I bought a large white trunk to store my infant niece’s stuff in th-cam.com/users/postUgkxNuLbiXpLQ-mKH5NlyjrNe88hiCk2N3Cg , as she comes to my house frequently. For now, it’s toys on one side and diapers, wipes, and other baby care items on the other. As she gets older, it will be all toys. I had originally wanted a trunk with a hinged lid, but I was afraid of her smashing or pinching her fingers in it. This will be a much safer option. The lid has great padding in it and it is actually nice to sit on. It feels very sturdy and secure. Looks like it can be wiped clean easily. If it gets abused by her, I won’t be terribly upset because I paid less than $50 for it on Prime Day.

I have a marshmallow sofa. Let me tell you why it is my favourite one: because when I arrive home tired and want to rest while watching the tele, listening to music or reading, it is by far the most comfortable of them all. My body loves its softness, and being able to lift my legs makes the recliner a piece of heaven. My other sofa, which is like the ones you recommend, gets only used when having a coffee with a friend. It's good for a chat, and to look at, but not for a true rest. My parents have a Chesterfield sofa... far too hard for me. I guess it all depends of what the person wants the sofa for.

We just recently purchased a Marshmallow style sofa and loveseat but in a dark brown leather. I think it's called cat Naper. We all love it! Not very fancy looking but SUPER comfortable. I prefer comfort over style. We enjoy the time we spend at home relaxing and watching movies as a family on our puffy couch. I got a lot of criticism from friends saying that they were to ugly and bulky. My response was: "I furnish my home to my comfort and pleasure not to please others"😆

Buying a sofa, is a different experience for everyone. No one should be able to tell you what type or style of sofa you should buy, you should buy it based on how you want it to function. Are you using it in front of a TV? Then you should go for comfort, sacrifice some style if you have to, to achieve this, in the long run, the comfort aspect will by far outweigh any style aspects. If you are using the sofa as more of a focal piece, then yes, you should concentrate on the style aspect, and blend the style of the sofa to its surroundings. I have seen far too many people focus on the style of a sofa, then are disappointed when they go to live in it, and its not comfortable. Remember, we live in our homes, you can often find comfort at the end of a long day on your sofa. Its great if its a show piece, but sometimes the only way to get the comfort you deserve, is to be willing to sacrifice a little style.

Jim Baker thanks for your comment. I run a class on making over your home and most of my subscribers are looking for honest design advice that will get them out of their rut. I am a real designer and give real solutions to my clients that look and feel good. So no hideous sofas. Lol

You are absolutely right about sectional sofas. Guests do not want to sit directly next to you and even having a loveseat adjacent to the sofa can still be too close for comfort. That is why I have a small Chesterfield sofa which is only 77" wide and two lounge chairs that sit across from the sofa. Guests prefer their own chair because it grants them personal space. Also, I have learned that if people perceive any obstacle between them and the door, it will subconsciously invoke feelings of anxiety, (people feel safer when they know they can quickly exit a space) so, I have positioned the chairs to somewhat face the front door. My guests naturally go for the chairs, every time.

Between multiple door openings, a sliding glass door, and a fireplace there is basically only one long wall where we can put furniture in the living room without making it awkward to walk around. We went with a long sectional with the chaise lounge on the end. I seriously love this style. It's both cozy and attractive. Agree with the marshmallow sofa, I don't even find them that comfortable to be honest.

I've broken all 3 rules then, and happily so. Our marshmallow sofa is a massive 5 pc modular sectional. Each unit is wide enough to seat 2 ppl and long enough that the back of your legs are fully supported no matter how tall you are. Also they tend to offer more height so 6 ft ppl can sit back with shoulder support. The depth and height is such that you sit without feeling like you're sinking too deep, yet with enough recoil to not leave butt prints. You can seat 8 ppl on it comfortably with space & it can be turned into a U, L, and a box ... or separated into pairs, threes, or singular units. We have had many sleepover & Netflix parties where everyone was able to lay down with blankets. I have far more versatility bc it is modular. I've even separated my 5 pc to where I've taken 2 to put by the entryway & the other 3 in front of the TV. I've then, also put 2 pairs of sofas facing each other to make guest beds when guests sleepover. It also is stain-resistant & hasn't sunk down even though we use our couch far more than our beds. It's been 6 yrs ownership so far. I'm just upset that they no longer sell these at my furniture store, bc I'd love a different color for the basement of our future home.

I totally agree! I have always owned antiques and current pieces. I've NEVER owned a sectional and while I do own a love seat, it is used in a master bedroom sitting area; NOT with my leather sofa in the living room. My antiques always remain (since 1980) and as styles change I update with upholstery (on the antiques when needed) and my accent / current pieces I "work in" . Everyone loves our home and feels comfortable in it. I love ❤️ watching your videos and great advice. Keep sharing!

