  • Thought I’d share my new design in Vanadis 4 Extra before I send it off to get heat treated.

You are always pushing the envelope with different designs & providing information about the steels you use. Thats why I like watching your channel. I am also a fan of big knives. Don't be concerned with dirty hands. You can't make anything without some dirt & grime.

Thank you, I always appreciate your comments. I like making new designs so I can try them. This one should be a good chopper because of its length, and its relative thinness (.145”) will keep it quick. Ultimately I want to make a thin knife that can chop and that can withstand the abuse that entails.

    Looks beautiful.
Question do you grind your blades by hand. Meaning files and paper or belt grinder?
Im asking because ive been using a 1x30. Now normally i just sharpen with it. But ive been practicing on old blades before i move to my blanks.
The problem is im not sure if im being hard on myself or if its adequate. You know how you paint something and you see all the imperfections yet everyone else says good job. Then you don't know if they are saying that just to make you feel better.
I might be making this bigger then it really is.😊.
Guess im wondering when do you say it's good enough? Any advice would be appreciated your knives always look amazing.

Hello, thank you for the compliment. I use a belt grinder, a 4x36. I don’t use a bevel jig but I do use a file guide for the plunge lines (I used to not use one but they come out way better with one). I have a 1x42 that I use for the outline of the knife but not for the bevels. I’ve seen people on TH-cam use a 1x42 or a 1x30 and get really good results, I just haven’t tried it.
Your second question is a hard one. There’s always going to be a disparity between what you have in mind and what you are able to produce. The more you make and the more you bring things into this world from your mind, the smaller that disparity will become. Both because you’ve gotten better in translating what you want through work and because what you have in mind becomes less fantastical since you start running into momentary limits.
I’m getting long winded but I say that all your criticism is legitimate and other people can’t help too much since they never saw the idea of what you wanted to make in your head before you started. My advise is work on a knife until you don’t want to anymore, use it and be super critical of it so that the next one you make is closer to what you want. Both looks and function will get better as you go. Hope this helps, I can always do a video if you need anything clearer.

@@totesmalotes thanks I understand. It’s better to do it use then use everything will work itself out if not make another one. Seems like very wise advice.
Still wouldn’t mind a video. Really appreciate the advice!

So whats your total number of knives made now? -- I told you a couple of years ago (I think) that you would get addicted and make more and more, and eventually you might start selling them

    • @totesmalotes
      @totesmalotes  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Honestly I don’t know the number. I’ll probably do a video of them all together since I still have them. If you did say that, then you were right. It’s soothing to make knives and they are fun to use. I haven’t sold any, though some people have asked me in person, I always feel weird telling them a price since I know it’s higher than they expect it to be.

@@totesmalotes you made it, you set the price - your outlay in materials and sub-contracted work and then your work and time (but just because you ask it dont mean you will get it -- at first anyway - if you do sell and continue to make - you will become better and then who knows ....)

    • @totesmalotes

@@vyr01 your right. The only thing is that there isn’t much motivation for me to sell my knives. The only reason I’m thinking of doing it now is because it would be a new experience and I’m curious to see what happens.
As for money, taking into account the cost of heat treatment, shipping and materials, I would have made a little less than $150 which isn’t much of an incentive.
I do appreciate your advice, this is just an explanation on my end.

@@totesmalotes Understandable - its just some thoughts for you to take or leave as you get what you pay for (sometimes) and I am throwing this out for free (which could make it total crap, or it might be helpful (thats the hope from me anyway))
