- The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is an American single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). As the result of the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program, the aircraft was designed as an air superiority fighter, but also has ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence capabilities. The prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, built most of the F-22's airframe and weapons systems and conducted the final assembly, while Boeing provided the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.

The F-22 first flew in 1997 and was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 before it formally entered service in December 2005 as the F-22A. Despite its protracted development and operational difficulties, USAF considers the F-22 a critical component of its tactical airpower. The fighter's combination of stealth, aerodynamic performance, and mission systems enable unprecedented air combat capabilities.
The USAF had originally planned to buy a total of 750 ATFs. In 2009, the program was cut to 187 operational aircraft due to high costs, a lack of air-to-air missions due to the focus on counterinsurgency operations at the time of production, a ban on exports, and the development of the more affordable and versatile F-35, with the last F-22 delivered in 2012.
In 1981, the U.S. Air Force identified a requirement for an Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) to replace the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. Code-named "Senior Sky", this air-superiority fighter program was influenced by emerging worldwide threats, including new developments in Soviet air defense systems and the proliferation of the Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker"- and Mikoyan MiG-29 "Fulcrum"-class of fighter aircraft. It would take advantage of the new technologies in fighter design on the horizon, including composite materials, lightweight alloys, advanced flight control systems and avionics, more powerful propulsion systems, and most importantly, stealth technology. In 1983, the ATF concept development team became the System Program Office (SPO) and managed the program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The demonstration and validation (Dem/Val) request for proposals (RFP) was issued in September 1985, with requirements placing a strong emphasis on stealth and supercruise. Owing to the immense investments required to develop the technology needed to achieve performance goals, teaming between companies was encouraged. Of the seven bidding companies, Lockheed and Northrop were selected on 31 October 1986...

What a machine, in 1969 I was 9 and my uncle Jack who piloted the F4 phantom in Vietnam was home on leave for Christmas, I was in awe, this F22 is an incredible design, thank God for all who serve this great country. 🙏🇺🇸

The B1B Lancer is just an amazing aircraft. One of my favorite. A deadly bomber with the sexy lines and deadly looks of the F16. I'm thankful its never had to fly the missions it was built for! 🤓

People questions the F22 and America air force.. The raptor was out in the early 2000s and was the first stealth fighter of its kind. And now in 2023 still a top dog considering China and Russia has just developed new modern aircraft.. That shows how amazing still is the raptor

When it comes to design and stealth the Chinese and Russian Stealth planes are still well short of the Raptor with regards to stealth. The Su-57 is not actually that stealthy.
The greatest air superiority fighter in the world. It won its competition for a reason, and despite its increasing age remains the top platform, the top dog. So glad to live in a time when I can see the legendary F-22 Raptor

the yf 23 looks like someone on drugs did it, idiotic wide wings, just plain ugly the f22 raptor is so wickedly beautiful when ever 1 flew over my house from Tyndall air force base I would drop everything and run out of my house to hear the roaring thunder of this wickid beautiful beast, and that was only slow cruising, I imagine at their top speed I would not be able to see it and only hear it when it was 10 miles away

I was out in Utah or Arizona and 4 of them flew over. They also hit the sound barrier. It was one of the most shocking things I have witnessed. The noise and speed is one thing I’ll never forget. They flew by twice.
It has already been surpassed by whatever Lockheed Martin announced they have successfully tested. We only have to wait and see what miracle they are cooking behind the scenes

The yf-23 had a more advanced air inlet and could hold much more than air to air missiles, the f-22 was stuck with air to air only due to its size they couldnt fit anything bigger. The yf-23 was also reaching mach 2.0 in test phase while the f-22 topped at mach 1.6. 38-40 thousand pounds of thrust is what i always heard on the yf-23 put out, while the f-22 has 35 thousand pounds of thrust with the same engine.. If im not mistaken, the f-22 only beat the yf-23 in one category out of around 10, and it was low speed manueverability. The high speed manueverability wasnt any better for the f-22, and the yf-23 could operate at speeds the f-22 couldnt even reach. It would of made a great interceptor and is the only true 6th gen airframe to this day, its a fully unique diamond wing design. We foolishly left it out in a desert after it lost the competition, thats why the su-57 and chinese jets match it almost identically from the sides and front. Both planes over acheived, so they went with the lesser hassle, from what i know Northrup was getting crap from the government about the b-2 spirit price and production, but this i think would of took a different route, this thing had potential.

