I agree there's a peaceful way to stop the seal dribble by defenders, they can grab the ball using hands, and maybe if that spoils the game for the seal dribbler he may abuse by only doing this in the penalty area, for that there could be and exception for all handball fouls caused by a seal dribble within the penalty area are put on the half circle outside penalty area! this may be a dumb example but it rewards creativity within limits and erase that feeling unusefulness the defenders get when facing such a move!
Exactly. They did this to Neymar too and if I remember correctly he got a yellow card from the ref for throwing the ball above another player with a trick. That's ridiculous to me. Should defenders just attack players they can't stop? I don't want to watch a boring game of modern football we see sometimes today where both teams just stick to their positions, strategy and play so carefully there is barely any action. (The defenders are in constant threat of injury - either to self or opponent). It's the equivalent of the goalie holding onto the ball for too long. It wastes time, and it doesn't give the opposition players any legal move without risking injury.
The problem is that it's basically unstopable without attacking the player (which would be a foul), meaning that eventually you'd have players on all teams who could do that, making the game overall extremely boring.

The over emphasizes of the flair in footballer has made Brasil into a mockery of a country in football, making many youngsters focusing on sole skill rather than playing intelligence. The great Brazilian players of old were not great because of the skill moves, but in addition to. Selfishness is a big problem in football, specially these days, and that's why many teams don't have as much success or longevity as other iconic squads.
This is one reason why brasilian are not dominant and fun to watch as it was before. Players cannot even express their creativity anymore and this is a clear example. They banned a skill that frankly almost every European team would know how to defend from after some time.

I feel like it shouldn't be banned for showboating, but because its overpowered and actually dangerous. If I put my foot up there to tackle, it's dangerous play, and if I use my head and we butt heads it's dangerous play. So you're intentionally keeping the ball somewhere (close to your head) that it's dangerous (for you) if I make a play at. You shouldn't be allowed to use the head to dribble. I say, 'while in motion you can take 3 consecutive touches on the head and/or shoulders max in the process of bringing it down and or changing direction, but more than that is an illegal dribble. If the next touch is on the thigh, it CANNOT be to raise the ball up to the shoulder level or above'

As a Cruzeiro fan, we all loved to see Kerlon playing, he was very talented, a young diamond and the "seal dribble" was just one of his amazing skills. Unfortunately, the injuries shortened his career and took him off the pitch. I'm still upset when I remember him, he could have been an iconic talent in football.

The issue for me is not show boating but if a player can hold the ball on his head it’s almost impossible to take it without a foul. If you try to kick the ball it’s a foul for a kick towards the head. If you try to header the ball it’s a foul for a head but.
It shouldn’t have been banned for “showboating”. If that were the case, most, if not all celebrations would be. Taunting and showboating is not really cool, but it can be used to get in the opponent’s head. Even if taken too far, it’s still inside boundaries, even if morally gray. Easier said than done, but falling for provocations is on them. Nah, these people, most “footballers” or rather clowns are some of the most immature and irresponsible people that exist. They have a platform where they have found out they can get away with a lot of things and that’s also because many of the audience is also like them. Instead, the move should be banned I believe for two reasons: 1.- It’s similar to holding the ball between your legs, which has also been banned. Sure, you’re not technically holding it with the seal dribble, but it’s pretty damn close 2.- There are very few ways to defend against it. I can only think of charging him from the side or boxing him in. Even so, you can’t simply get in the way as it leads to obstruction and fouling. It leads to basically being able to defend only with fouls. You could make the argument that you can foul without ill intent, but accidents can happen. Risky play is risky for a reason. Another thing that you bring up in this video and I have always been a strong advocate for: referees and committees are FAR too lenient when it comes to ACTUAL fouls. How many people have had to step outside the pitch, be it momentarily or even indefinitely because of what is CLEARLY an intentional foul? Years of training and preparation down the drain, most of the times because of a freaking tantrum by what are supposed to be grown men. In my eyes, that’s not only a red card, but suspension for at least the same length the victim isn’t able to play. Hell, even banning them should be considered at that point.
I'm surprised there's no criminal charges in these scenarios. You don't get to intentionally harm somebody and brush it off as just a "bad play". Football injuries are dangerous as fuck.
@@goodmaro When the players are contesting for a header, none of them have possesion of the ball, hence the contest. In contrast, playing the ball like that makes it easy for one to be called out for a dangerous or risky play. Headers are also similar in that they can be quite dangerous. Remember when Messi had an injury for contesting one?
@@Dude_Online Nobody ever has possession of the ball on or over the field except a goalie holding it. A seal dribbler is just in proximity to a ball in space, same as anyone dribbling with feet. And a ball in space can be contested for. It's not obstruction if you're going for the ball and the opponent is not between you and the ball. If the opponent is under the ball, it doesn't matter where that ball came from, you have a right to the space the ball is coming down into. If that leads to player collisions, that's why they call soccer a collision sport.

