  • The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin-turbofan, straight-wing, subsonic attack aircraft developed by Fairchild Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF). In service since 1976, it is named for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II-era fighter-bomber effective at attacking ground targets, but commonly referred to as the "Warthog" or "Hog". The A-10 was designed to provide close air support (CAS) to friendly ground troops by attacking armored vehicles, tanks, and other enemy ground forces; it is the only production-built aircraft designed solely for CAS to have served with the U.S. Air Force. Its secondary mission is to direct other aircraft in attacks on ground targets, a role called forward air controller-airborne; aircraft used primarily in this role are designated OA-10.
The A-10 was intended to improve on the performance and firepower of the Douglas A-1 Skyraider. Its airframe was designed for durability, with measures such as 1,200 pounds (540 kg) of titanium armor to protect the cockpit and aircraft systems, enabling it to absorb damage and continue flying. Its ability to take off and land from relatively short runways permits operation from airstrips close to the front lines, and its simple design enables maintenance with minimal facilities.
The A-10 served in the First Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm), the American-led intervention against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, where the aircraft distinguished itself. The A-10 also participated in other conflicts such as in Grenada, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, and against the Islamic State in the Middle East.
The A-10A single-seat variant was the only version produced, though one pre-production airframe was modified into the YA-10B twin-seat prototype to test an all-weather night-capable version. In 2005, a program was started to upgrade the remaining A-10A aircraft to the A-10C configuration, with modern avionics for use with precision weaponry. The U.S. Air Force had stated the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II would replace the A-10 as it entered service, but this remains highly contentious within the USAF and in political circles. With a variety of upgrades and wing replacements, the A-10's service life can be extended to 2040; the service has no planned retirement date as of June 2017.

People who say that airplane is obsolete and we dont need it anymore have never had their ass on the line when that ugly bastard showed up to rain death on their enemy. Just the distinct sound of those engines will make any enemy regret their decisions. It is by far the most effective close air support platform ever created.

That is the most logical suggestion I've seen on the subject of the Warthog's future.
I've been told by several Iraq and Afghan vets that scrapping or mothballed the A-10' was one if the stupidest ideas the Air Force has ever had.
They also all loved the Apaches and the AC-130 gunships for the close air support they provided in both wars.
I've seen syffestiins that would remove the 105 mm cannons from the AC-130's and that seems almost as illogical as retiring the Warthogs.

