I'm about to buy a pearson 35 and head out across the Atlantic for a circumnavigation. You're one of the two channels that inspired me to do it. We will probably be seeing each other somewhere in the world at some point. 😅
Sam, I like how you show us what you are cooking just for a brief amount of time. Unlike the other sailing videos that spend half their video showing their cooking skills and eating. Keep up the great work.
Either Sam is very confident and competent in his capabilities ..... or naive ... and I suspect the former .... his attitude is always up beat regardless of the pending weather conditions ... its great to watch a sailing channel where the occupants aren't displaying stress and worry.
Some tips: Use the R & D flexible shaft coupling, which has one bolt that has a rounded and painted head. Loosen off all the top nuts on the mounts. The rounded head is a reference for the feeler gauge. Getting it aligned vertically is not so challenging, but if it's out laterally, the motor mount bases have to be loosened. Here, a come-along or tackle and a pipe across the hatch opening will take weight off the mounts and permit the engine to be yarded side to side. You can also use the boom and a tackle. Of course, have the wrenches you need. When the engine is in good alignment, whittle a piece of wood that can be wedged under the shaft to locate that position; that makes rough alignment simple and fast. With dripless seals, the neutral or in-line position of the shaft is your best guess. When my boat had the Yanmar 3GM30F, I had to do the work behind the engine, which was rough going. Now the boat has the Yanmar YM30AE, which is lower in profile and everything level on top. I can now pad the top of the engine and lie on it to do this work: Much easier. The alignment is an annual obligation, but I didn't do it before. Now I do it and easily. The mounts settle with time and are good only for about five years or so. My boat is steel, so nothing else changes.
Hi Sam, love your adventures. A comment on solar power.... I lived off grid for awhile..... When you have shadows on solar panels it is much more serious than just a section that doesn't "pump" electrons, it's like having a big hole in a pipe where electricity from the rest of the panel can flow backwards through the panel instead of being pushed into the batteries. Even a small shadow can affect charge rates drastically, much more than just the percentage of panel shaded. Especially with your panels at a low angle to the Sun. Smooth sailing.
Would it make sense to have your panels switchable? Meaning if one is partially shaded turn it off so it isn't adversely affecting the others? You could probably make it automatic using an Arduino or similar microcontroller, any panel not putting out power above a certain threshold gets disconnected. That way you don't have to keep looking to see what panels are shaded as the sail/sun/boat moves around.
A company has some new solar panels that are supposed to fix this sort of issue. I might try them next year. Also on the next boat I will do a solar arch extending behind the backstay and higher up to prevent any shading from the boom and have maximum room in cockpit.
@@jodyssey9921 Individual panels have blocking diodes to prevent reverse current flow in an entire panel, preventing battery discharge at night. Reverse current flow is limited to within individual panels, where even most of a panel in full Sunlight could be charging at full power but most of the current produced flows backwards through the shaded photovoltaic cells. Any other panels hooked up to a battery pack in parallel will put out full power in full Sunlight with no loss, only the shaded panel not charging, and no discharge from batteries.....only failure to charge.
@@samholmessailing Yeah, you really have space issues on a sailboat limiting ideal Sun exposure, and LOTS of things to shade your panels. Solar panels are amazing, and engineers are working to overcome their minor problems. Just looking online now, this came up: "Bypass diodes -Some solar panels are equipped with bypass diodes, which allow the panel to continue producing electricity even when some cells are shaded. These diodes redirect the current around the shaded cells, preventing a significant drop in the panel's overall output." So by choosing a more modern panel design you could get much more power. If you haven't already, I would really enjoy a video on navigation. The apps you use and how you download charts and how much of the world you have downloaded. Do you have a backup sextant and paper charts you can use? Thanks!
I have a tip about bowlines - if you really need it to not come undone use a “water-bowline”. Create a clove-hitch and now pass your working end up and around (as you would normally) behind the standing end and back though the hitch. In other words you tie it the same way just feeding it through a clove-hitch.
Learning to juggle well while under sail might be cool, I envisioned a large moving structure with you onstage juggling inside. What a magnificent circus act.
get a zip tie into the motor mount gap and cinch it as tight as you can. it is only temporary till you get new mounts and you'll get the snugness you are looking for.
Guess what job I’ve got lined up for tomorrow. Yep, my shiny new motor mounts arrived yesterday and I’m looking forward to getting them installed. I’m hoping that getting the engine alignment fixed will stop the horrible squeal at certain rpms. Sometimes it feels like there is a never ending jobs but strangely satisfying at the same time. Thanks for your great inspirational videos Sam.
Sam, have you ever thought of adding some sort of sculling oars on your boat? When the wind dies, you could make progress and get some exercise at the same time. Anyways, keep up the great work.
