took a while to make, because 87 was a huge year. Personally my favorites were always the terrorcons, though the prime and PotP releases were a lot better than the originals.

1987 was the last great year for G1 Transformers. Loved the Headmasters and Targetmasters lines. Fortress Maximus remained my dream toy for decades until I was able to purchase him via eBay two years ago. By this year, I was entering my first year of junior high school (7th grade), transferred to a new school, and was starting to develop a love (and addiction) to video games, especially the NES. I purchased three toys in the 1988 line (Powermaster Optimus Prime, headmaster Siren; Targetmaster Scoop) but by then the Toys were getting really cheaply designed, made of plastic (instead of metal, rubber wheels) and the toy manufacturing shifted to Macao, Hong Kong, and Taiwan instead of Japan. Same went for the GI Joe line. The release of the film really jumped the shark with the release of some awful Joes such as Chuckles and the Cobra-la figures. I just bought Destro and his destroyer vehicle and said Sayanora to the line.
i was 12 when the transformers came out in 1984. my first transformer was brawn. my mom bought me scorponok on my birthday. if i remember right my mom paid $50 for scorponok she left the sticker on the box. back then $50 was a lot of money. the only transfoemers i have left is goldbug & pretender bumblebee. i still have all of my transformer comic book's

Well don’t forget anime like the Headmasters from Japan is a way different genre. It’s more mature. For example, in Transformers Armada, Smokescreen gets shot to near death by Megatron with the Requiem Blaster, Optimus deflects the blast of the Hydra Cannon and gets destroyed and Starscream gets disintegrated by Unicron. Same with Beast Wars, as a matter of fact, despite it not being anime but CGI, with casualties like Dinobot, Scorponok, Terrorsaur, Tigatron, Airazor etc.

Thanks! If you've never seen the Japanese Headmasters show, I highly recommend it. I'm giving it my first proper watch-through and it blows Rebirth away. Best of all, lots of continuity from episode to episode like a modern series.
I loved the series as a kid and still do now still collect them have most of my originals too my whole attic is filled with them after my display case became too full but now there putting to many different series out at once so I'm picking and choosing scalpers are not helping anything ether. I remember on Black Friday calling Toys r us to see if they had the Fall of Cybertron Metroplex they said they had five me and my brother jumped in the car went up they said they had two left after and hour of them Looking for a huge box sitting in the back somewhere they decided to give up gave me a giftcard than they shutdown soon after. I could tell they just did not want to look cause it was a inconvenience well the 3 off the shelf where bought so where not gonna look in the back I even asked hey its 2 ft tall showed them the pic they where suppose to put one back when i called and even had a note form the guy i talked to saying they did luckily i finally got one for more than I woulda liked to pay . An i coulda seen if they where busy but they really where not even to know most people shopped online.
Japanese Headmasters series (which was ported to Italy as well) is probably the one I liked the most. The original intro and ending songs were sung by Hironobu Kageyama, the same one as DragonBall Z
I’ve noticed that there’s no true scale version of Fortress Maximus. Or for any other I see. Time to fix that. Like the robot version, it’s just not big enough as compared to the transformers on the ground when he fights old Scorpinok
I mainly had the mini bots and a few figures. Transformers were pretty expensive. Imagine collecting them all. Even one year is a full collection. Mind you in my part of the world a lot of these we probably never saw in the stores.
Yeah I remember thinking how much more an Autobot car was compared to a GI Joe figure. You could get a small squad of Joes instead of a single mid-sized Autobot or Decepticon.
Finally its here! But I only have one request, 1:chiffjumper is not chase 2:brawl is not rollbar 3:gears is not searchlight 4:huffer is not wideload, and finally windcharger.
Great video as always brother and for some reason we did not latch onto this iterations of the transformers as much as the original g1's; must have been due to nintendo taking over and then subsequently ninja turtles

This line of Transformers offered so many cool characters. I really enjoyed the variety of gimmicks and incorporation of "Battle Beasts".

Only target masters I ever had was the autobot double target masters. My favorite being Quick Mix

Fort Max’s ship mode honestly makes me think of Pegasus Class carriers like White Base, Grey Phantom, or Albion form Mobile Suit Gundam.
Scorponok was my last Transformer in 1987.I was told I was too old to play with toys and then told to give Scorponok to my little nephew.

