I really appreciate you getting straight into it. You explained all this really clearly, thank you. Do you think you could do a similar video to show which style couch goes with various interior designs, such as Scandi, Japandi, minimalism, etc?
Very good! Who knew there were so many kinds of sofa’s. You did an excellent job of explaining and showing what they are. I now know what to shop for to put in my new apartment. Thank you!
They’re sooooo comfortable though 🤤 In the world of Netflix binge watching, there’s simply no other option (but yes, most of them look like 4 lazy boy chairs melted together 😂)
06:38 Madame de récamier's recamier is actually kept in chateaubriand's house in La Vallée au Loup, south of Paris & it even still has its old upholstery ! I know because I was there last week :p though the painting is indeed in the Louvre
Thank you for your concise, informative style videos. No waiting for the BLah Blah, to finish! Phew. I have lived in Canada and the UK, (Scotland and England). I just thought all those names were interchangeable! I would hear the word “Chesterfield” quite a bit in Canada. At home growing up in the south east of England we often used Settee and Sofa interchangeably. Seemed to distinguish this item from the arm chair. Thanks for making all these distinctions for us. Also helpful as we are now shopping for a new “Sofa”, helpful to know this might be considered the umbrella term!
What a GREAT service this is to those of us who always wondered about all things sofas! I’m so glad I watched this before making my selection…there were so many additional styles I never considered! Thank you!!! 😊
So interesting. I just found you today and really appreciate the way you present material. I have no eye for decorating and keep thinking someone, somewhere, book, class, etc will explain the trick, haha. You are actually coming the closest. Also, one of my grandmothers was California born and bred and every sofa was a chesterfield, haha.
This was a cool rundown. I have been looking for sofas that are super comfy and you can nap on if needed. I like recliners but man they really can be god awful to look at. Lol. I have a small space so thinking a loveseat but need comfort and higher off the ground due to arthritis. It’s a tall order to figure out.
This was great! Can you do a video on sofas that are low to the ground? Like western versions of Middle Eastern floor seating and I believe there's a Japanese style of floor seating as well! I love the comfortable floor seats that go all the way around a room but I keep looking for inspiration on how to modernize and minimize is for my everyday American life!
Thanks a lot, that was very instructive. So I now learned that the Klipan, that classic (and in my eyes very "bauhausy") IKEA staple is to be considered as a "tuxedo" .... love it.
The one advantage to a reclining sofa is, if you’re short, or have short legs, they can be more comfortable than non-reclining sofas. I agree with you on style (or lack of), though.
I think mid-century modern is the most comfortable for "petite" people. My feet rarely touch the ground on most furniture, very uncomfortable. Can you recommend a "decorating style" quiz, or perhaps provide one? Thanks!
Didn’t know all these things about sofas! Now every time I’ll step into a room I will try to find out what type of sofa my friends have 😅 very interesting!! Loved this video 😍
My favorite type of sofa is definitely Mid-Century Modern. I have a particularly strong fixation on the more iconic models. I currently have an LC3 Sofa from Manhattan Home Design and I love its tan leather upholstery, minimalist design and dense cushions.
I'm pretty stingy with my subs, but you had me when you inferred you were Canadian. I am in BC. And of course this video is awesome, because people throw these names around and it's really great to see the term defined spelled out with pictures and an interesting explanation. So thank you very much. I will be following.
I loved this video-very well explained and presented! I love stylish sofas and want to decorate my living room with a nod to art deco since that was when the house was built but my husband wants a recliner 😭
Great video. I had a chesterfield, but gave it away. I thought I wanted it, but it didn't go with my esthetic. I like the English roll arm or the Lawson for my room anyway. They're all really lovely though. Thank you for explaining them all so well.
Thank you! This is so informative and entertaining! 😍 I hope you do one for beds as well (I'd ask for chairs too but there is a shocking amount of types 😅)
I know its weird, but personally I hate the look of basically all couches. I love the comfort, but I have never bought one, because I can't stand the thought of having something so bulky in my house. Just thinking about it makes me anxious. I watched this video in hopes that I could learn something new, and I did! I think that I'll only consider modular options from now on, since they can be spread apart and configured in different ways. Also, I think chaise lounges are my friends. Of all the example photos in the video, 5:45 appealed to me the most. I love the openness, and how the legs keep it from looking bulky or from cutting off the flow of the space. Much to think about. ☺
Posh Pennies is a master of disguise. She looks like a different person in almost all the videos. And I did love her jab at those form over function reclining sofas. Form over function was the kindest thing I could come up with :-)
You have it backwards. They are function over form. They are more practical than pretty. They're for TV watching. They get that job done better than any of the other sofas.
