    I love what you said about all of it. When I was new and didn't know better, I accepted hints and allowed certain things to be added to my tree. Now that I know better, I've been cleaning up MY tree. I also love your simple explanation of using tree tags. I haven't been using them, but I'm going to start now. What a great way to help me as I am going back to the beginning and verifying all of my people and their information! Thanks!

    I'm definitely using the tree tags and they have been immensely helpful. That said, I don't mind the pictures so much, they never really bothered me, if I don't want to use someone else's picture, I just ignore the hint. The tree I work on on Ancestry is actually on my father's account, and he is an active genealogist as well. He prefers to put the ship image on all the immigrants, and *shrug* I'm not too bothered. Now, the one profile image that I definitely put on ancestors' profiles is a "slave holder" image. I also created a custom tag to label those of our ancestors who had owned other people. I don't want to get rid of the image even though I have the custom tag, primarily because I feel that the profile image is a "scarlet letter" of sorts. I just feel that, regardless of whether said person was otherwise a "good" person or whatever good they had accomplished, if they felt it was morally right to own other individuals, well, I think that choice should define them. And as such, any person I find in our tree who has a record of owning other people (whether it was 1 person or 50), they get a scarlet letter profile picture. *shrugs* Not everyone will agree with me there, which I'm fine with... but like I said, if I don't want to use someone's picture in my tree, I just ignore the hint.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ignoring the hint is the typical response, which I do mostly. I have a suggestion in video three that would make things better (if Ancestry implements it).
      As for the Scarlett Letter thing, I can understand to an extent, but I keep then again, I struggle with it as well. I'm not one to whitewash history, but I want the good and the bad to be objectively recorded and then let us learn from the past. Does that make sense?

    • @shamusosullivan5650
      @shamusosullivan5650 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morality is subjective. So the scarlet letter is a sign of your morality and punishment. Those people are gone. You’re only punishing the descendants that might not have any idea and now open them up for public shame and guilt generations later. The information should be included just like any other objective information in the tree. But choosing public punishment only effects those families afterwards.
      Would you use a pic of a child rapist or pedophile for people hundreds of years ago that married at ages that are now considered children?
      A pic of a murderer if the person was convicted but the circumstances aren’t fully known?
      Or how about that uncle or priest or youth pastor that was a kid toucher. Is that their profile pic? Who decides? The moral? Then which set of morals are to be used, and from what era?
      Seems your morality is being used that might impact the self worth and general well being of hundreds so why is that morally ok?
      If the point is to share objective facts in these trees (which is kind of the argument in the video) to better help the ancestry community and the algorithm, then maybe punishment should be reserved for Private trees or your own tree on the computer.
      Hopefully a hundred years from now someone won’t label you the worst thing you’ve done (or done without context) and that’s how all your descendants will have to know you.

    YES!!!! Standing ovation for Devon. The same goes for profiles on WikiTree and FamilySearch. Inserting non-info info profiles messes with each the program's abilities to provide automatic search help.
    Hoping these two primary world tree platforms I am using most for my genealogy work also come up with similar features on their own platforms.

    Thanks, all this time and I didn’t know you could filter the Tags.
    But trying to get a global tree view of a mess of a couple generations that are jumbled, sometimes we need a quick visual of who is who. Especially when generations intermarry with same 2-3 families and use the same 2-4 names!
    Maybe if there was a way to choose to populate profile pics that only the owner can see?

    You can't print the tree tags out, but you can do a screen capture if you are on your computer. By putting a box around the just the portion you want to capture and save it.

    I use tree tags and I do like them. They are time consuming but not AS much as the new feature Ancestry put into effect on the reason why you ignored/accepted/undecided a hint. I find that annoying :-( I put pictures on direct ancestors for my own benefit and it doesn't bother me when other people have pictures. I wish I had real photo's of the ancestors, instead of pictures, but I don't have them. Thanks for the information, Devon, on the filters!

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for chiming in the community. The Tags are less annoying than the reasons, but I like those too. It is so hard to implement new changes on large trees.

  • @staceycoates1418

    I like them but the main reason why I have not spent much time working with them is that they are so time consuming. And one thing that I hope that they will add that is similar to tree tags, but would need to be private, is a way to link DNA matches to my tree. Many of my matches are already in my tree either because of research or because of close relations.

