    • @MyFocusVaries

      Affordable is relative. When we bought our first house almost 17 years ago, I TREMBLED at how much we spent. But it was such as classic style, and it has a hardwood frame with leather upholstery so it stood up to our son jumping and eating (and full disclosure, vomiting), that I'm only now looking at replacing it. So if you can save up and spend more, you won't be re-buying a couch every two years, so the couch will be affordable in the long term.

    There are some basic comfort things to watch for as well, like depth of couch front to back - shorter people would probably feel more comfortable with a less deep sofa so that their back is on the backrest and the front edge of the sofa roughly lines up with the backs of their knees.
    A tall household might not enjoy all their furniture having low backrests, etc etc.

    • @te7270
      @te7270 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes! Cheap seating is often way too short for the thighs, or made for short people of the colonial era? 😆 taller people need that back and neck support, depth, not sunken low seating either! And older folks find it harder to get out of low seating, truly the “pits”.

      N pilate, YAAAAS! Try a flat sheet folded a few times of completely laid out to envision the feel of it. You want to make sure it has the front feet of sofa and chairs along it’s perimeter otherwise it looks like my moms taste 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤷‍♂️.
      Another rule for rugs that I have is consider ordering DuPont stain master higher end carpet and have it cut/bound by the store you order at (big box, online, specialty, etc). You want it to last and stand up to pets, people, nick when he comes over lol.
      Last advice is leave one foot of flooring all around the space and let the rug be large enough to encase that much space in any formal living area that is enclosed mostly or a bedroom. It works in choppy/walled in spaces more than open concept. It will really dampen the noise! And a robot vacuum will keep it clean without any work on your part! They come with WiFi app enabled technology to run when you aren’t home.

    • @rikwen96
      @rikwen96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@juliananton7800 Thanks for reminding me about area rugs that you can buy and have bound at the store. I had a remnant done that way in my college/early career years. That rug held up through lots of moves, cleaned up from all sorts of stains and was a one of a kind piece. I am going to need to add an area rug to my living room space. This reminder will let me go look at a wider range of styles and colors than what one finds at the local box store.

Coming home to beauty and practicality on a budget for high end furniture (btw I used to work in a furniture showroom for very high end quality! I can attest you MUST invest in it! It pays for itself and my family who worked for said company in the 1960s MCM glam era still have their pieces!) article folks is hands down the best thing for fair price and high end durability.

    Thank you. I suggest another important tip: structure. The form and proportions matter a lot, not just seat height & depth, etc but also the main features. For example I realized all the sofas I liked had legs, lifting the seat base as far way from the floor as possible (without compromising quality), and I hated all those "heavy" blocks that seem to sit on the floor, or those skirted ones that could hide a nightmare instead of letting some air flow.

    I bought a sofa from a company called Highland House. I bought the sofa and loveseat. In addition to that, I cleaned an office and two restrooms for TWO YEARS to pay for these pieces. I want to say that it was around $5,800 for the two pieces and that’s a whole hell of a lot of money for my salary range, YET, IT WAS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD!! This company and product was amazing. I had trouble with one core (cushion) losing its shape about six years into owning. I called the company to inquire about purchasing the inside (core) and they sent me the one at no charge. TEN years I owned that sofa, and would buy from them again any day. This is a true story.

    maybe ad in some information about:
    - Choice of fabric and practicalities (dirt, touch to the skin, etc.)
    - Choice of foam inside the sofa (durability, dints, etc.)
    - Use it to actively sit or to lounge
    - Hight of couches (e.g. related to a window and indowsill that might be behind it)
    - Space between the seating area and the floor (in terms of making the room look more pacious or not and vaccuum cleaning).
    - Horizontal and vertical lines in a sofa. I have seen sofa's that are quite wide and have low arm rests, but the pillows of the back are long and high. So the vertical and horizontal are a bit conflicting.

    The measuring tip at 2:30, making sure the sofa will work well in the space that you have, is good advice...I would also add: make sure it will fit through your doorway :)

    Id also recommend checking out your city for furniture makers! I live in Texas and found a couch maker/wholesaler to create the perfect design for my home. They gave me the ability to choose everything from the shape, size down to the inch, fabric, color, cushion softness all for the same price (or cheaper) of a Article or CB2.

    One sofa you didn't review was a "cat-proof" one!!! Fur, snags, crushed cushions etc. If you find anything in this category, please let me know!!!!! Love your videos; really helpful (and entertaining!) And, the performance velvet doesn’t stain when the beasts toss their hair balls on the couch!! No water marks from cleaning. This stuff must be made by NASA!!!!

      Very individual to the cat and their scratching tendencies, but I find pleather/leather, velvet, and microfibre to be textures the cat won't scratch. Don't make my mistake of getting my first couch in tweed - basically a giant scratching post in that material hehe.

      I know that problem. I am pretty happy with my Söderhamn couch from Ikea. It is not the greatest quality, but definitely worth the price. The Samsta and the Finnsta fabrics (I have both) are both pretty smooth so the fur doesn't get caught on it and with the Finnsta fabric, if my cats do scratch on it and pull a thread I can pull that thread back in. Also you can buy seperate covers for the like the armchairs and switch them out if they get too scratched up. Also it is pretty easy to buy different covers even if Ikea discontinues that couch, because there are other companies that sell them.

    I love the final sofa. It reminds me of the sofa (in the study??) at Eltham Palace in London. It was a medieval palace extended and refurbished in 1920s Art Deco style. It’s an English Heritage property so I’m sure there’s pictures out there. In our (generally) smaller British homes we have to have our furniture pushed back to the walls, otherwise we’d be knocking knees! Having said that the styles you showed didn’t seem as big as the marshmallow type, so an ideal video and choice for us. Ta!

    Love this! Super helpful since I am in the market for a couch. It would be so interesting to see a video for difficult rooms and how to design them and find a functional layout. For example my living room is a long rectangle shape. One short wall is a fireplace with library shelves, one long wall has a very large window that’s almost ceiling to floor and take up most of that wall space, the other long wall has the 2 openings for the kitchen and the dining room so it’s a partial wall to work with, and the other short wall are the stairs (quad level home, one set of stairs goes down, one set goes up). It’s proving difficult to position furniture! I really appreciate your videos! Keep em coming!

      Secondhand finds much better quality (has good “bones”). And yes reupholstery can be the answer however older furniture that is in good condition will have better upholstery than what you find today. Fabric quality is crap everywhere you look. I mourn the loss of US-made fabrics, back when warp and woof and thread thickness was unbeatable.