Tbh, I don't think the problem is "disrespect" - it is that the move is a loophole in which the opposition has no way to tackle him without committing a foul. You obviously can't raise your boot to the level of another player's head. Unless he is inside the box, where the goalkeeper to snatch the ball off him with his hands, then the only way you can take the ball off him is to try to butt it away with your own head, which leads to the danger of players colliding heads (and serious injury). It's just a loophole FIFA had to close, or else every player would train themselves to do the same move and be invulnerable on the field, completely changing the game from one of kicking the ball to one of bouncing it on your head.
The seal drible should be allowed, after all, its creative football. But there would need to be a rule of how much time you can keep the ball on your head, as it could be not only Obnoxious to the defenders to defend, but also dangerous to the player performing the drible

I cant say I was able to do the elastico or some of the very complex ones, but I did the roulette in a few games and man, when you can get passed the defender and into open space it feels wonderful! haha
I was a fullback for school teams back in the 00s and played tons of pickup games at my local park... a couple of times kids would try to use the seal dribble and i would just use my chest or shoulders to jar them off balance and the ball would drop ...

Shoulder checking should be enough, it throws off balance without being a foul. It's cheesy, sure, but he got surgeries and got shoulder charged because of his mastery with the ball. I wouldn't mind a limit on the terms of this tactic, but that kind of intent to harm should lead to permanent league suspension.
The move is perfectly possible to counter, BUT it will hardly not generate contact that would be considered a foul or on the head which would lead to the game stopping
As a skill its really impressive, and I do not agree with people who said it's disrespectful. Ronaldinho dissrespected his opponents with his ball handling while he was in his prime and no one complained then. I guess it got to their ego that a kid is making fun of them, which shows how grown they actually are. But I do agree that as a tactic sholuldn't be allowed in a football like that. If you look how he used to use it it leaves very little space for opponents to try and take over the ball. And as he is controlling it with his head, they can't try to reach it with foot because it is a dangerous play, so they also have to try to take ball with their head - which will most likely result in yellow card and both players getting hurt because of such short window for action. If this wasn't banned we would saw it abused massively and changing football drastically. It would guarantee at least free kick every time someone uses it, and probably a card to a player who tried to stop it. So even he mastered it to perfection, from my perspective it was doomed from the start, and only caused him harm.

Kicking or shoulder charging is oddly the safest way to challenge someone doing a seal dribble. Other than letting them go pass, what can the defender do? Do they bring their foot up that heigh or go head to head for to challenge for a header? Could just call the sport concussion ball if this were allowed because that's what it would be.
If everybody would start running with the ball on their heads - that wouldn't be football anymore. There is a rule in basketball wher you can't run with a ball more than a couple steps

When you have your eye focused on heading the ball to repeatedly head it you leave yourself extremely vulnerable to getting fouled. You should always be wary on a football pitch and protect yourself from injury because fouls are part of the game and people will try to hurt you to stop you.

Its got to be a competition. If he seal dribbles then the defenders only option are to let him pass with the ball, kick at the ball (and his face) or barge into him. He was very skilled but his move did ruin football when it was used.
One of those was a penalty because he got assaulted. It's soccer.. and refs should protect the player with the ball.. not change the damn rules of the game because a player is too good!
Fifa should've kept it legal but also state that everytime you use that skill, opposition can then go into a two-footed sliding tackle without consequence.
The problem is that seal dribble is unfair. Head is a sensitive place to fight for the ball. You can only dispute it with your own head and it increases the probability of a concussion substantially.
Fun fact, I met him when i used to play for Santos FC here in Miami for it's youth academy. This was years ago when I was in middle school (2014 - 2015). He's a very humble guy and loves to joke around. He became a coach at one point and would give tips on how to counter and pressure better. Wish he stayed longer but later moved to either Michigan or Massachusetts i don't remember

I agree there's a peaceful way to stop the seal dribble by defenders, they can grab the ball using hands, and maybe if that spoils the game for the seal dribbler he may abuse by only doing this in the penalty area, for that there could be and exception for all handball fouls caused by a seal dribble within the penalty area are put on the half circle outside penalty area! this may be a dumb example but it rewards creativity within limits and erase that feeling unusefulness the defenders get when facing such a move!

The issue for me is not show boating but if a player can hold the ball on his head it’s almost impossible to take it without a foul. If you try to kick the ball it’s a foul for a kick towards the head. If you try to header the ball it’s a foul for a head but.

