  • Eurowings Airbus A320 NEO final approach and landing on the displaced threshold of runway 01 at Fuerteventura international airport FUE / GCFV on Fuerteventura Island, Spain. Cockpit, Instruments (PFD and ND), pilots, sidestick and charts view. With cockpit audio. Captain is pilot flying and first officer pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 87NG (Eurowings Eight Seven November Golf). Commercial flight number: Eurowings 9552. Produced with 6 cameras in 4k quality. Airplane Registration is D-AENE.
    The runway 01 at Fuerteventura airport is very strange due to the 1000 meter displaced threshold. Most landing thresholds are at the beginning of the physical runway strip or a few meters or feet after that. But 1000 meters is very rare.

    The charts presented in this video are the original charts used during the flight. Many thanks to Lufthansa Systems (Lido mPilot and Lido eRoute Manual) for the permission to show them in the video. All presented charts are for information purposes only and not for navigational use!
    This video is for information purposes only. It does not substitute approved flight training. If you need general or type specific flight training, contact a flight school or a certified flight instructor. Due to technical reasons, the audio may be partly incomplete.

    I mean, it's really unusual to cross the beginning of the runaway at 200ft RA, but the threshold was perfectly crossed at 50ft! Also, I never got tired of watching these airmanship and CRM classes here on your channel Captain!

      Lieber Moritz, vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und das Feedback! Nach Dresden muss ich erst einmal geplant werden. Die Planung ist immer eine Überraschung. Momentan fliege ich viel Salzburg, Funchal und Samos. Was die Länge der Videos betrifft, hast Du recht. Die letzten waren teilweise kürzer. Generell versuche ich eine Mischung zu veröffentlichen. Manche Zuschauer mögen lieber kein Briefing und nur den Endanflug. Andere haben lieber den ganzen Anflug ab Reiseflughöhe oder früher. Es gibt ja auf meinem Kanal schon ein sehr ausführliches Fuerteventura-Anflugvideo, wo das Wetter auch ganz gut passt. Auch ein 39-minütiges Funchal-Video ist dabei. Es gibt auch schonmal technische Probleme mit den Kameras oder dem Ton, die dazu führen, dass am Ende oder am Anfang ein Teil fehlt und damit die Länge des möglichen Videos bestimmen. Darüber hinaus hängt es auch von meiner Zeit ab. Kurze Videos sind meist weniger aufwändig zu schneiden als lange. Statt eine Woche gar keins zu veröffentlichen, mache ich dann lieber ein kurzes Video.

    has to do with el matorral and puerto rosario. taking off from 01 facilitates an early right turn away from the city centre when engines are at high power settings. landings 01 occur further down the runway with potential reverse thrust selected later and not abeam el matorral. same goes for 19 landings, as turns to final can be made tighter.

    It seems like it would be hard to adjust to a private plane after flying something like that.. they require such a light touch in comparison.

    • @Julian-mo9dn
      @Julian-mo9dn ปีที่แล้ว +8

      At some Airlines, the use of A/THR is SOP restricted. For example: EZY doesn't turn off their A/THR. But at many other Airlines it's more or less pilot's discretion - of course keeping the benefits and possible overload into account.

      The pilot flying can decide what he or she wants. We must be able to do it with and without autothrust. I prefer autothrust especially during visual approaches, during bad weather, circling approaches ..... The use of autothrust reduces the workload and gives me more brain capacity for other important things.

    Fantastic video as always! I love the Canary Islands, almost always sunny, but oftentimes very windy. ☀💨 One question: According to what logic do airports ops decide when to send a follow-me? This airfield does not seem complex at all, yet everyone seems to receive a follow-me.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your good feedback! I do not know about when they send a follow-me or not. In general, I have been told that some airports have parking spots that are not approved for self parking in because the dimensions of the spot are a little bit to small. Or it is just a courtesy of the airport to provide the follow me. May be somebody who works at the airport can provide some more information.

      Thanks for watching and your friendly words! I have been told that the original reason for that displaced threshold was that the airport did not own the land in front of the paved runway. But they needed room for the installation of a 900 meters long approach lighting system. So they just displaced the threshold and installed an integrated approach lighting system in that 900 meters part of the runway.

    At what wind speed would you start to encounter more turbulence on the approach to GCFV? I mentioned 30-35KT approach winds and strong surface winds across the Canaries for a customer call, but the landing looked well handled. Perhaps a function of the topography at this particular airport, compared to say LPMA in the same conditions?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is difficult to predict. The warning in the Fuerteventura airport information is: "Down draught on final with westerly winds. Possible windshear and turbulence below 3000ft which may lead to unstable or missed
      APCH" They do not mention a certain windspeed. It is not only about the windspeed, it is also about the wind direction and the changes in wind speed and direction during our flightpath on short final. Madeira can be easy with high steady winds from the right direction and no changes during final approach. If the windspeed and direction changes on short final (Rosario wind indicator) and between the touchdown and mid wind indicators, it may be already getting ugly with 10 knots of wind or so.