If you have never read Colonel Hans Ulrich Rudel's autobiography called "Stuka Pilot", I do recommend it. What that man accomplished fighting for his Country and Homeland during WWII is almost superhuman. He was shot down or forced to land over 30 times and survived. He landed his Stuka behind enemy lines on many different occasions to save members of his unit that were shot down in Russia, squeezed them into his Stuka and took off. He was shot down in Russia, got captured, immediately effected an escape (being shot in the shoulder in the process) and ran over 50 kilometers getting back to safety at the German front line with the Russians in hot pursuit. Rudel got his leg almost blown off (it had to be amputated at the knee) after being hit by enemy fire in his aircraft, was able to safely land under extreme pain to the point of almost passing out and was able to land his aircraft safely with his rear gunner guiding him down to hand). Thankfully for Col. Rudel, his rear gunner at that time in the war was also his unit's Medical Doctor who had taken over for his other long time gunner who drowned escaping the Russians on foot. Colonel Rudel was back in his Stuka six weeks later against Doctor's orders with a bloody stump that was not healed. One of the reasons he survived many very dangerous and deadly encounters was partially because he was an accomplished athlete which no doubt helped him survive when others in his unit died trying to get back to the German lines with him. On one occasion, Rudel, his rear gunner, and one other two man aircrew who were shot down were attempting to get back to the German front lines on foot from enemy territory. He was the only one who made it....BARELY and through so much physical exertion, most humans probably would have given up or been killed. The other three drowned by hypothermia in an extremely cold river. Rudel made it, barely, probably because of his physical shape being an athlete. By the end of WWII, Rudel had been awarded the equivalent of 5 medals of honor in Germany and was the only Soilder/Pilot in history to achieve that honor and the only German Soldier ever to receive the GOLDEN Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. A German General once commented that instead of a Division of men, just send in Rudel, "he's like a Division of men all by himself". He flew an experimental Stuka fitted with 30mm cannons under the wing which he called his "Cannon Bird". He destroyed more tanks (with his Cannon Bird which was one of the most effective planes in the world (at that time) against tanks and other mechanized ground vehicles than any pilot in history (over 500), sometimes up to 15 to 20 in one day. He would continue to return to his airfield and keep getting restocked with ammunition and immediately went back up into the air doing this from sun up to sundown for months on end sometimes with little rest. He also sunk a Battleship, a Destroyer, and a Cruiser. Furthermore, he destroyed over 800 vehicles, 4 armored trains, over 150 artillery positions, and over 70 beach landing boats. He also shot down 9 enemy aircraft in air to air combat. It is unknown the exact amount of lives he sent to their untimely deaths during the war but no doubt it was thousands. Rudel flew over 2,500 combat missions (another record) and most aviation historians consider Colonel Rudel the most accomplished air combat pilot of all time, having records that will most likely never be broken due to the rise of "drone" style unmanned aircraft. Colonel Rudel flew combat missions until the very last days of the war in Europe and finally flew to the Western lines into an area of Germany under the control of the United States and surrendered, intentionally running his Stuka off the end of the runway upon landing at the US base so they couldn't take his plane as a war prize. He instructed all the other pilots flying with him to surrender to do the exact same thing, however a few of the aircraft did survive their landings at the US airstrip intact. Rudel even took American soldiers for a walk around of the Stuka after surrendering at the base given them a tour of it. The first soldier at the airbase who ran up to Rudel after he crashed at the end of the runway attempted to steal Rudel's Golden Knights Cross (which he was wearing) at gunpoint trying to rip it from his neck. Rudel pushed the soldier away and slammed the canopy back shut until the Commanding officer arrived and told his solider to back down. Russia demanded that Rudel be turned over to them for punishment for all the damage and death he had inflicted on them during the war. The United States refused to turn him over to Russia due to Rudel having a price on his head from Joseph Stalin personally. Rudel remained a Nazi for his entire life refusing to renounce his allegiance to Adolf Hitler and National Socialism. He did however (along with MANY other Nazi's) consult with the United States on their development of the A-10 Warthog which is essentially a similar type of air war machine to what the Stuka was used for in WWII. As said in this documentary, Rudel's guidance and suggestions based on his personal experience in WWII were invaluable in developing the most effective and devastating ground attack aircraft in the world today. The A-10 "Warthog" is exclusively possessed and flown by the United States of America.

@@nexpro6118 no it IS the best at its role. Its role is close air support with air superiority.
There's NO plane, jet, aircraft, that is ideal for everything, and none that can fill every role by itself.
Some aircraft thrives at, and is designed for, establishing air superiority, but it sucks at other roles.
Every single aircraft in use, have SOMETHING that is not great at.
So using the excuse of "the warthog hasn't been tested or won't be any good without air superiority" to suggest that they are no longer useful or necessary, or "inferior" is irrelevant and just pure nonsense.
Of course air superiority is extremely important and vitally necessary. But air superiority ALONE is not enough.
...and that's where the fact about the warthog comes into play... Even with air superiority, there's no other aircraft that is superior at close ground support, than the warthog.
...and that IS its role. Therefore it IS the best at its role.

The A-10 is a prime example of an aircraft designed to fulfill a specific purpose and it meets that objective in a spectacular manner. If the objective requires 2,000 mph and cross-country range, maybe this isn't the tool to pull out of the hanger. If the job requires extensive use of the "Mk 1 Eyeball" and hand-held binoculars, few aircraft can do it better! Every interview I've watched of a Wart Hog pilot, reinforces the perfect match this tool is to the job at hand... and the guys on the ground that are trying their best to climb into a hole the size of a basket ball, know that the "Good Guys" have arrived when they hear that big gun growling!!

