Woman Plunges to Her Death From Rising Drawbridge

- Carol Wright was crossing the Royal Park Bridge, which links Palm Beach to West Palm Beach. When the drawbridge started to open, she couldn’t get off and fell to her death. Inside Edition is walking across the Palm Beach, Florida, bridge where the 79-year-old woman lost her life when it opened. Wright had two minutes to get off the bridge but couldn’t make it. “I guarantee you she made a valiant effort to get across this bridge and tried valiantly to save her own life,” the family attorney said.

To have lived a long life and to go out this way is very horrible and sad! Someone had to see her. RIP
This happened a week or so ago and I could have sworn there were one or two witnesses ... because I could have sworn there was a guy that had tried to help her ... ?

There should be some sort of sensors built within those bridges along with a visual check to make sure they’re clear before opening them. This is a such a preventable tragedy. My heart goes out to this woman and her family, what a nightmare. RIP 🙏

They’ve got better than sensors on bridges, there’s someone literally in the control tower responsible for making sure it’s clear. They should have been able to see her.
You would think they would have thought through this entire issue, considering the eldlerly, handicapped AND hard of hearing as well as having someone to watch the bridge for pedestrians. What a terrifying way to die! My condolences to her family.
They took their responsibility for granted and chose not to watch out for pedestrians that day. So sad for the old lady.

I don't know man, its like saying the train didn't see the person crossing despite all the noise and warnings.
It was the operator's fault for not stopping the bridge and his negligence that cost the life, but technically also preventable by the woman as well. She was around 10 feet from the end of the bridge when it began to rise, which means she was still walking after the warning maybe thinking she was going to make it in time.

If nothing else someone on duty at all times to sight if anyone is on or near the bridge, with cameras and windows to see all points. It just took one more person on duty. Or someone to go to each side of the bridge to clear it before the gate could be raised. This is horrific and unnecessary. Poor dear lady, to end life like this. Just negligence. It seems like it could be manslaughter even.

ever since I heard a story about a situation just like this in my hometown, when I was 10, I’ve been terrified of crossing bridges like that. One of my biggest phobias.
I would’ve thought that there was some sort of safety system on the bridge itself. Especially with the amount of seniors that live in Florida. This is such a tragedy - my thoughts and condolences go out to her and her family. 💐

I don't usually get effected by many stories,but this one actually breaks my heart. To live till 79, in FL where all people go to live to retire(I lived there for 9 years and hated it,but I'm also not old enough to retire) this story really tears at my heart strings. How scared she must have been, and what she thought before she was unable hold on truly bothers me.

There should be cameras. The attorney is trying to say she was right at the entrance of the bridge when it started to open. Meaning they would have seen her. She probably became confused and tried to cross away.

I agree and I mean no harm when I say this but it's no way she got to the top of the bridge opening without hearing the alarms and seeing those guard gates come down colored in red and white how was she at the top where the opening starts if she was supposedly trying to get back or get off it doesn't make sense it sounds like she simply tried to hurry up and cross the opening anyway not get back or get off all she would of had to do was go the opposite way of the bridge opening and I'm sure she would have been fine she had to obviously feel the bridge get steeper and steeper as she kept walking up.

The lawyer can't explain why she couldn't get off the bridge with a loud bells warning and 2 minute warning before the bridge opens up. Doesn't take 30 seconds to get off 1 half that opens. That lawyer is just there for the $100 an hour paycheck, he's not winning the case.
Did you consider that the woman might not be able to run? She was 79 years old, after all…Osteoporosis, arthritis and other ailments start to take over at that age, and even if a person can still WALK, running may not be an option.

If this happens, wrap yourself around the guard rail like a pretzel and don’t think about anything except your muscles. Eventually it will come down and you will be OK. Do not try to hold onto the edge at the top.