Excellent and funny as always... but what of the "Davenport"? We added a Tuxedo in the place of a recommended Davenport per a 1941 Good Housekeeping book to fit our 1939 home because of the similar slimming effect you highlighted, vs the Chesterfield ... Or is a Davenport within the Chesterfield family? Thanks so much
Everyone doesn’t know what a love seat is actually. In Australia we have two seater sofas or couches. Buying my first sofa in America, assumed a love seat was some Disneyesque concoction, and steered well clear:). Lovely, polished video btw.
In the ‘90s, I bought what is essentially an English roll arm sofa from a mom-and-pop furniture store where I was able to choose the upholstery. It differs from a traditional English roll arm in that it has tall, thick rolled arms that flare out somewhat. It has a single bench seat cushion and a tight back with a big dip in the center, which was popular at the time. It’s sort of a camelback in reverse. It is big, chunky, and comfortable and I bought a matching chair and ottoman to go with it. I got all three pieces for $500.00. It has held up beautifully. I’ve only had it reupholstered once (in a different color velvet) and switched out the original modern-style wooden legs with more traditional ones. It sort of screams “1990s” but in a good way. ❤
What are your feelings on couch covers? Do you think you could buy a bolder couch color and then later cover it with a neutral cover if you got bored of it or is this not recommended?
Great video, I love the Togo sofa. But, my friend found it 1st and got it before I could. I don't want to copy aka bite off of him. Would you be able to provide 3 other alternatives similar to this style and design? Keep up the great content, I'm reno...ing a small condo I've just closed on and I have great ideas. Now, I've got to make it come alive. Thanks!!!
The manufacturers of recliners have streamlined some of them so that they are smaller, no overstuffing, tailored. So why can’t they/haven’t they done the same to recliner sofas? I’ve enjoyed one of those smaller recliners for more than 20 years, but have never seen a reclining sofa that doesn’t look like the Michelin Man. I’m no artist or designer, but I can easily visualize my own chair stretched out. If anyone knows of these, I’d love to hear about them. 😃
They do have some styles that are more streamlined and slimmer but it is especially difficult to make them like that because of the inside components that make them comfortable and practical.
It is called an Anglicized word. A word which the pronunciation was modified to suit the English language. Happens with any language and it is very common. I do pronounce in the original form but also in the modified, depending on the audience.
My preference in sofas have always been a 'structured' low profile sofa, clean cut and always on legs, opposed to down to the ground (I suppose a mid-century type model). I have previously owned 3 leather sofas (the last one being great for my late dog has an energetic and mischievous puppy!) but I would never buy one now. I tend to find those large, puffy (what I call 'teddy bear' sofas quite oversized and ugly. The last 3 fabric sofas I have had, have all been made by the same UK company, the same model, but different colours and the internal hardwood frame has never let me down. The company also let you customise their sofas both size and even removing or adding different elements to them at a low additional cost.
Hey thank you for your videos! Could you do a video on how to decorate rooms that have dark carpeting? I live in a studio with a dark gray carpet and have no idea how to style it apart from blac and white, but I want to add color (maybe brown) to it. Thank you! :)
Ok so all that info was well done…except for futons… Please since everyone seems to be downsizing show ( when U can) much more info on futons and space saving ideas…. BTW … Im now officially Subscribed!!🎈✨🎈
I think that would be subjective. Depends on your height, proportion of your body, weight, what kind of comfort you’re looking for (sturdy back support vs sink-in cushy, for example). I never understood people who buy sofas (or chairs) online.
That "language is hard" was a subtle (yes I know that word!) diss at us Amurricans wasn't it!! I'm way too smarter for you than you are, posh pennies!! LOL Wonderful video!
There's just something quintessentially American about having a huge recliner sofa, in the same way it is to have a huge cardboard suburban house with fake shutters and a pickup truck.
This was so well researched and presented. And funny.
I really appreciate you getting straight into it. You explained all this really clearly, thank you. Do you think you could do a similar video to show which style couch goes with various interior designs, such as Scandi, Japandi, minimalism, etc?
Mid century modern for sure is similar to Scandinavian
YES!!! I’d love this type of video too.😊
I love design history!! Your French accent is very good. The last sofa example was too funny.
Very good! Who knew there were so many kinds of sofa’s. You did an excellent job of explaining and showing what they are. I now know what to shop for to put in my new apartment. Thank you!
I never knew how hated recliners were until I started trying to understand interior design 😅
They’re sooooo comfortable though 🤤
In the world of Netflix binge watching, there’s simply no other option (but yes, most of them look like 4 lazy boy chairs melted together 😂)
I like them better than I like tripping over an ottoman. The more practical something is the more likely the snobbish attitudes will pop up.
It is not because it is practical, which is always a bonus in interior decor but it is that they are ugly AF@@MilwaukeeWoman