Who says it's ugly? I think it's beautiful. When form follows function, it's a harmonious blend that screams no-nonsense.
Then again, I'm a grunt, so weapons platforms like this one warm my heart a lot more than the rarefied world of fighter jets and strategic bombers.
Same reason I love the AC-130, the Apache and Super Cobras, and the aircraft that take us into battle and evacuate our casualties such as the Huey, The CH-53, and the C-130.
To a combat Marine, ugly yet powerful aircraft are hard-on inducing. Get some...
I have heard rumors that they plan to retire the A-10, which would make me very sad. I think this is a weapon system that remains unmatched and will probably continue to do so for a very long time, with continuous upgrades to sensors and targeting systems and many other things.

I was asked what was the best sound I've ever heard by a nephew of mine. My answer didn't mean much to him until he was years later. He expected music lol. The sweetest sound was a flight of 2 A-10s rolling in and taking out insurgence ( I'm being polite here) 50 yards away. First you hear those2 turbofans, then you see hell on earth then the sound of the whistle of them flying overhead. Thanks to the USAF forward air controller. The only thing left was red dirt and pieces of meat. So the sweetest sound for me were the A-10s. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for those 2 Hogs.

When you're in a bad spot, and you call for air support... When you hear the A-10 coming, it's like being a 5 year old kid (hurt, scared, lost, cold, hungry - it doesn't matter) hearing their mother's voice. You know that the mother is coming to protect or defend her young. You go from thinking you're not gonna make it home, and quickly realizing right now all of the lasts you'll do in this life are occuring right now... To saying those taunting remarks a kid might say to someone who was picking on them suddenly getting their ass beat. "I told you, my momma's coming and what she's gonna do to you they can't even make books or movies about because it's gonna be BAD for you." When you've been somewhere you wish you weren't and had mamma warthog come settle the score - you NEVER forget her scream. It's cathardic. The sound of the gun... It's like a T-Rex and you know it doesn't matter what it's made of - it's getting CHEWED UP.

I don't mean to be critical, but the MIG 25 Foxbat was designed to take off quickly from short strips, use ground controllers to orient missiles against the B-70 Valkyrie. A plane we never actually came out with. It can't dogfight, it's manuevering (compared to standard fighters) sucks, it's barely got range to make it 500 miles. How is that a badass? So it can go Mach 3+. It can do it once, then they have to scrap the engines. It doesn't actually have a purpose other than to do a short range sprint. That's it.

I love the A-10 and everything about it. The GAU/8A Avenger rotary cannon, it's looks, the sound of its engines...and of course the famous brrrt, however I saw a video not too long ago making statements about how garbage it is. I don't know how accurate the video is (especially since the person used a lot of in game video clips "proving his point") but he also sited "very controlled tests" on the main gun. He also said that more current attack aircraft can do everything the A-10 can do only better, from a greater distance and much higher altitude. The A-10 can take an amazing amount of damage (I've seen A-10's landing back at base missing half it's wing, one engine gone, full of BIG holes, landing on non existent landing gear and other types of major damage)...but what if the plane doesn't get shot in the first place? That's a plane that can return to base, get reloaded and fueled and back up into the skies where a shot up A-10, if it manages to get back, is done for. That's it. Pilot is (hopefully) safe but will need a new plane in order to complete another mission.
Again, I have no idea how much (if anything) of what he said in that video is accurate and true. IF (and that is a big "if") that video is true...can someone let the U.S. Air Force that is be more than happy to give a few A-10's a good home. I don't need the bang-bang or any of the other boom-boom's, I just want the plane (preferably functional) and a few thousand gallons of go juice.

I remember the first time I saw the A-10. I was a teenager on a family vacation at Myrtle Beach SC. Sad to think that AFB. no longer exists