Sam, I have sailed these waters quite a bit, you need to carry more fuel on board(spot the obvious!) I have seen more wildlife there than I have ever seen in my life!! Greece is a challenge to sail, that’s why it’s so popular 👍👍
So, a new frying pan is on your Christmas wish list, then? 😊🤗👍. In spite of everything, it still looks like a great adventure. It’s always a great start to the day to see one of your videos! ❤❤
You should go to the Pacific Northwest. The islands make for great sailing and it is beautiful. If you go in the summer, it will be a nice 70-80 degrees.
If one of your engine mounts is screwed up it will affect all the others and lead to premature wear - best solution is renew all of them at the same time and then monitor to see if there is an issue unrelated to them.
Hey Sam I really the videos you put out ❤ but I am a little worried for you at times 😮. I have spent most of my adult life on the Pacific.Ive lost two of my friends on the ocean 😢. I watch you do things that remind me of them😢they were fearless.Be careful and respectful of the oceans 🙏.
I sailed for 15 years in the Mediteranean Sea and I can say having see the right sails is extremly important. Among all the sails you can have the diesel is the most important one, just before the storm sail. 😁 And remember, it took 10 years to Ulysses to do roughly 500 or 600NM.
use a washer and a hacksaw to make a "U" shaped spacer/spacers to put in the gap between the top nut and motor bracket then tighten the bottom nut up and pinch everything. you may have missed you calling on the juggling ever play with yoyo's?
Heading up to meet Ann... yeah I'd be in a hurry too she is such a class act. Sam those mounts are shot AND you need to get those bolts tightened down how in the hell do you expect to hold alignment otherwise? You know this shoulda been fixed back in Malta while you still had the boat in dry dock you didn't know about this?
Sam, love your videos and how you attack life head on. I will never do what you do so I'm enjoying your adventures while landlocked. I don't know what you use to record, but if I may make one small suggestion it would be to get some sort of wireless microphone with a wind sock. The crackle of the wind for those of us who are hard of hearing makes it difficult to hear what you say at times. That being said I still love your channel. Keep up the good work and be safe.
We have a list of things that we have lost in the ocean.... Lol I wish our boat was keel stepped so we could do some real ocean traveling. But our Catalina 30 has been a great boat for cruising the P.N.W Hi from Vancouver Island!
Sometimes, if needs must, you can put one adjustable spanner on the nut/bolt head vertically, then place your second adjustable spanner on your first spanner perpendicular to the first spanner axis, this can work when space for spanners is at a premium. (1st spanner adjusted to the flats of the nut vertically, not horizontally as per usual, then turn that spanner with the second spanner around the axis of the bolt/1st spanner as per usual)
I still love the sails still. Rolly Tasker offered to have them recut in Germany but I was too busy sailing to have it done. I’ve just got it connected under the boom as a temporary fix.
You are in the "doldrums". Out of 100% sailing, 35% horrific waves strong winds, 20% on the nose winds, 20% beautiful weather, gentle breezes from the stern, 25% no wind or variable winds or squalls. But very rarely two days the same.
Maybe more trouble than it's worth, but I wonder how difficult it would be to mount a small nozzle to spray the lens of your mast camera, then run a small supply tube down the mast where it could be connected to a portable pump you could use to give the lens a freshwater washdown.🤔
I'm about to buy a pearson 35 and head out across the Atlantic for a circumnavigation. You're one of the two channels that inspired me to do it. We will probably be seeing each other somewhere in the world at some point. 😅
Godspeed
thats wonderful. congrats. im on that same path.
Pearson 35 is an excellent boat, check the chain plates for corrosion. What year is she?
Fair winds
What was the other channel?
U TUBE has saved me thousands of dollars over the years on repairs I never would have tackled 👍👍
Agreed. Same here.
Me too!
It sometimes saves my butt by teaching me how to do my job.
I remember, trying to hurry up sailing to go meet a lass as well.
Sam, I like how you show us what you are cooking just for a brief amount of time. Unlike the other sailing videos that spend half their video showing their cooking skills and eating. Keep up the great work.
I appreciate that!
Another tough week of illness temporarily relieved by Sam’s smiling face and sailing adventures, many thanks 🙏
The first video of his I watched he was smiling in 5 meter swells en route to Hawaii. I would have been panicking but Sam was calm as can be 😊
You have balls of titanium. Your cheerful disposition in the face of so much adversity is admirable.
Thanks!
Working schedules not entirely in my control taught me the fine art of choosing who to disappoint each day.
Sam I’m so proud of you and your exploration. I’m proud to say I helped you work on Pickle for two days in Oriental. Keep up the great content.
Either Sam is very confident and competent in his capabilities ..... or naive ... and I suspect the former .... his attitude is always up beat regardless of the pending weather conditions ... its great to watch a sailing channel where the occupants aren't displaying stress and worry.
I vote for naive.
Easiest/cheapest way to get a better cell signal is to haul the phone up on a halyard and connect to it with BT/WiFi.
Great idea!
Or haul up an external antenna if you don’t want to risk the phone. But it’s a good temporary fix
Those calm days are paradise.
I really Enjoy watching you Channel, It take me back to my youthfull days sailing with my folks on holidays lol
26 minutes! Thanx dude.
Enjoy!