Poor Optimus prime would be resurrected again from getting infected by Galvatron's cells. Ended up Fighting Hot Rod. I am not a fan of Kiss players but it's still G-1 canon. But I will say I'm still trying to get my hands on both Optimus and Convoy Dodge Ram figures. They are just so cool
I had Point Blank, and Peace Maker. Fort Max was like my holy grail of Transformer toys I wanted that toy so bad, but there was no way my parents were spending 100 dollars on that toy for me.
That's how it was for most. So nice that Takara did an encore reissue of him a few years back for not too much. Then he went on clearance at a lot of places so it wasn't that much more than the '87 price.

I prefer the Japanese take on the head master with the headmasters being the characters themselves and the bodies being just a vessel for them to pilot.
I'm watching it now and prefer it over Rebirth. It feels more like the tone of the '86 movie. A bit more serious but not overly dark and depressing with "everybody's Batman" like the recent Netflix show.
@@MichaelMercy Side note but I have a few headmaster titans return figures and the war for cybertron snap dragon and apeface and I pretend the head masters are apeface and snap dragon.
Well now I know why this took a while to make, because 87 was a huge year. Personally my favorites were always the terrorcons, though the prime and PotP releases were a lot better than the originals.

Unfortunately, Britain never got the memo, and in usual British style, refuses to pronounce the foreign word the way it's actually supposed to be pronounced. 😉

1987 was the last great year for G1 Transformers. Loved the Headmasters and Targetmasters lines. Fortress Maximus remained my dream toy for decades until I was able to purchase him via eBay two years ago. By this year, I was entering my first year of junior high school (7th grade), transferred to a new school, and was starting to develop a love (and addiction) to video games, especially the NES. I purchased three toys in the 1988 line (Powermaster Optimus Prime, headmaster Siren; Targetmaster Scoop) but by then the Toys were getting really cheaply designed, made of plastic (instead of metal, rubber wheels) and the toy manufacturing shifted to Macao, Hong Kong, and Taiwan instead of Japan.
Same went for the GI Joe line. The release of the film really jumped the shark with the release of some awful Joes such as Chuckles and the Cobra-la figures. I just bought Destro and his destroyer vehicle and said Sayanora to the line.
i was 12 when the transformers came out in 1984. my first transformer was brawn. my mom bought me scorponok on my birthday. if i remember right my mom paid $50 for scorponok she left the sticker on the box. back then $50 was a lot of money. the only transfoemers i have left is goldbug & pretender bumblebee. i still have all of my transformer comic book's

Well don’t forget anime like the Headmasters from Japan is a way different genre. It’s more mature. For example, in Transformers Armada, Smokescreen gets shot to near death by Megatron with the Requiem Blaster, Optimus deflects the blast of the Hydra Cannon and gets destroyed and Starscream gets disintegrated by Unicron. Same with Beast Wars, as a matter of fact, despite it not being anime but CGI, with casualties like Dinobot, Scorponok, Terrorsaur, Tigatron, Airazor etc.

Thanks! If you've never seen the Japanese Headmasters show, I highly recommend it. I'm giving it my first proper watch-through and it blows Rebirth away. Best of all, lots of continuity from episode to episode like a modern series.

I loved the series as a kid and still do now still collect them have most of my originals too my whole attic is filled with them after my display case became too full but now there putting to many different series out at once so I'm picking and choosing scalpers are not helping anything ether. I remember on Black Friday calling Toys r us to see if they had the Fall of Cybertron Metroplex they said they had five me and my brother jumped in the car went up they said they had two left after and hour of them Looking for a huge box sitting in the back somewhere they decided to give up gave me a giftcard than they shutdown soon after. I could tell they just did not want to look cause it was a inconvenience well the 3 off the shelf where bought so where not gonna look in the back I even asked hey its 2 ft tall showed them the pic they where suppose to put one back when i called and even had a note form the guy i talked to saying they did luckily i finally got one for more than I woulda liked to pay . An i coulda seen if they where busy but they really where not even to know most people shopped online.
Now after finished watching Season 3, i will continue watching the Japanese Headmasters. Thats my canon :D

Japanese Headmasters series (which was ported to Italy as well) is probably the one I liked the most. The original intro and ending songs were sung by Hironobu Kageyama, the same one as DragonBall Z

I’ve noticed that there’s no true scale version of Fortress Maximus. Or for any other I see. Time to fix that. Like the robot version, it’s just not big enough as compared to the transformers on the ground when he fights old Scorpinok

I mainly had the mini bots and a few figures. Transformers were pretty expensive. Imagine collecting them all. Even one year is a full collection.
Mind you in my part of the world a lot of these we probably never saw in the stores.
Yeah I remember thinking how much more an Autobot car was compared to a GI Joe figure. You could get a small squad of Joes instead of a single mid-sized Autobot or Decepticon.
