    It's been fucking wild to hear Vinny over the years go from talking about The Room like a normal "what the fuck is this movie" fan, to talking about Tommy and Greg as human beings and the behind the scenes weirdness, to meeting Tommy at a con, to talking about how The Disaster Artist was a fantastic book, to *INTERVIEWING GREG SESTERO* , to finally going "So, Greg Sestero wanted me to mention that he's doing this thing. Eh, I'm probably not going, but I said I'd let people know."

      But there is almost no plot. I don't blame them for the decisions yet, trying to add something to the gameplay, after all, doing stuff like playing VR gmod liminal maps keeps me very entertained but only up to a certain point. Plus, he's trying to make a healthy mix between backrooms as in empty infinite liminal places and story about going in and out and having creatures in. I also 100% prefer the first over the second but the amount of plot is so minimal I'm okay with it, plus, it gives excuses to create dangerous-looking backrooms that the main character has a reason to go through instead of turning back and trying to find a less dangerous route, because, there is none, he's just trying to find a way out

      Its strange, because I'm not sure what it's supposed to be. Without any actual urgency, it's really just a walking simulator. And having a walking simulator in neat environments is cool, but its hard to know when it overstays its welcome. When the point is everything looking the same, it's easy to feel like 'yea neat i get the idea, what's next?'
      Like people have been having a sufficient experience with this style of thing with literally single images. Sometimes the still angles give an even stronger liminal feeling, where the expansiveness makes it feel overly familiar and cozy. Like the line between the traditional semi uncomfortable liminal space experience becomes empty nostalgia instead

    • @d00gz_
      @d00gz_ ปีที่แล้ว +41

      It comes way too much from people attempting to manufacture the concept of “liminal space” and duplicate it, which almost always fails and completely misses the point of why liminal space is interesting in the first place.
      Liminal spaces can’t really be created, they can only come to exist on their own under a specific set of circumstances and characteristics. Attempting to describe and replicate it only serves to destroy the intrigue that it holds. Anyone can point at an empty mall and say “look, liminal so creepy”, but it’s a lot more than that.
      This game does a much better job at emulating the feel of a liminal space than other games I’ve seen/played. Not every part of the game elicits that feeling and just ends up feeling like a copy, but other parts (like sections of the indoor waterpark) did do a pretty good job at replicating it.

      @@d00gz_ I have to disagree on why manufactured liminal spaces often times don't work. It's not that a liminal space has to "occur naturally", it's that bringing intentionality into aspects of the design can break the illusion. Too often, liminal spaces are made to be a setting for a horror story, puzzle platformer, or grand conspiracy story. When someone designs a liminal space with those things in mind, the player/viewer can suss out those design choices because the illusion of "liminal" is so specific and fragile. It's made even worse when the media in question doesn't fully commit to those design choices, and you're left with half baked story/gameplay and the aforementioned "spooky empty mall, wow _so_ liminal 🙄" situation.

    Pretty sure I said this last time he played this but what the hell, I'll say it again.
    When I was a kid we would occasionally take vacations to the Wisconsin Dells during winter, when it's off season. There are plenty of small indoor pools to enjoy when the outdoor parks are closed. The lazy river section reminds me so heavily of those times. There were maybe one or two other families who would do the same thing, but for the most part it was just me and my brothers swimming. The specific pool I'm thinking of had an ancient jungle temple kind of theme. The fact that there was nobody else there made it so much more surreal.

      It's the inhumanity of the structure. I find myself fascinated by the architecture because it's like they take actual architectural features like lancet arches, valances, columns, deckways, and atriums, and then they just smudge them a bit. Just enough that if you know what they're aping you can go "Oh that's an [insert feature here]" but are otherwise just part of a monolith. Everything's sort of an off kilter jumble, and each store is a blast of colour trying to break through the sea of white noise to grab your attention.

    I think trying to add context and turning the liminal space/backrooms thing into games or other media kind of subtracts from what made them memorable and creepy to begin with. It’s a kind of feeling that probably can’t be sustained in a medium like that. It’s much more interesting, to me, to feel that dread and curiosity and unease all at once instead of wondering if the monster’s behind the next corner or not, or whether or not there’s a chance of escape, like slow-burn horror stuff is wont to do. Probably best that it stays in gmod and digital art.