@@danielmendricks7205 yeah well both planes over exceeded so, to them they went with the safer bet but it wasnt a wise choice looking back imo. They were also upset with northrop over the b2 project and how the expenses with that got ran up, they may have thought the same would happen here.

The original YF-23 design was first considered but would have had issues with flight deck space, handling, storage, landing, and catapult launching reasons requiring a different design. 😂😂😂😂 hence didn’t get built 😂

I think it's past time we lift the export ban on the F-22 Raptor to our NATO allies.
The USAF's necessary procurement of the F-15EX, which is an upgrade to an obsolete 70's technology airframe, is ALL because of the foolish, short-sighted decision by the Obama administration in 2010 to STOP production of the F-22A Raptor. NOT ONLY did Obama and Gates HALT production, they SHUT DOWN the production line at 187 aircraft, when the minimum requirement was for 262 F-22's. With the ageing and retiring F-15C/D fleet, this left the USAF with NO CHOICE but to invest billions in Boeing's proposal, the F-15EX upgrade. By now, the USAF WOULD HAVE over 370 F-22's for their air dominance mission IF the production line had remained open. This would have allowed for the complete retirement of the F-15C/D and the rotation of older F-22's to reserve and ANG units. BUT ill-fated and idiotic decisions by career morons to fund a welfare state is jeopardizing national security and debilitating US military operational readiness.

Not me, for the past ten years if you Googled the F-22 you can pretty much learn all there is to know about it yet after 25+ years and until recently EVERYTHING about the YF-23 was still classified and most of it still is that should tell you which was the better platform. I'd rather have the YF-23 especially considering what they did declassify. Fun Fact the only thing an F-22 has shot down is a Chinese balloon Every other war plane in military service throughout history has a higher kill ratio than the raptor.

The yf-23 was a failed jet. Glad that it wasn't made. That jet couldn't turn like the f-22.
@@illeyez505 turning, it turns out, isn’t all that important. Super maneuverability has been proven in exercises to be pretty useless. You may get one fox 2 shot or one gun shot but then you are stuck with no energy. It’s an air show trick is all.
@@johnmaguire3748- It isn't important, until you need it. I've heard the same argument made back in the 60s when aircraft designers and experts say that guns are obsolete. Fighters are never going to dogfight again. They days of air combat maneuvering are over. All you need are missiles with long range. Then Vietnam happened.
On paper, maybe super maneuverability will never be used in combat. Then again, something unexpected always seems to come up. Let's say for instance, that a near peer enemy has a fighter than is stealth, can super cruise, and has visual range weapons like off boresight missiles and a gun. He got vectored into you and neither of you could get a radar lock because of good stealth, electronic jamming, terrain or whatever. You enter the merge. Your flares defeat each other's Fox 2s. He can super maneuver and you can't. Now what?
The folks who were pushing atomic bombs and ICBMs pretty much said the same thing. You don't need bombers, aircraft carriers, and tanks any more. The days of conventional warfare is over. Why build a large army or navy when they can be wiped out with a nuclear bomb?
It's much better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

@@derekbaker777 - "Speed and Maneuverability" are antonyms. You cannot have both. Listen to the first 9 seconds of the video again. This plane is never supposed to be within 50 miles of an enemy. Likely closer to 100.
Great video, now we understand why the YF23 had those huge weird tails inclined at an 45 degree angle , the tandem wing and the height of its tails were designed for high maneuverability at high speed instead of the thrust vectoring we see on the Raptor which has high maneuverability at low speed . Apart from that both aircrafts are State of the Art.
I was living in Mojave at the time. Our biological father worked at Edwards Air Force Base. The ATF program is 1 of the many secret government programs he was part of.

With all due respect to the gentlemen who made presentations on this video, the F-22 has been discontinued and F-35 was developed and will be the primary fighter-bomber for the US and its allies. Engineering is a complex mixture of features that must be balanced to create something that works in the real world. The modern fighter-bomber has many features that must come together to make an effective combat-worthy weapon. One overwhelming feature is to make something in sufficient numbers to overpower your adversary. As many generals have warned their countrymen, in the modern era we get carried away with technology because it is sexy. What we need to focus on is combat-worthiness. What will actually happen in an all out war is determined by the shear number of fighters with well-trained pilots that a nation can get up in the air. What we learned in Vietnam is that air superiority alone will not win the war. As general Shinseki stated that we needed more boots on the ground. In the Vietnam War the US needed more general infantry on the ground to take control of an area. Air superiority alone cannot win the war.