It's the middle of the night... and I can't stop watching your videos!
I always learn so much from you. I can now say I love a tuxedo sofa, but in crazy colors like emerald green or pink! Gracias!
So educational for those of us who have not been to design school. ❤
This was great! Can you do a video on sofas that are low to the ground? Like western versions of Middle Eastern floor seating and I believe there's a Japanese style of floor seating as well!

Always wanted a Chesterfield, I have it now and will not change it till I die.
Is it super comfortable and what company did you go with?
Thanks a lot, that was very instructive. So I now learned that the Klipan, that classic (and in my eyes very "bauhausy") IKEA staple is to be considered as a "tuxedo" .... love it.
This is such a great presentation !! Also as a french I never thought about longue being lounge, great little FYI.
Once again a bang up job! You even included a recliner couch! No designer would do that! What a hoot.
The one advantage to a reclining sofa is, if you’re short, or have short legs, they can be more comfortable than non-reclining sofas. I agree with you on style (or lack of), though.

We've all seen these sofas, so it's good to put a real name to them!
Getting my sofa knowledge game up to impress all the pretty ladies at Raymour & Ashley 😂😂😂
Thank you! This is so informative and entertaining! 😍 I hope you do one for beds as well (I'd ask for chairs too but there is a shocking amount of types 😅)
Great information. The last part was funny!
I know its weird, but personally I hate the look of basically all couches. I love the comfort, but I have never bought one, because I can't stand the thought of having something so bulky in my house. Just thinking about it makes me anxious.

I love a nice distressed-leather Chesterfield. I almost bought one. The only drawback is you can’t lean your head back. 😬
this was amazingly informative and exactly what I was looking to find out!!! thank you.
I had no idea that couches... sofas... chesterfields etc were not interchangeable words!! Now I do!
Amazing, useful and very entertaining!
Yay! I finally know the name of my sofa!! Thank you for sharing!! 😊
Very well explained and concise!
omg the recliner slander at the end is making me feel so validated, thank you for putting out genuinely informative content that is also hilarious
We all know they're more functional than pretty, but maybe when your knees hurt you'll appreciate one someday.
Our knees hurt in my family but we have more stylish, comfortable , perfect for knees height' couches@@MilwaukeeWoman
Very classy I love your hair
Love your videos, amazing content and pretty straightforward
Amazing video!! Love it!
What a cool video idea!

Excellent tutorial!

@@MilwaukeeWoman You are correct on both counts. But I could not stand to look at one of them in my house.
Good morning thank you for the amazing videos please can you explain to me what is indivi sofa?

Very cool educational video. However, they do make stylish reclining sofas. I am purchasing one.
Always loved the chaise lounge and I plan on getting it soon!
Excellent informative video....after which I subscribed. Thanks!
What are your feelings on couch covers? Do you think you could buy a bolder couch color and then later cover it with a neutral cover if you got bored of it or is this not recommended?
You can, but either reupholster it or buy covers that are custom made to fit so they look tailored and fitted well.
"If you are ready to sacrifice all your style for comfort... " 🤣 Too funny!
Brilliant video, just what I needed in advance of moving home 🏡
Cabriol is so cute! In Argentina we call it Canapé ❤️
Would you make a video on how to choose wall art?
I loved this video. I enjoy learning about Interior design.
Excellent video, very valuable information. Thanks so much
Loved this video!

Very interesting and informative! What about a Davenport? Is that a specific kind or just an ole timey/regional term?
I think is a regional term.
Excellent video, thank you🏴🇨🇦
Sorry, I’m team “comfort over style” 🤣🤣🤣

OK, just gotta say, your hair looks awesome! Color and style is perfect for you. OMG are you Canadian? I am and we called all sofas chesterfields.
Thank you! This’s very helpful
I have just discovered you and love your channel

Deep red or mauve go beautifully with dark grey.
Languages ARE hard. You're so right. I'm sure French people never mispronounce or misuse English words or American Slang.
I'd highly appreciate a video about sofa covers.

Can you give an advice, please, which one is the most comfortable?

It can be done and be successful but it is tricky as you would need all the info you mentioned to make an educated decision.@@HeronCoyote1234
Interesting! Thanks ❤

That "language is hard" was a subtle (yes I know that word!) diss at us Amurricans wasn't it!! I'm way too smarter for you than you are, posh pennies!! LOL
Wonderful video!
great video thanks for the informations
Your good sofa design I like 👍 because I am also sofamaker upholsterer
Very very interesting, thank you
I like modular , tuxedos and chaise longue
Omg I was using my Nintendo switch while watching and I was wondering why I kept hearing the joycon snap lol
Very useful video
thank you
Nice to know thanks 👍
You look great 🤣
I prefer the Lawson.
what period was Lawson made?
The Lawson sofa was invented in the early 1900s by Massachusetts businessman Thomas W. Lawson.
There's just something quintessentially American about having a huge recliner sofa, in the same way it is to have a huge cardboard suburban house with fake shutters and a pickup truck.
