I have the same problem with ThruLines, as a common ancestor I have on my tree comes up dotted because someone else’s tree has them, but with a different spelling. When you buy a DNA test, and your matches have a Public member tree linked to their DNA, it would be nice if Ancestry included the public tree, to the 7 generations we can use, for our DNA. Having matches with no tree is not very helpful. I can understand the Private Trees being behind the pay wall but the public linked trees should be included, IMO. Most matches are no longer on ancestry because they got frustrated, so you cannot contact them to share their trees.

    You don't have to use an external website for emoji's - if you right click on the suffix field it should give you the option to add Emoji and Symbols.
    The only major problem is if you use the 'quick' edit function the emoji disappears and you have to re-enter it - it would be good if Ancestry would take this feedback on board and change that. :-)

    I noticed she mentioned that putting anything in the suffix field does not affect anything however i use the field extensively when using my research code system and it seems that it for some reason affects the information when imported into rootsmagic or family tree maker. It seems to want to put all the information into the name field and completely messes up the name because it puts all the information in the suffix field at the beginning of the name. Not sure if this is an issue with the software or the fact that i use / to separate the various codes i use to track certain people.

    I am seeing a number of Half relationships (one parent only) on both types of boxes (solid and dashed). What do you do with that? I have not been finding why that is in most cases. Many times my tree does not have a 1/2 relationship but the solid box has that relationship. Thanks

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd dig a little deeper into each relationship individually. The solid lined boxes are your own tree, the dashed are those of others. Go look at the Thruline matches and see why they're showing as half relations. Again dashed boxes are basically hints from other trees. Also look at the cM in common if you can figure that out. Using a cM chart will help identify the possible relationships. I hope that helps. It's kind of hard to give solid advice in a thread here.

    • @cooperjdcox49
      @cooperjdcox49 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Genealogy TV Looking deeper my tree does not show a half relationship but ThruLines has it changed to 1/2 for my tree even though when I go to the profile the relationship is full. Also I do not see a chart for half 4th or distant cousin.

    • @cooperjdcox49
      @cooperjdcox49 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should say ThruLines has my direct relative as 1/2 in the solid box as well as the matches dashed box

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll answer both Q's here. Two things... one, I like to use Dr. Blaine Bettinger's "Shared cM Project" charts because they have more detail. Go here and scroll down to see them. thegeneticgenealogist.com/2017/08/26/august-2017-update-to-the-shared-cm-project/ There you'll find all the possible cM ranges so you can compare the cM to your cousin match. I would not focus so much on the Thrulines showing a half relationship (as suggestions) as I would to determine the cM distance and then investigate on your own all of the possibilities based on the cM. You'll likely see several possible relationships. Work on just one ancestor at a time or it will drive you nuts.
      Second, I should clarify... when I said dig deeper, I meant go look at those trees of the other Ancestry members that are showing up in your ThruLines and dig into their trees and find their evidence and resources that show their connections between your ancestors Then evaluate each piece of their evidence for the ancestors you're interested in to determine if in fact what they have looks accurate. Then compare all the evidence (this is called correlation of evidence) and line up the facts within, resolve the conflicts and come to your own conclusions for each ancestor. This is how the pros do it.
      Do this with all trees that are showing up in your ThruLines. Then correlate all the evidence from the various sources. I would guess that most comes from just one or two actual sources and the rest were people copying from the original source.
      Just like any hint, ThruLines is another form of evidence that needs to be evaluated deeply for it's merits. Remember that ThruLines is just an algorithm doing its best to line things up for you. It's up to you to prove whether it is right or not.
      Once you prove the facts, add them to your own tree to help the algorithm learn the new facts. You might consider sharing your findings with the other tree members showing up in your ThruLines, but let them decide if they want to modify their own tree. You can also reach out to those other tree owners to ask them where they got their evidence, but a lot of times you can figure it out on your own.
      I hope that helped clarify my comments.