    Awesome video as always capt! One question i notice you talking about the trim and that evryone was sitting in front , but isnt the cg more aft as possible (in limits) during flights ? Thanks in advance for an eventual answer and have a wonderful week!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and the good feedback! The plane is always loaded in a way that the CG is in limits. If the planned load and seating would result in a CG out of limits, we would modify it to stay in limits. What we discussed during the approach was the actual trim setting. It was the result of a forward CG (in limits) due to more passengers sitting in the front than in the back of the plane. Have a nice day!

    I'm guessing the airport operators extended the runway to the South but didn't want the expense of relocating the ILS or consulting the locals for a change of flight path? Hence the displaced threshold?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That maybe the case. I heard from others that an approach lighting system could not be installed in front of the runway. So they integrated it in the runway and moved the threshold by 1000 meters.

    Fantastic video, crazy long displaced threshold! What are you stabilised landing criteria? Seems to differ from a 737 SO, ZB. 737 stabilised approach at 1000ft then call continue at minimums, where as you have a call at 400ft and also at minimums, the differences are interesting. Keep up the good work and greetings from Birrfeld Schweiz.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the good feedback! In general (with some exemptions), we are stabilized at 1000 feet above the threshold elevation on speed and in landing configuration. The auto callouts can be programmed from the airline. Some airlines use 500 feet radio altitude, others start at 400. At minimums, the pilot flying decides to "continue" the approach or to abort the approach ("go around, flaps"). Greetings to Switzerland

    Great as always, Nice place. Very long threshold that can confuse during a flare because you don't want to end the runway and also to not touch at the threshold. What are the main features in the NEO version? besides less fuel and efficiency I mean in the visual screen, instruments and etc. I saw a new thing over the PFD that it tell you the status of AutoBrake also AutoBrake off callouts

    • @tomstravels520
      @tomstravels520 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what options you get. BKUP SPD/ALT (displays a back up speed scale incase of unreliable airspeed) ROW/ROPS (warns if you might over run runway) FLS capability (ILS like indication but for non-precision approaches) GA SOFT mode (reduced thrust go around)…….some of these can even be retrofitted to CEO variants.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the good feedback! Besides the fuel and the efficiency it is the much better performance. Compared with the CEO, the NEO at the same weight is able to climb with a higher rate and to a higher flight level. And: The emissions are reduced by a great amount.

    Hello captain, thank you for the wonderful channel and videos. I’d love to learn more about descent and energy management as I love to use A32x on flightsimulator. Which technique you use? I know normally 3times altitude gives the distance required. Then how many miles do you add for deceleration from 300/250/210 (green dot)? I read there are many different opinions regarding miles for deceleration. All the best

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and your great feedback! The 3x rule usually works fine. Add a few miles for the deceleration. In general, it all depends on the wind, the weight and the aircraft type. If you do a managed descent and follow the precalculated path, you can see how the Airbus would do it by itself.

    Hallo eine Frage würdest du unter aktuellen Umständen noch zur einer Ausbildung unter einer Airline also Efa oder Aero Logic oder Condor raten oder bei einer privaten Schule erst den Atpl machen und dann die Assessment danach machen ?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wenn man die Möglichkeit hat, eine Ausbildung mit Jobgarantie bei einer bestimmten Airline zu machen, würde ich das immer bevorzugen. Momentan hat man auch sehr gute Chancen, wenn man von einer privaten, "freien" Schule kommt. Wenn der Bedarf aber wieder geringer wird, werden erstmal die Leute von der "eigenen" Schule eingestellt. Auch wenn die Ausbildung bei der ungebundenen Schule super war, hilft einem das dann sehr wenig. Hier macht man ja auch das Assessment erst nach der Ausbildung. Im Extremfall hat man dann die Ausbildung gemacht und alle Prüfungen irgendwie bestanden. Aber man fällt durch die sehr anspruchsvollen Assessments und bekommt keinen Job. Wenn möglich, ist es immer besser, erst das Assessment und dann die Ausbildung zu machen. Das ist zumindest meine persönliche Meinung.

      Depends if they have a pilot onboard. Cabin crew aren’t trained to fly an aircraft even in an emergency. If if that pilot doesn’t fly that aircraft they could operate the radios

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and your great feedback! One reason because we have always two pilots on the flightdeck is the redundancy in case of an incapacitation. In case of an incapacitation, the remaining pilot diverts the plane to the next possible airport with medical assistance. He will take over also the duties of the incapacitated crew member. We train this on a regular basis in the simulator. Sure, if there is a 3rd pilot in the cockpit, he or she would take over the duties of the incapacitated flight crew member.

      Usually, we do not do that. Here it was a little different because we got a direct to clearance to a waypoint which had to be crossed at 2500 feet for the standard glideslope. Our clearance was to descent to 2700 feet and we were cleared for the approach. Over water, we descended a few feet a moment before approaching the localizer centerline to avoid a level off at 2700 feet and the need of a subsequent glideslope from above maneuver.

      Thanks! This is not allowed and could be treated as an off runway landing. The only time it may be possible without bad consequences for the pilots and the airline would be in an emergency situation where you need more runway length than the available runway from the displaced threshold. I am sure that in that particular case tower would approve immediately a landing at the beginning of the paved runway.
