It's a terrapin, Trachemys scripta scripta. Sadly many were dumped into waterways the 90s after the teenage mutant ninja turtles craze faded and people discovered they grow quite large, live a long time and need proper taking care of. Terrapins struggle in our winters and it's too cold for them to breed, but I still like seeing them. I've spotted one in the wolvercote lakes and another in the bit of river that runs behind Swan St.
