Seriously? You're not looking at the right time, mate. Newcastle are not the richest club in the world. They have the richest owners, a subtle but significant point. Newcastle have a European Trophy, (Fairs Cup, 1969), Sunderland do not. Nor have Newcastle ever been in League 1 (Old 3rd division). Try again in 10 years time... or probably don't, it might be more embarrassing for Sunderland.

Anyway....the answer was highly debatable until Sunderland's relegation from the top tier in 1958. Since then - and particularly over the passed 30 years - Sunderland's status within the game has shrunken greatly. NUFC are much the bigger club today on every metric (except historic league titles).

I knew this video would get a fierce response. It's all subjective especially with both these clubs, they hate each other so much neither side is prepared to yield anything. As a neutral though, Sunderland have won more league titles, Newcastle have won more FA Cups, they have both finished as runners up in the league cup twice, Newcastle do have more success in Europe however, the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and the Intertoto Cup are not recognised as official honours by UEFA, neither is the Anglo Italian Cup they won. In terms of attendances, they both get big crowds and always show up away from home. It's hard to believe though with Newcastle their last major domestic trophy was 1955.

Amazing channel I love football history , hard one really both pretty even in various ways, think crowds should go back to both around 1892 there site out there that tell you, but fantastic criteria but of course sometimes can be mis leading , but stats don't ger generally lie, where Sunderland out do Newcastle I would say is there top flight positions n 6 league championships many 2nd n 3rd places certainly from 1892 to 1958 Sunderland all top flight n generally top half Finnishes at worst , 1958 onwards been a really struggle up n down but cup 73 n other cup final appearances , away support both have great but Newcastle I would say , edge it going from what I've seen n heard 60s 70s 80s n 90s n other more recent decades, Newcastle more Glorious cup team over all decades n higher average attendances 40s 50s in particular but not alot in it , Newcastle generally last 50 odd years had more glamorous players incredible names obviously, Sunderland 75k attendance os a big feather in there cap, so yes pretty spot on generally