      I think "uncanny" was and is a better name for them. These places are uncanny in much the same way things that resembles humans but aren't fall into the uncanny valley. • @gallusgallusdomesticus281
      @gallusgallusdomesticus281 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NicoNicoNessieSub I can see that. But also the idea behind surreal and abstract imagery is so broad and subjective that I dont see how using the term "Liminal" actually makes the concept easier to pin down. It just ends up being another word for "uncanny", and I think due to the words meme status it sort've in way made what counts as a "liminal space" into this hyper specific type of surreal environment.(Bathrooms, offices and the like) While a long time ago what counted as a surreal space was a lot more diverse.

    This game is pretty, but there's a lot of niceties it could have. Lot's of sound design improvements, like when you fall in the water, would be nicer to have a big satisfying sound, also the sound to be different underwater. The sound of you getting out of the water, slapping your ape feet on the deck, and water dripping from your clothes. The sound and action of jumping on the diving board, the sound and visuals of the water sprayers, a nicer animation of the water spewing out. Stuff like that really makes a game amazing. I think if you're gonna make one of these wet liminal space games, sound should be as big of a focus as the fancy visuals.

    I think liminal spaces are a tired trend and I roll my eyes whenever I hear of the "backrooms", but I was actually pleasantly surprised by this game. And I'd say it's probably because it's actually kinda comfortable in a way, it's pretty nice to walk around in some of these environments. Because of that, I kinda feel like this game should have just been linear instead of having this hub world with a kinda unnecessary ticket system, in order to have a more focused and purposeful structure in between levels. I've always thought that the horror aspect of liminal spaces was something very frequently failed (which made the genre so tired), so I was pleased to see that the game be subtle with it, with no evil super duper creepy monster chasing you or some overarching conspiracy plot explaining why this liminal space exists. IMO there's absolutely no need for an explanation for liminal spaces. Just let them exist and be their own thing.
    Of course, that's until the ending plays. I won't say it "ruined" the game, cause that's a strong word (my memory of the rest of the game is still positive) but it was really disappointing to see that what the creator had in mind all along was just the same lame garbage we've always been seeing from liminal spaces. Of fucking course there's gotta be a story to this place. It can't just be an exploration game with a cool atmosphere. The fucking Marvel post-credits-like dialogue really seals the deal. Every liminal space fan ultimately has the same goddamn brain. All we can do now is pray that the story in Chapter 2 will be sparse enough so we can continue pretending it doesn't exist.

    • @scrittle
      @scrittle ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I made a long comment on BadassHero's gameplay on how disappointing this game is. The demo was absolutely amazing! Sure it was a walking simulator with a few black figures here and there, but the look and feeling was something I've been wanting to see in Backrooms games for the last few years.
      Unfortunately, chapter 1 gives us a badly designed mall that isn't big enough to be considered liminal, and the elevator mechanic is ripped from another Backrooms game Vinny played, except in that game it was utilised properly. I shouldn't get worked up over this again, but the dev had promise. Following the trends, it seems the dev will probably steal even more elements from other backrooms games, probably because they ran out of good ideas after constructing the poolrooms. Expect a tall noodle monster to run from in the next chapter, it'll happen given the path this game is walking.
      It's no longer liminal because we know it's inhabited, hence the mood of this game is ruined.

    Isn't the entire point of a liminal space to be unsettling, unknowable and generally uncanny? Doesn't the necessity to "solve" these spaces remove their inherent abnormality by turning them into puzzles or problems instead of environments to experience and, by their very nature, be disturbed by? Like, the entire point of a "liminal space" is that it's familiar, but one step removed, which is why they're disturbing. "Gamifying" something of that nature just seems to defeat its purpose entirely. It's one thing to experience the space by existing in it, maybe even discovering an "exit," but to encapsulate it with the trappings of menu-driven puzzles just feels like it turns it into something else entirely. If you removed the Portals from Portal, would you have a liminal space game?

    • @Yohoat
      @Yohoat ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My thoughts exactly. This appears to just be a fairly shallow puzzle(?) game with too much empty space. I think the balance would have to be making a cryptic puzzle game in the vain of P.T. to capitalize on the sense of mystery and intrigue. Less telegraphed progression would make you question everything and force you into a sense of uncertainty.