Sam sailing 900 miles to meet Ann-Elin, pretty cool! Go Sam!
You are such a goofball, in the best kind of way.
Over the years, you have made us laugh.
Never stop impressing me. Your "can do" spirit is a pleasure to watch.
Love your juggling Sam👍👍👍
Your videos are salty and raw. I love it!
I have become addicted to sailing again because of you and captain James. Unfortunately I’m only physically able to do lake and coastal sailing
You bad, Sam. Thanks for sharing your global sailing adventures.

@@samholmessailingit's nice to know that you have a "next boat" on your mind.
That’s a good lesson for Sam you need tools for your boat/yacht specially when you’re out to see like you are most of the time
Being positive .... your juggling is improving 😊😊
I had some free time.. 😄
I’ve been watching this channel for months and I finally got all caught up. Great stuff! Keep it up Sam!
... impressed with your juggling, excellent, sailings not bad either :)
Really beautiful soft morning.

Would some sort of prop under your bought with a generator help generate more power along with your solar panels? And maybe a little wind turbine?
Sam when you came up into the cockpit after the fist whack at the engine alignment you looked a bit like Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen!!
Best TH-camr ever. I love you Sam.
Thanks Sam. Always enjoy your videos.
Glad to hear it!
You deserve extra credits for climbing the mast with Crocs 😂
Love your videos and attitude!
Awesome video as usual that moon and the volcanic Wowza good job on that engine woop woop 😊
Woot, been excited for this one
Audio is good enough for me!
I'd say you are in a Pickle with those becalmed seas and broken motor mounts. Best of wishes Captain Sam!
Good luck, you're pushing the envelope , but from me I say Fair winds and Following seas!
He definitely pushes the envelope, to all our delight. We fear for him at times, but he's got this.

You and Eric are my favorites! Ann is adorable. Nobody in Europe call it Ocean, for us the Med is just The Sea
Croatia is a fantastic place to sail. Hope you get there.

22:30 shows the look (and sound) of a man calmed by the seas, both literally & figuratively 😃
If the nut doesn't tighten because of bad threads..but will come off you can add a couple of washers to tighten things up.
Maybe that’s it. Thanks!

the idea of “just look at it and get started” prevents most people from fixing most things themselves.
Sorry about the loss of your frying pan. If you were using that dynema line it is so slippery that a lot of knots just don't hold.
Your editor rocks
Thanks. I’m back to editing them myself until next season now

My boat has a deck stepped mast too. Nothing wrong with that. Less leaks
Best is to Align engine while boat is in the water.
Boat shape changes / flexes, in or out of the water.
Ya your motor mounts are toasted.
Thanks for the explanation
Ought you have put back the front window bolts into their holes in order to prevent water ingress in the holes?
Judging by the tool kit maybe a bit of the latter too 😂😊
love you keep cranking them out! you inspire me with your bravery or insanity?
I've been wondering if a security camera DVR setup would work for creating B-roll etc - an external audio recorder would be needed of course.
I would think Sam of all people would understand that being in a hurry and sailing are pretty much mutually incompatible states.
