- Israel is fighting for civilisation in a “seismic event” that will change both it and Jewish people in the diaspora, the journalist and author Melanie Phillips argued in London this week.
“Israel will survive this. It will have changed,” she said in a panel discussion at JW3 on Monday night that featured leading JC columnists and was chaired by the newspaper’s editor, Jake Wallis Simons.
But she added: “We cannot possibly say how it will have changed.”
What Israel had been experiencing since the “terrible day” of Hamas’ attack was an example “of a sickness in the world that has infected[…] the West”, she said.
“Israel is fighting for its survival. It is fighting for the life of its people. It is fighting for itself, but it is fighting an evil that has consumed much of the world.”

This is now weeks into the war. I am from Canada and I'm going to talk about things I have seen, heard and learned from the media sources I tend to trust. One thing I have noticed is a big difference in the reactions of Jews compared to the reactions of Palestinians when they lose a loved one in this terrible war. I have seen videos of reactions from Jewish fathers and mothers finding their children dead. The Jewish reaction is usually extreme grief, weeping and the sorrowful look of complete loss. I have seen the reactions of the Palestinians in videos in the same situations. I found that most of the time the Palestinians would scream and cry, but not weeping like the Jews. The Palestinians were crying and screaming in rage! They were not weeping for their loss of loved ones. I will try to look back and find the examples and post the links here.

What was also particularly disturbing is the way the massacres of Oct 7th were carried out as if it was a sport. And all filmed by the attackers themselves. I was shocked by the acts of vicious hatred carried out during the invasion and then horrified by those in the streets of my country, the UK, actually celebrating the attack. I can understand the many Muslims rejoicing at the death of Jews but the many useful idiots I saw supporting them in their pleasure at the thousands of deaths angered and saddened me in equal measure. No civilised person should ever rejoice in the death of those they oppose especially the death of babies, toddlers, elderly and disabled.

First of all, i am not Jewish. I am a middle-aged gay man who votes Tory and also is non-woke. I was in Oxford Street on the Saturday when the pro-Palestine march was going on. I was so angry and upset. I could hear them shouting kill the Jews. there was no police around but i was actually with my boyfriend shopping. It was intimidating. I saw a Jewish couple I just felt worried for their safety so I offered to walk with them. i was brought up in the East End of London so i am not one to back down. They told me they were intimidated and worried but what also struck me was that lots of people walked by and it was like they did not hear what people were shouting. Did not see one single police officer. I have never been on any march in my life but I was going to go to the pro-Israel match. Thank you to Melanie Philips and Douglas Murray who opened my eyes to longer-term issues that have been happening. I want the Jewish people to know you have a lot of support. Please donate to support Israel as they are coming for the Jews but be rest assured it will be us next. xxx
What you experienced was disgusting. All I can say is I am also gay and went on the pro Palestinian march with an estimated half a million people in London in November. There were also many Jewish people marching. Some placards said release the (Israeli) hostages plus stop bombing Gaza and they werent responded to aggressively. It was pretty inclusive and the only time there was trouble was when someone accidentally stepped on my foot and then apologised.
I am not trying to dismiss your negative experie ce, but please remember the wider picture of ongoing ethnic cleansing and occupation which breeds anger and resentment and led directly to the 7 Oct attacks. Also please remember the 20,000+ Gazans who are being bombed and starved to death as.part of Israels ongoing ethnic cleansing which is how the state of Israel was founded in the first place

I can't imagine AT ANY TIME Brits doing for their servicemen/women or even the displaced people what Israelis are doing for those most affected by this war - Today for instance I saw a shopping trolley FULL of donated goodies by the entrance of a supermarket , this trolley is replaced with an empty trolley a couple of times a DAY , there are groups of people donating Fridges , beds etc for those people who have had to leave their destroyed communities , pizza parlours delivering vehicles full of pizzas to the troops , the list goes on , and on .
( I am a British oleh of more than 30 years , so I have seen a lot of amazing things in this amazing country during my time here in Israel )

The Irish? They know what its like to be oppressed and treated like 2nd class citizens in their own country by a large bullying neighbour. That's why there is more sympathy for Palastinians in Ireland than anywhere else in Europe. And no, they don't need a lesson on the conflict by Phillips or any other myopic rightist. Philips and the right can keep their 'eye for an eye' logic. That's never going to solve this crisis. It'll just perpetuate the conflict for many more years.

There were one million Jews living in Arab countries prior to 1948. Today there are fewer than 5,000. These are the refugees no one talks about. There are more Arabs in Israel than there were in 1948 by a huge margin. Both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas insist that every square meter of land they control be 100% "judenrein" (except for hostages they've kidnapped).

The killing of 7,000 civilians in Gaza by Israel is not fighting evil, it is the definition of evil. Having the right to defend does not mean non stop murder of civilians.