      Stacey, I hear you on the time-consuming nature of My Tree Tags. That's one reason why I haven't invested in them. I need external motivation, like a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card or a Fold3 subscription or...

    I like tree tags. Do you know if there is a limit to the number of Custom tags you can make? Using tags to denote matches from each database I'm with, also use MRCA 1, 2, 3, etc to denote most recent common ancestor pairs with couple names in comments. Also, do you know if there is a way to move around your custom tree tags into the order of your choosing? Thanks for the video!

    Because of your video I was able to get started with tree tags and I love it. Do you know if they will be able to,work on the iOS app soon? That is what I use most all,of the time and have to go to the web version to use tags.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a FABULOUS question. Now that the tags are out of Beta on the website, I would guess that the iOS will soon follow.

    I thought it would make sense to add the surnames of each 5x great-grandparent...more names than available tags. Scrapped that idea.... now I have tags such as East India Co, diplomat, lighthouse keeper, politician. It would be nice if you could print the lists and export the tags. I think if Ancestry wants the tags feature to really work they need to be more functional.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you scrapped the surnames since that is already a field in the tree. I do like the lighthouse keeper, politician, and diplomat labels. Do you have a lot of them? I have farmers and day laborers.

    The tree I worked with had three people in it. The problems I ran into was paying for a subscription and trying to contact people and only getting about 10% of them replying back. The tools do not work so I believe they must have some sort of cut off. Also the cousin match doesn't work and viewing unlinked trees on matches does not work. Having a lot of tools that do not work is kind of pointless.
    My only hope is a close relative just happens to test with Ancestry. Testing with Ancestry actually did nothing to advance our search, 487 matches, the closer ones do not reply to messages.
    My hope is they will try to follow a model a little more like 23andme. All cousins are matched against each other. You can see X matches and Haplogroups. Even if Ancestry had a one time fee to download how your cousins match to each other would be fine. Sorry for the rambling. Ancestry could be so much better if they made some adjustments for adoptees.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Building a tree for adoptees is challenging. Andy made a video about why people don't respond to others trying about their genealogy (and DNA). studio.th-cam.com/users/video2XIJ6P4_GB8/edit
      Your only hope is not that a relative just happens to test with Ancestry. You should have your DNA in as many databases as possible. Check out Andy's video about transferring your DNA to other testing company websites. studio.th-cam.com/users/videoXZfF1juyHbI/edit It's not entirely free, but significantly reduces your cost of testing with each company.
      You'll also want to check out the video about how to research when you are adopted:
      studio.th-cam.com/users/videoKcsQHKLSjFQ/edit
      That's enough to get you started. Don't give up. Just keep trying, learning, and digging.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Pedigree chart - the chart that starts with a person, and then shows their parents, the parents of their parents, and so forth. Descendancy starts with an ancestor, shows their children, the children of their children, and the children of their children, and so forth. One starts from present and works to the past (pedigree). One works from the past and comes forward (descendency).

    Devon Noel, i have question off topic: LivingDNA is showing roots for 0 -> 2000 years
    It is similar to 23AndMe, but 23AndMe is showing 0->1000 years
    in adition LivingDNA also show how for the the haplogroup changed.. the showing a haplogroup tree
    So why people using 23AndMe ? And why should any choose 23AndMe ?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since it's off topic, I'll get Andy to answer it.
      The reason I'm not a fan of LivingDNA is that it hasn't improved, to my knowledge, it's non-British reference population. I show no Germanic ancestry and that's not possible given my close ancestors being of German descent. So, the 1,000 years ago doesn't matter to me if they can't get that close relationship right.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      23andMe has a larger database. 23andMe provides match list. 23andMe has tools to help with genealolgy. 23andMe is now linked with FamilySearch. Everything that you wrote as an advantage for LivingDNA is publically available information that can be found on other websites.

    • @askingyou4life
      @askingyou4life 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FamilyHistoryFanatics Hoi, but why 23andme is showing 1000 year back and why LivingDNA is showing 2000 years back? i mean science is used similar, knowledge is same. same machines they use.