The F16 vs F4 picture was of both planes flying as tight a turn as possible without loosing vertical lift. So it was a fair comparison showcasing the F16's greater maneuverability. There is a video of the crazy avionics of the F16 that talks about the F4 and F16 flight models.

I served with the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center's Detachment 6 as a Suitability Logistics Analyst on the Raptor Acquisition Program. We analyzed (tested) the jet and its Logistics Infrastructure, identified deficiencies, and AFOTEC reported to the Pentagon. #BestJobEver.!

The Horton Ho-229 was not originally designed to be stealthy, just a correction. Tests were performed on a full scale model and show that it wasn't stealthy, the Hortons probably said that later on for clout.
Key part of that that keeps getting missed "Stealthy FOR RADARS AT THAT TIME"

It takes a long time to design and produce a machine that is as reliable as is required for the US MILITARY.
What I find amazing is that both of these aircraft have a smaller radar cross section than a single one of the missiles they carry.

SSShhhh the F-22 fans can't handle the truth about how Lockhead won both the ATF and JTSF program competitions and contracts. Fub fact the only thing a F-22 has shot down is a Chinese balloon in its 20+ years of service and numerous YF-23 tech swap out's for the junk Lockhead had installed in them and significant cost over runs that cause the AF to cancel the contract
I have watched many comparisons of the YF22 and the YF23. The vast majority of what I have seen stated that the YF23 was the superior aircraft. Nearly equal to the YF22 in maneuverability without the thrust vectoring, faster, and had a much longer range. The problem seemed to be with the USAF being unsure if Northrup/McDonnell Douglas could deliver the fighter since they already had the contract for producing the B2 Spirit Bomber. While the F22 is the best fighter going today, it seems that we took the runner-up in this fighter competition. It's too bad we couldn't have had both.
What's crazy is the f15, and now f15ex, is still a dominant fighter. And the us is currently testing 6th gen.

Just the technology that was developed to create those rounded shapes out of advanced composite materials is just astounding. Then you begin talking about oyd advanced airframe, engines, avionics, & new armaments and it truly makes me proud that Americansaccomplishedthis feat& and also thankful we wont have to go up against it. And no, the Chinese J20 is not comparable. Hopefully we never have to find out though.

@@jimkluska253 One of the YF-23 prototypes was a Navy carrier variant with reinforced landing gear and a retractable tailhook, The navy was real interested in it very early on if you watch the documentary about it at it's roll out and first flight the Navy was on hand with AF brass to watch it. its not a coincidence Lockhead won the AFT contract nor the JSF contract and both times delivered the SECOND BEST PERFORMING DESIGN, the F-22 and the F-35, they just knew who's palms to grease in the capitol and DOD.

Actually the YF23 met the requirements better than the YF22 did. It's faster and more stealthy. Thrust vectoring nozzles were not part of the requirements but could have been designed into the aircraft post build. Although the YF22 is an outstanding fighter, i believe the YF23 got a raw deal. The DoD did the same thing with the Glock handgun, as they didn't even complete testing and went with the Sig Sauer platform even though it didn't perform as reliable as the Glock. Both projects are clear evidence that government doesn't even follow their own guidelines but expects everyone to obey them regardless.

The Raptor test pilots were able to pull maneuvers during the exhibitions that the YF23 couldn’t…that was the biggest selling point for DoD. When your team’s project can do more than the competition’s can, it’s always gonna look better.
Tom crashed because he was trying to fly the 22 like any other plane. You can't do that, the avionics on the 22 fly the plane.
The oscillation was caused due to pilot input and computer corrections.

The YF-23 actually beat the YF-22 in the majority of flight maneuvers and tests. Over all Lockheed Martin had a better marketing campaign and used, whining, and dining better than did Northrop. Not to mention they had a better track record at that time of showing flight status and maintenance on the units that they built.
Both sides of this competition said the yf23 performed way better than the f22 in all categories. Both were surprised when the contract was awarded to Lockheed. I assume at that point there were probably some bribes involved, or the air force was mad at Northrup due to the cost over runs of the B2 bomber.
According to all its pilots, it's the most manoeuvrable fighter jet ever designed, and that's the least impressive thing about it. It doesn't have opponents, it has victims.