Crazy, grew up about 5 minutes from a draw bridge, have walked it. Rode bikes over it thousands and thousands of times. You could always see how far away the boat was when the bells started going off so you were never scared of them lifting it untill everyone was clear...... Very sad

She had 2 minutes AFTER the bells, AFTER the barricades came down, on a route she took daily. Sadly, she likely decided to continue over the drawbridge rather than turn around and go back. I know the family is destroyed... but suing the county is just wrong.
There’s a human stood watch for a reason. Instead of having the computers automatically do it themselves. They failed to see her. No point in having the human there if he aint gunna do his job
This will be a very interesting legal case...almost like a 50-50 one. Sounds like she clearly made the wrong decision, but then again, perhaps the person operating the bridge could've or should've noticed her. I don't know, tragic, either way you put it.
A friend of mine was the 2nd car at the bridge and saw the whole thing. She went around the arm when it came down. Ive crossed that bridge hundreds of times when I lived in West Palm and worked in Palm Beach. The red light stops cars, then the arm comes down...and then there is a delay before the bridge goes up. She caused her own demise although the bridgekeeper might be in trouble depending on if safety protocol wasn't followed

The unfortunate victim's family should have observed the decline in this woman's awareness of her environment and limited her activities. There has to be a feeling of guilt in family who should have taken better care of her!!
She still is an adult and you cannot limit her activities. After she passed the gate that went down there is only audio warnings. A deaf person that was younger could of had the same outcome. At the least the gate operator should have to look at the bridge to see if its clear before opening. Which they had full visual view of and could of avoided her death.

I lived on the outskirts of Charleston SC and went over several bridges most days. I would never cross that type of bridge on foot, and I was 1/3 of her age. Bridges get stuck opening, closing, malfunction, etc. Sixty seconds is not a long time for an elderly woman walking a bike. It is sad that she lost her life. I wonder where the bridge operator was. I’ve seen many over the years nodding out.

Something isn’t adding up. Did she decide to cross after the alarm went off? Did she not hear it bc of hearing problems or headphones? Was she already on the bridge when this happened? Maybe she was slow bc of age. Or did the bridge open faster than it normally would have? Did the operator forget to sound the alarm or follow all the protocols? Was she already having a medical emergency before the bridge opened that would have hindered her from getting off it? And I understand that the operator can’t not open the bridge when a boat is coming. Even if someone is on it. I really need more context to this story. It sucks that this happened though. I hope she was right with God and I hope her family can get through this.

I understand that she is a senior citizen and she won't be as swift as a 30-year-old but if she was fit enough to push her bike across and hold on to the bridge for "several minutes", as the family attorney said, then she should have had enough time to avoid this situation. I think she tried to cross even after the alarms and warning went off. You see this all the time with railroad crossings and traffic lights. People think they can beat the train or the red light and then find out that they can't.

the drawbridge for boats and ships to go under and if they suddenly ly close it only more damage would ensue. It's just like a train, it wont stop for anybody on the tracks because it would then kill the people inside the train.

Honestly though, the bridge has a fair warning system. The bell should have instantly signalled any pedestrian to speed up, or go back. Guess they should have put a sign to warn others.

The old lady shouldn't have crossed the bridge, its her fault, there's bells that go off and they're loud, its her decision to cross the bridge knowingly it would open when the bell rang so

A very sad story. But some important details seem to be missing. 1) The bridge operator obviously failed to assess what was happening. 2) The 60 second warning bell followed by 2 minutes before bridge begins to open equals 3 minutes, more than enough time for a pedestrian, let alone someone on a bicycle to turn around and reach safety.
Sounds like a perfect storm of two pilot errors.

@narrativekenji She was 79 years old! Give the poor old woman a little break. You don't know if she was totally in her right mind or not. She could have been on some kind of medication that caused her to become confused/disoriented. You never know what someone is going through. Plus, the reaction times of many elderly people become progressively more delayed the older they get. I can't say that's the case for EVERY old person, just that a lot of them experience one or both of these problems.
They should have live cameras to avoid these issues

@ghettomomma719. This video left out one key factor in this situation. The drawbridge operator opened the bridge WITHOUT any warning first!! That's why the woman started to walk across the bridge. After this incident, the drawbridge operator was fired.

If you’re in her position, why not try to roll down AS SOON as the bridge starts going up? You would certainly survive that way. You may have broken bones and bruises (due to a steeper angle) if you roll down slowly, but at least you’re alive. And to anyone who says “she’s 79! She’s old!”: That’s more of a reason to roll down and not hang on. Hanging on at that age is 99% certain death...