Watching this from my incredibly comfortable and stylish sleek U-shaped sectional. It cleverly pulls out to a 2-person bed, my brother and his GF live abroad and they occasionally stay over. And it fits as if it’s custom made. My living room is L-shaped, it fits in the short part of the L.
4-5 people can sit and still hold a conversation, more than that, and it’s just seating. My ex and I got this one, because we wanted to both be able to lounge, legs stretched out, etc.
Different strokes for different folks, the most important thing about your house, is that it makes you happy. Not what’s dictated by trends.
I happen to love calm interiors with white and earth tones and natural materials with little pops of color. People who like bright furniture and rooms stuffed to the brim, might hate my house. But that’s fine.
Have to admit, your video titles are very off putting. Makes you look like a know it all.

It is basic advice but common mistakes. My perfect go to layout is a large comfy sofa, a statement chair and a smaller chair or pouf or ottoman that can be adaptable between leg rest or something to perch on. That way you have a really adaptable layout between the 2 of you flopping out in front of Netflix and more formal social situations like a dinner party where you can have people seated and have drinks without feeling hemmed in. Another trick is to have a mis match dining table, 6 chairs, 2 of 3 designs that contrast and complement each other. That way, if you need more seating space you can pull across a chair without it looking like your pulled something from a dining suite.

Really the problem with all sofas is that they are poorly designed and quality and comfort are not considered. A sofa is more and more expensive investment everyday! Stores carry the so called marshmallow furniture for one reason only THEY SELL. The reason they sell is because of comfort and durability. Of course of speaking of the quality marshmallow sofas. The average life span of a sofa is ten years in an active family of five. Now I'm not a furniture designer but wouldn't the furniture designers not take notice and use the the marshmallow sofa as an example or jumping of point to designing new an innovated sofas for mass production so we can get the best of both worlds. I agree I'm so past the sofa love seat and chair phase but unfortunately furniture stores are not. It's frustrating tomboy a sofa now a days because designers are so behind the needs of the customers they are trying to sell to.

I am an interior designer and I typically try to steer my clients away from sectionals for the very reasons you listed. People are comfortable sitting on the ends of sofas, not the middle and the corner of a sectional is a total waste of space. I much prefer two sofas or a sofa and accent chairs (as you mentioned). No one wants to sit like birds on a wire. I do have to say, those who like "marshmallow" sofas because they are comfortable and loungy likely won't like a chesterfield. While classic and beautiful, a chesterfield style sofa is not a lounging sofa as it has a low stiff back. I would recommend they replace the marshmallow with something like a bridgewater or lawson style sofa.

I am selling my five seater leather chaise and ottoman. I bought it because we have a narrow lounge room, and because the ottoman pushed in created a double bed for extra guests. But in effect it was a two seater or lounging chaise because you are right people do not sit side by side to talk.
I have ordered a two seater, two recliners and two occasional chairs. The are all modest in proportions and as you said easy to move and adapt to social situations. I will be able to seat six, one per sleeping position. I am looking see if I can get an accent chair on wheels that can do double duty as extra seating and office chair.

Dave I understand a man's need for comfort, believe me, you can be comfortable in less puffy furniture. Currently, I'm decorating a bachelor's newly renovated home. We collaborated on the renovations, all very basic and neutral. He wanted his old puffy sectional and recliner back in his newly renoed living space. The space was cramped, he was pleased. 2 weeks later I was back at his house as I knew I would be. For some reason that puffy furniture ate up all the space. Now he's very comfortable and happy w/ scaled down seating. Once again, leave it to the ladies, we know how to please men.

I didn't think I was going to like the video but I actually do. It's just that many of us are stuck with what we have. I'm using the dark blueish leather sofa and loveseat my husband bought before we got married. Not something I would have picked out but I made it work using a misture of throw pillows, chrome lamps, and I recovered an ottoman that added a modern/eclectic look. I also have a white puffy leather reclyner which is a must have for the hubby, and two black and white armless chairs that I adore. I use the love seat in another room with two soft, beige arm chairs because it was just too much furniture for the living room. I wish I could post photos here because I'm pleased with the look of both rooms JUST USING WHAT I HAD. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT.

Loved your video and found your comments valuable. I have modified marshmallows and they are driving me nuts. I've been looking for a sectional but for the very reasons you stated I don't think any sectional is going to work in my room. And I do not want the matchy-matchy look either. As for the extremely rude comments below, people are so incredibly insecure that they take your strong opinions as attacks on their personal style and choices. All designers have strong opinions -- both fashion and interior designers. They all talk like you, making strong statements about what's in or what's out, or whatever. You did clearly state that you know your sofa style is not for every one. Did people not hear that? I have seen several of your videos and you have never come off as pretentious to me. Artsy and opinionated, yes. Pretentious, no. There is some kind of strange and totally unjustified hating type of vibe going on in the comments below. Please ignore that stuff. A chaise longue has nothing to do with a dude named chase, and while it can be lounged in, the “longue” simply means “long”, not “lounge”. It is simply and quite literally a long chair.