    • @MrDannyDetail
      @MrDannyDetail 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I know what you mean Cooper. There are sometimes cases where you don't say in your tree that the relationship is a half relationship, and neither does your match say that in their tree (and/or the other tree(s) used to connect you to your match), but nonetheless Thrulines shows it as a half relationship. What I think is happening here is that, say you are only matching for a great-grandfather, and not for the great-grandmother who was married to that great-grandfather. That would mean that for that specific person, the great-grandmother who's Thruline you and your match are not being shown under, you and your match may have subtly different information for them in your trees. So it might perhaps be a slight difference in name e.g. I have a 2xgreat-grandmother that was usually Mary Jane, but occasionally shows up in records as Mary Ann, so if I have weighed up all the evidence and put her in my tree as Mary Jane, but my match had made a different conclusion (perhaps they had only found one census that happened to call her Mary Ann, whereas I have as complete a record trail as is possible) then the ThruLines algorithm might think that Mary Jane and Mary Ann are two different wives of our mutual 2xgreat-grandfather, and that therefore our link is a half relationship rather than a full one. Variance in ages for that 2xgreat-grandmother can also cause the system to not realise they are one and the same woman, and create a half relationship in Thruline, for example if the person's estimated birth year fluctuates in different censuses and we each have made a different conclusion about the person's actual birth year. It's possible that geographic differences might also cause the problem (I have several families that lived in places that were on the borders of two counties and belonged to each county at different times. If I choose to standardise by saying that that place was always in one of the counties (or that all locations will be recorded in the county they were in on a fixed date in the past), and my match has chosen to standardise by saying it was always in the other county (or perhaps they are always using what county a place is in as of today) then we mismatch on county whilst matching for the actual location, and Thrulines may not realise it is the same person and thus claim a half relationship.

    thrulines still create orphans and duplicates and does not always include both parents, especially when using the ADDON feature. thrulines also likes to post 150 year-old dead people as private, generating a roadblock. Searches will usually find another tree with the person not marked private. There is no excuse for marking dead people as private and causing a problem for anyone working with that person and why does thrulines so consistently works to find private persons to post when public persons exist?

    Speaking of breaking through brick walls and hypothesis, I wish there was a way to add slaves to the trees. I know this does not make a lot of sense to some, but there are a lot of difficulties in African Americans tracing their roots and maybe helpful. Also, there are many people who passed as white that perhaps should be in trees that we are not aware of. I have both black and white DNA matches, but no interracial marriages. I have many ancestors from Hanover, VA where slavery was common. I also have ancestors from Hawkins county, TN where melungeon ancestry was common. any suggestions from anyone on this topic?

Remember that ThruLines (the dashed boxes) is using other peoples trees in combination with their DNA match to you. So if their trees (or yours) have not labeled the non-bio parents as such, then I can see how the algorithm would line it up that way.

      Good question. Keep in mind that some of these people may not be alive anymore... or they don't have notifications turned on and don't know that you've left them a message until they login again. In some cases, people take DNA tests just to see the ethnicity estimates and have no interest in doing family history and thus they're doing it for the novelty of it. In other cases, people are fearful of communicating with strangers. There is a host of reasons, so please be patient and understanding of their privacy or concerns, whatever they may be. We never know what another is going through. Sometimes it's a sensitive issue that people need to come to terms with.

      There are probably a lot of reasons people choose to make their trees private. I choose to make my main tree public allowing other folks to benefit from my research. I have however used a private tree in order to test an hypothetical family tree I have been pursuing. I don't want to put hypothetical information in a public tree that someone might take as factual information. This has proved to be very helpful in resolving a brick wall that I have been trying to solve for over 30 years.

      I totally understand. That’s why I put the warning sign there. But that tree has been public for a long time, and I wanted to use the DNA results in combination with my hypothetical experiments.

      @@gordontye7318 The problem is, that if you are on Ancestry, what you add to your tree does go out as hints to others that may be working on that same person. This has happened to me. Others have entered the same person I have in my tree, but instead of their place of birth being Sicily. Italy they have used Sicily , Nebraska, USA. This bogas place has continually come up in other hints.
