    Absolutely fascinating. Citizen explorer following an underground water course that none of us have ever seen. Great job!

    Fascinating. I and a group of fellow Christ Church undergraduates made this journey about 1970. We took two canoes we hired from Folley Bridge. In those days the entrance was open - no gratings - and you could lower a canoe into it. The water was deeper when we went.
    west gate had not been built, otherwise I suspect we wouldn’t have got through. There was a structure, which we assumed was the foundations of a road where the stream was a box section. We had to lie down in the canoes to get through.
    We came out in the memorial gardens and took the canoes down the stream to the Thames, returning them to Folley Bridge from the opposite direction we had left.

      Thank you Ron and Paul I love hearing about others whom have travel down trill mill, in fact its these storys that inspired me to do a video!

    Hi Stuart! Great video, thanks for sharing. I think the new Trill Mill Lane is actually south of where the stream runs under the West Gate and it actually runs under the through route between Castle Street and Turn Again Lane (and then probably follows Turn Again Lane). When I used to park a motor bike behind the old Westgate, under the old C&A building, you could often hear the water rushing under foot. This ties in with the location of the Little Gate which was just north of where Turn Again Lane joins Little Gate Street (and becomes St Ebbes Street); there's a plaque on the wall.

      That would make alot of sence as the box section tunnel obviously diverted from the original water way, thank you for the info I will probably walk it tomorrow 😁

    Another great video documenting the secret history of Oxford! Looked like a great adventure - I had heard about the Victorian skeletons in the punt, and also wondered about the exact route of the stream.

    Thank you so much for sharing this. I hadn’t explored past your first rest point during my last trek down there, as the water was too deep. I’ll be sure to head down there again for another explore though!

    Hilarious arms akimbo at 48:56 -- this whole thing was epic! Came here from Endeavour Series 2, Episode 1. Though the brickwork is completely different in real life.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! Does trill mill get a mention in Endeavour then? I met shaun Evans last year on Merton Street, may I should take him on one of my expeditions!

      @@ThePanta82 Yes -- Shaun Evans & Roger Allam find a murder victim's body in the Trill Mill, though it's pretty obvious they didn't film where you chaps were. The Fleet River in London, perhaps, or CGI? Don't know. Anyhow my wife used to teach at Ch. Ch. and she was transfixed by your video. Brilliant. It's one thing to talk about it, another to actually do it *and* make a video. Hats off.

    Where did you enter, Stuart? I believe the channel runs underneath the former Coopers of Paradise Street building. The are rumours of skeletons belonging to those who underestimated the level of flood water!

    Exit is in Christ Church Meadows, which is accessible by the public (i.e. not private).

    Hi Stuart, after watching this my dad (architect from oxford) showed me a book called 'Oxford by Jan Morris and on page 17 there is a brief section about the trill mill stream: " beneath the very centre of the city runs the Trill Mill stream, a gloomy underground waterway in which was discovered, one day in the 1920's, a rotted victoriana punt with two victoriana skeletons in it." Thought you might want to know about this if you didn't already, prehaps it's a good thing you didn't know as it would make it a lot creepier!

    • @ThePanta82
      @ThePanta82  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Joseph I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think it was jan morris's book where I first read about trill mill stream 20 odd years ago, it was the story of the two in the pubt that led me down there along with the story of lawrence of arabi......I can see how you may get trapped should you of been in a punt 100years ago but thankfully no spirits were encountered......this time aleast 😁

    • @paulbutler9731
      @paulbutler9731 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What a great book (and don’t forget Venice by the same author). Both written byJames Morris, who became Jan Morris (see Conundrum).