It shouldn’t have been banned for “showboating”. If that were the case, most, if not all celebrations would be. Taunting and showboating is not really cool, but it can be used to get in the opponent’s head. Even if taken too far, it’s still inside boundaries, even if morally gray. Easier said than done, but falling for provocations is on them. Nah, these people, most “footballers” or rather clowns are some of the most immature and irresponsible people that exist. They have a platform where they have found out they can get away with a lot of things and that’s also because many of the audience is also like them.
Instead, the move should be banned I believe for two reasons:
1.- It’s similar to holding the ball between your legs, which has also been banned. Sure, you’re not technically holding it with the seal dribble, but it’s pretty damn close
2.- There are very few ways to defend against it. I can only think of charging him from the side or boxing him in. Even so, you can’t simply get in the way as it leads to obstruction and fouling. It leads to basically being able to defend only with fouls. You could make the argument that you can foul without ill intent, but accidents can happen. Risky play is risky for a reason.
Another thing that you bring up in this video and I have always been a strong advocate for: referees and committees are FAR too lenient when it comes to ACTUAL fouls. How many people have had to step outside the pitch, be it momentarily or even indefinitely because of what is CLEARLY an intentional foul? Years of training and preparation down the drain, most of the times because of a freaking tantrum by what are supposed to be grown men. In my eyes, that’s not only a red card, but suspension for at least the same length the victim isn’t able to play. Hell, even banning them should be considered at that point.

It's not obstruction if you're trying to play the ball yourself. Why is defending against this any different from contesting any other header?

In contrast, playing the ball like that makes it easy for one to be called out for a dangerous or risky play. Headers are also similar in that they can be quite dangerous. Remember when Messi had an injury for contesting one?

And a ball in space can be contested for. It's not obstruction if you're going for the ball and the opponent is not between you and the ball. If the opponent is under the ball, it doesn't matter where that ball came from, you have a right to the space the ball is coming down into. If that leads to player collisions, that's why they call soccer a collision sport.

Tbh, I don't think the problem is "disrespect" - it is that the move is a loophole in which the opposition has no way to tackle him without committing a foul. You obviously can't raise your boot to the level of another player's head. Unless he is inside the box, where the goalkeeper to snatch the ball off him with his hands, then the only way you can take the ball off him is to try to butt it away with your own head, which leads to the danger of players colliding heads (and serious injury). It's just a loophole FIFA had to close, or else every player would train themselves to do the same move and be invulnerable on the field, completely changing the game from one of kicking the ball to one of bouncing it on your head.
The seal drible should be allowed, after all, its creative football.
But there would need to be a rule of how much time you can keep the ball on your head, as it could be not only Obnoxious to the defenders to defend, but also dangerous to the player performing the drible

I cant say I was able to do the elastico or some of the very complex ones, but I did the roulette in a few games and man, when you can get passed the defender and into open space it feels wonderful! haha

Shoulder checking should be enough, it throws off balance without being a foul. It's cheesy, sure, but he got surgeries and got shoulder charged because of his mastery with the ball. I wouldn't mind a limit on the terms of this tactic, but that kind of intent to harm should lead to permanent league suspension.

The move is perfectly possible to counter, BUT it will hardly not generate contact that would be considered a foul or on the head which would lead to the game stopping

As a skill its really impressive, and I do not agree with people who said it's disrespectful. Ronaldinho dissrespected his opponents with his ball handling while he was in his prime and no one complained then. I guess it got to their ego that a kid is making fun of them, which shows how grown they actually are.
But I do agree that as a tactic sholuldn't be allowed in a football like that. If you look how he used to use it it leaves very little space for opponents to try and take over the ball. And as he is controlling it with his head, they can't try to reach it with foot because it is a dangerous play, so they also have to try to take ball with their head - which will most likely result in yellow card and both players getting hurt because of such short window for action. If this wasn't banned we would saw it abused massively and changing football drastically. It would guarantee at least free kick every time someone uses it, and probably a card to a player who tried to stop it. So even he mastered it to perfection, from my perspective it was doomed from the start, and only caused him harm.

Kicking or shoulder charging is oddly the safest way to challenge someone doing a seal dribble. Other than letting them go pass, what can the defender do? Do they bring their foot up that heigh or go head to head for to challenge for a header? Could just call the sport concussion ball if this were allowed because that's what it would be.

If everybody would start running with the ball on their heads - that wouldn't be football anymore. There is a rule in basketball wher you can't run with a ball more than a couple steps
Everybody? Only a few players have the ability and the balls to pull it off. Using heads to control the ball shouldn't be against the rules, it's silly.
When you have your eye focused on heading the ball to repeatedly head it you leave yourself extremely vulnerable to getting fouled. You should always be wary on a football pitch and protect yourself from injury because fouls are part of the game and people will try to hurt you to stop you.

Its got to be a competition. If he seal dribbles then the defenders only option are to let him pass with the ball, kick at the ball (and his face) or barge into him. He was very skilled but his move did ruin football when it was used.

Fifa should've kept it legal but also state that everytime you use that skill, opposition can then go into a two-footed sliding tackle without consequence.
The problem is that seal dribble is unfair. Head is a sensitive place to fight for the ball. You can only dispute it with your own head and it increases the probability of a concussion substantially.
