I appreciate the list. I enjoy the videos because inspite os having read over 200 Srar Trek books, im unfamiliar with most of the more recest novels. I was expecting to see atleast 1 Judith and Garfield -Reeves novel. Personally my top 5 would be 1 TOS Uhuras Song by Janet Kaigan, 2 Prime Directive by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, 3 Imzadi by Peter David, 4 STV Mosaic by Jeri Taylor, 5 DS9 A Stitch in Time by Andrew Robinson i would add the Return by William Shatner and the Reeves Stevens is great for tgose who were upset with Kirks death in Generations. I love the discussion because peoples preference in Star Trek novels are so varied.
Great list. My number one got to book is Doctor`s Orders by Diane Duane. If you are a Dr McCoy fan you'll love this book. He is in command of the Enterprise. It's so worth the read. 🖖
Great list. My favourite Star Trek book ever is A Stitch in Time. It's the only Trek novel I have read more than once (I'm not a big rereader) That Discovery book is in my TBR pile and I'll admit keeps getting pushed back but I may make more of an effort to get it read after your recommendation I have just commented on your top Trek authors and I can't believe I missed off Greg Cox in my list. Amazing Trek author and I highly recommend the 2 Eugenics Wars books Sorry about the spamming of comments but I've just found your channel and greatly enjoying your content Take care
Great video. Thank you. I just read random books and try a smattering from different series to get a feel for them, but I really prefer TOS books. I think though that you have persuaded me to get The Antares Maelstrom. I am unfamiliar with the TV series that are currently out and am trying to bingewatch now the various series, so I don't want to read any content from the current series until I've seen the shows and understand the characters, but I am definitely looking forward to them. I have read different things about the novel Kahless, but I will get around to it eventually and make my own determination. Going to subscribe to your channel now.

That's a great list, Jonathan 👍! My top 5 novels right now would be: 1) Star Trek: The Ashes Of Eden by William Shatner and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. 2) Star Trek: The Next Generation #10: A Rock And A Hard Place by Peter David and Star Trek: Prime Directive by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens are tied for # 2 3) Star Trek #61: Sanctuary by John Vornholt 4) Star Trek: Enterprise: Surak's Soul by J.M. Dillard 5) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Big Game by Sandy Schofield. That would be my top 5 list for right now. My list is always changing though. Live long and prosper, Jonathan 🖖.
Definitely putting the Shattnerverse books on my TBR list, although with how many are on my shelf/TBR list, it'll probably be 2023 by the time I get there, as I have something like 50 other Trek books scheduled for 2022.
@@jonathankoan 2023's not that far away 🙂. When you get to them, you're gonna wish you read them first. But they are heavily steeped in Star Trek lore from the Original Series so be warned, Jonathan, in order to fully appreciate those novels, you should be familiar with the TOS TV show. And I just know that you'll love seeing Captain Kirk and Captain Picard team up to take on some pretty big intergalactic threats. The two Captains team up in 8 out of the 10 books. The Shatnerverse books are some of my favorite Star Trek stories ever. Live long and prosper, Jonathan 🖖
The novel is takedown by John Jackson Miller. It’s not in the Typhon Pact line of novels, but the actual “Typhon Pact” is present and the story is most excellent. It works well as a stand-alone book.
After reading / collecting Star Trek Novels for decades, my 3 top writers are Micheal Jan Friedman, Peter David and Dafydd Ab Hugh. Edit: Agree on Picard and STD, for me, they are not Trek Canon. Edit: Subscribed. 🇦🇺
A very good top 5 list, all great reads. Though there is a UNIVERSE of incredible older stand alone Star Trek novels. My top 5 in no particular order: FEDERATION by Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens, YESTERDAY'S SON by A. C. Crispin, THE LOST YEARS by J.M. Dillard, VENDETTA by Peter David (actually any Q novel by David is a Must Read, along with his New Frontier series), FINAL FRONTIER by Diane Carey. Honorable Mention: Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan by Vonda N. McIntyre, while the movie is a classic, the novelization is a 100 times better.
Unfortunately, I don't have affiliate links. However, I suggest going to either Fantastic Fiction(which usually does have links) or ABE books to buy used copies. Some of them are in print, but others aren't, sadly.
Okay, so I just bought Star Trek:Mere anarchy.(6part saga) I know NOTHING about star trek. I'd love to know your thoughts on the book if you've read it.
I am not well versed in too much of The Original Series novels, not nearly as much as the Post-Nemesis novels. I haven't read it, but I intend to one day, but it'll probably be a while since I have over 50 Trek books on my TBR and I read about 2 a month. But I hope you enjoy them!
Still getting into the Prenemesis books. But I loved Kahless and the last few of the “A Time to” series. Other than that, I need to read more as I’m mostly focusing on the Post-nemesis books and TOS.
@@jonathankoan Excellent. Thanks for the quick reply! I haven’t read many Star Trek books and the ones I did were back in the 90s, like Imzadi, which I’ve since heard is a great one, so I guess I chose well!

Good video on the books. The capitalism and communism comparison isnt a good way to compare since you are coming at it from an imperial american point of view and capitalism has only one form in that it exploits lower class for the upper class to survive and cant work in any other way no matter how much you try to change it. While communism is about not exploiting and instead making society better while also improving the individual with the most freedom possible. In real life, we want socialism and communism to win out since capitalism will never get us to a society like Star Trek has and that is what they have in the UFP. A world with no money, class, poverty, and bigotry is possible now but we are not allowed to have it, we will have to fight for it.