Formal living room vs Family room. I agree with many of the comments below on both sides, but many are commenting on 2 completely different rooms and styles. Blending the 2 styles into one room is the tricky part and the reason for the comments below. When designing a room, try to consider as many different options as possible. Some rooms are limited on size and layout options, but many times smaller, more flexible furniture is a better choice. Also consider how often you plan to replace the furniture. Are you looking to replace 5, 10, or even 20 years? Do you plan on purchasing a different home in the near future? We were forced to let go an insanely expensive piece of furniture because it literally didn’t fit in our new home. We currently have a massive mirror sitting in our garage wrapped in bubble wrap and moving blankets because we can’t find a way to make it work in our new home either. Take your time, consider many styles. When in the showroom, don’t just jump from one piece to the other. Get settled in and see how the piece feels. It is likely a very expensive purchase and you certainly don’t watch to rush this decision. I would suggest keeping your large pieces neutral and accent with trendy rather than getting stuck with outdated furniture. We have owned many homes over the years and have been through this many times. As I write this, we are currently looking to redesign yet again. Hope this helps. Good luck everyone.

I think your living room is lovely! I am currently furniture shopping at the moment and am in love with the idea of a chesterfeild sofa! I want something comfortable, but I HATE those awful marshmallow couches..I feel like you nailed it when you said it's hard to figure out just exactly what style they are. The problem I am having is choosing two pieces of comfortable furniture that go nicely together, and can also seat everyone in a comfy way. I don't want to do matchy matchy, but I need either 2 couches or 1 couch and a loveseat for my space. We currently have a large couch and a chair. When it comes time to all sit together and watch tv...no one wants the lone chair. Also my kids like to lay down on the couch and hog it, and sometimes so do I..so again no one wants the chair. I but'd really like to do a couch and decent length loveseat, but I'm not sure what to pair together without being matchy matchy..which I'm not a fan of, but also not look off together. Suggestions??

I want to follow your advice soooo bad it's killing me! My husband and I have serious back injuries and therefore need the reclining sofa. I wish we did not because I love interior design and have hated the look of every reclining sofa I've endlessly shopped for and own. It's simply a necessity for us. I personally worked so hard when I was younger I litterally blew out the disc in my back...my husband jumped out of one too many airplanes serving our country sooo now even though our home is gorgeous our sofa is truly a eyesore (hate hate hate the look of these monstrosities) however OMG what a relief to people like us who suffer from chronic pain! It's worth having a ugly couch when it actually provides some pain relief :) love you and your videos Baiyna! Just wanted you to know why some of us actually have no choice in this particular interior design topic.

I like my "marshmallow" couch. I'd much rather be comfortable then have a fancy looking living room. Maybe if you're rich and have 3 different living rooms you might style the main one but for normal people who like to lay back and relax those couches you recommended look sooo uncomfortable..

Jeff Vader Old comment, but Yes!!! I agree! While watching I was wondering if she ever even sits on hers or if it is just pretty to look at & film in front of. My other thought was she must not have a home full of children and pets. I have a living room with furniture that allows us to hang out as a family and enjoy our time comfortably. I absolutely refuse to buy furniture just because it is beautiful. I won't get anything just because it's beautiful if it is also impractical.

@@cmi7439 it may end up looking beige.. Lol. I love white sofas. I think they're gorgeous. But even having light cream colored leather seats in my car is a hassle to keep clean. Jeans dye rubs off on it... Even my hair dye will rub off on it if I lean against the head rest. So I can't imagine a white sofa would fare any better. Especially with a teenager!

Love your videos! I might add on the sofa suggestions: some of us need a sofa with non fabric covered arms and base- with cushions you can recover in time if needed. This is a must for cat owners and sometimes those with dogs and small children. Also, of course if you have any of those- white is a no go! Just a suggestion to consider in the future. Thanks for all your suggestions and decor help!!

Great tips! For sure the number #1 ugliest sofa IS 100% the "marshmallow sofa" hahahaha! Not sure when these were ever in style but yeah, usually when you see one it is in some outdated house with zero style and they always look squashed and sloppy. Not sure I agree with #2 and 3# though. I think it depends on the size and layout of your space. I have seen u-shaped and matching sets look great in larger rooms where they don't compete or look make the room look cramped.
I just got a new sofa and went with a boxy L-shaped sectional that has an ottoman, so it can become a u-shape or an L-shape. I went with a mid-century-modern shape that is really square with plain legs. It works well with a lot of looks and I am having fun with it. I am not into anything traditional, so I knew I couldn't go wrong with my choice. A sofa IS a huge commitment and these are great tips if you have a small space.
I would have added #4 ANY flowered sofa, to this list. It doesn't matter what decade the flowers are from, in 5 to 10 years it will be out of style. Today's trendy prints will become tomorrow's vomit green 70's prints, ugly pastel faux "Victorian" 80's prints and 90's mishmash prints. It is VERY rare that a flower print comes back into fashion and if it does, it usually looks ugly all over a sofa! So yeah...My advice is: Skip the prints on your sofa and instead, try prints on your pillows or side chairs. Those need to be replaced more often anyway and cost less than a sofa. For most spaces, these are really good tips. I give this video a big thumbs up!

A sofa does not always have to placed against the wall. Sometimes furniture placed against the wall looks like it's under arrest. Floating a sofa can be a nice placement. My sofa floats with a nice credenza behind it and room for walking between the two. (Floating means furniture not placed against walls. A term we use in interior design). Just a suggestion some of you may like to try!
