It's a terrapin, Trachemys scripta scripta. Sadly many were dumped into waterways the 90s after the teenage mutant ninja turtles craze faded and people discovered they grow quite large, live a long time and need proper taking care of. Terrapins struggle in our winters and it's too cold for them to breed, but I still like seeing them. I've spotted one in the wolvercote lakes and another in the bit of river that runs behind Swan St.

The deep chisel marks in the stone are a key for render so at some point in its history it would have had a lime render, the roughness of the stone would itself act as a key so none would be there.

Metaphorically speaking this back door was breaking into Christ. In context Henrietta was obviously a lady and Charles definitely wasn't having a gay relationship with Henry. This back door takes on a whole new meaning when you view the bigger picture.

So officially we the public are told by Historical Britain that "Nothing can now be seen" of the once giant Abbey. Is this a blatant play on words while simultaneously denying you and me knowledge and access to sites buried beneath our streets? Liverpool Town Hall is a perfect example where no sensible explanation is given to why the first floor of the building is below street level. Incidentally thousands of houses are found right throughout Liverpool where it appears what was the first floor, becomes the ground floor. Often we see steps leading UP from the street to access the newly located front door.

Also thank you, it's messages like this that inspire me to go back out and film as I know I how privileged I am to live somewhere like this. I hope you enjoy the rest, my favourite other than this one is the trill mill tunnel as that was a great adventure! 👍🏻

Fascinating. I and a group of fellow Christ Church undergraduates made this journey about 1970. We took two canoes we hired from Folley Bridge. In those days the entrance was open - no gratings - and you could lower a canoe into it. The water was deeper when we went. west gate had not been built, otherwise I suspect we wouldn’t have got through. There was a structure, which we assumed was the foundations of a road where the stream was a box section. We had to lie down in the canoes to get through. We came out in the memorial gardens and took the canoes down the stream to the Thames, returning them to Folley Bridge from the opposite direction we had left.
