    I have been suggesting this color coding for several years. It would be so beneficial especially when there are so many cousins married to a cousin in the earlier years and when there are multiple marriages with children it would be much easier to see to see colored lines connecting to the right parents.

      We’ve started using colored emojis in the suffix field of a name, like colored ❤️ ‘s to color a line. I suspect color coding will eventually come. Thanks for the comment.

    I use the DNA Connection along with DNA Direct Ancestor for multiple DN match connections. I also add the Grandparent line it is connected to with my custom tag.

    I still like using DNA Common Ancestor. It allows me to look at that person and then see how many children I have found DNA matches down through. It is not perfect but it works for me. I have also added DNA match to XXX for each of my DNA kits as custom tags.

    A little bit late to the game, but I've been using the military tags but also custom tags for second or third or fourth cousins as well as immigrant ancestor and slave holding ancestry. It helps when I try to make a list of people to be able to pull everyone together

    Thank you for this video. I enabled the tree tags the other day and immediately drew a blank on how to use them. I should have explored it a little more.
    I'm a new subscriber. I watched your Thru-Lines video and thought it was the best one out of all the ones that I watched. You are Goldilocks. One video was too simple; one video was too in-depth; you were just right! Will be watching your other videos soon.

    I put blue hearts for paternal grand males and blue diamonds for paternal females. Then, I placed a "1" after the heart to indicate the first one who came to the US. The son of this one is #2, etc. My ancestors used the same names over & over so this helps me spot them at a glance.

      My solution to so many "same names" is to put the birth year into every person's name as a middle name. This makes it very easy to distinguish them in the index. So far I have not run into any problems with this work-around. I would welcome comments both pro and con to this technique.

    • @kaybobbitt7787
      @kaybobbitt7787 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@priscillaware4749 you might want to consider putting the dates as a suffix rather than a middle name so it doesn't affect your searches.

      @@kaybobbitt7787 - So far it hasn't interferred with my searches but you make a good point. I need to think on this. Thanks so much for your reply.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ancestry advises against it because it messes with the search functions. You may be missing hints and records in searches as a result. Same goes for putting nicknames in quotes. Like Susan “Susie” Smith.

    The DNA tags... I mark the actual DNA matches with "DNA Match", the line going up to our common ancestor(s), I mark each person on that train as "DNA Connection", then at our common ancestor, I mark as "DNA Common Ancestor". Sometimes the common ancestor for one match is just a connection on the way to a common ancestor for another match. That individual has both tags attached to them. This works for me.
    The main issue we have is with the adoption tags. Currently, we have my adopted great-grandfather's biological parents as the primary parents in our tree, so he's tagged with "Adopted Out of This Family". However, sometimes we have his adoptive parents as the "preferred" parents... and it seems annoying to have to change the tag to "Adopted Into This Family" every time we do this.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. I’ve not even bothered using the adoptive tags much. I think it’s personal preference for everyone. I think it means something to one person and probably means something else to another. That can cause a problem when you’ve got a public tree.

  • @learningcurvenz

    In my Legacy family tree, I used a series of Asterisk in to mark DNA connections. 3x *** for the actual match, 2x ** for the MRCA and 1x * to indicate the passage from one to the other.

    Color coding would be amazing!! I use the tags a lot.
    Some of my custom tags are: 100 years old, Twins, and Not Related are the ones I use the most.

    I love the tags, they have been so helpful to me. One thing though, I have not to date, seen the tags when viewing other public trees associated with a DNA match. Are the tags public for everyone to see on your public tree?

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Humm. I hadn’t noticed either. I suspect it’s a personal setting. I’ll do some digging.

    I am a collaborator/manager on my parents and a few of my cousins trees. I’m able to switch between viewing my dna matches or all of theirs and now in July of 2024 with Pro Tools, I’ve been making great progress. But sometimes I find dna matches that my parents and their first cousins share that I might not. But I’ve added those matches to various floating trees or to my main tree but I’d like to create a custom tag that says DNA match to dad or DNA match to cousin A for example to show myself that at least some of the people in my tree are DNA matches to one of my parents and at least one of their cousins (but not to me). I’d prefer if they were visible in my tree just like the tree hint leaf symbol or the symbol that shows up when I “connect” one of my dna matches to my tree. I’d then like to be able to filter my tree by those custom tags. So now in 2024, is that possible? Have they improved custom tree tags? Thanks for any info on my rather complicated question

      Nothing is changed. You could use emojis in the suffix of a name that would show in the tree view if the name is not too long.
