Cafeteria staff have no control over what is served. Its not like they magically decided to serve this food. Most of this food is chosen by the local school district/school board. I grew up super poor and even then, I didn't do more than loosely pick at my lunch trays in elementary. I've never understand why schools waste money being so cheap they serve food that will not get eaten.
*I remember in HS, we had tater tots, pizza, hamburgers, chicken burgers, fries (chili/cheese) we a lot choices. Hell we were even allowed off campus to get our own food if we wanted*
Mhm. Though my school said that if we left campus we had to walk to wherever we were going (had students sprinting about a block or two to buy McDonald's a couple of times and sometimes they were still eating when lunch ended). And we were ALWAYS told by the lunch staff if anything seemed wrong with the food (which there rarely ever was) to IMMEDIATELY report it to them so that they could figure out what happened and fix the problem.
This makes me appreciate my elementary school lunches and breakfasts. It wasn't the best food (though it was pretty good for school meals at the time, we even had milkshakes and they would play a song that encouraged us to shake our cartons), but they had good quality control and made sure it was edible.
School lunches have always made me soooooo angry! All lunch should be FREE nationwide. It should be balanced, good quality, fleshly prepared and all organic. Just looks at school lunch in France, it can be done. Kids should walk out nationally until our education system is entirely fixed.
My school once served a “chicken sandwich”. It was just a hotdog bun with extremely thin chicken stuff. They didn’t even bother defrosted the thing. It was store-bought and came in a plastic bag. It was frozen when we took it out!! Ice literally fell out of it and the ice melted so the bread was soggy. Another time I got an orange and I was inspecting it for bruises or something. THERE WAS A HOLE IN IT WITH COBWEBS INSIDE!!!! UGHEWWEEIGH
I grew up incredibly poor. My brothers and I where on the subsidy school lunch and in flat Rock Michigan that list has different lunches then the other kids (at least when I was in school) so not only did we get what looked and smelled worse then dog food,we had a different line we had to stand in to get food. It was humiliating.... None of my brothers nor I wanted to go to school so we all quit.... I'm still working on getting my GED 👍
I am 32. We used to have awesome lunches in America. In Poland, we had breakfast, lunch, & dinner...free of charge & they were REAL meals. In America, we had breakfast & lunch. Lunch had two different options; The main lunch & a deli. If this is what they're serving you, then that's on your school.
Exactly! It’s the school district. My children had great meal options in their school. It wasn’t a private or upper middle class district either. The schools had great PTAs (Parent and Teacher Associations) from elementary all the way up to HS. People want better for their kids, then they need to get involved in their child’s schools and be the voices that their child needs.

i will never forget the moments of my old elementary school lunch, or the stories ive been told. one time, i was sitting with my friends talking and some girl we knew told the people at our table to look. she tried to take a bite of the greasy, cardboard pizza. the whole top lair of cheese just pulled off, it was disgusting. my brother, in high school bought lunch maybe one time and the lunch lady told him to take a vegetable. she gave him bean salad. idk if it’s just me but not in all the years ive been alive have i heard of “bean salad.” it was just straight beans. another instance, my bestie told me she tried one of our friends mozzarella sticks. she said there was zero cheese and it tasted old. she said she tried the marinara sauce with it and it was literally water with tomato chunks. we had a thing called snack time, idk if other schools did or not but just saying. a lot of people would get the cookies. now the cookies were warm and everyone liked a good treat, right? so many kids liked them. including my bestie (we have literally had a debate over these cookies😂), she used to act so elegant, cutting her cookie into little pieces to eat them so she could enjoy them slowly. so I asked what they tasted like, she let me try a little piece. when I say I have never, ever tasted anything so much like playdoh I mean it. it tasted like you were biting into playdoh. I spit it out and she had a very offended face😂. they also gave us salad, sounds good. but nah, it was 3-4 pieces of lettuce with 1 cucumber on top. the only half way decent thing in that lunch room was the pretzels with cinnamon sugar on top, even those were trash sometimes.
My Mom was an elementary school teacher for 40 years and she couldn't stand the thought of a student in her class going hungry because they didn't have money in their account for whatever reason. She wouldn't hesitate to pay for their lunch so the child would have something to eat and be able to focus in class because they had a full belly, not an empty one.
Don't go blaming vendors. When I was in high school we got stuff like that so if anything it's a countrywide issue. The vendors can get away with this cause schools have been getting away with the same.
This is how meals were like the first two years of high school bc the principal decided we needed a million dollar renovations to the school and not better meals (we didn’t need renovations, he just wanted to make the school look more modern, the renovations he had done caused a lot of problems for everyone) bc he spent a million dollars like that he got fired and they replaced him with a principal that fixed our lunches
I once went to a summer camp at one of the public schools in my town. They gave us a bag of sliced apples and a sandwich for lunch. And i ate a apple and it was very mushy and then i looked inside and saw some of the apples had mold on them.
I graduated HS 10 years ago in May and I remember the school lunch being extremely good. Even in elementary and junior high it wasn’t anywhere as bad as this, wtf 😭
I remember when I was in 5th grade, if you didn’t have enough money in your lunch account, you would have to get a pb&j and rarely had bologna and cheese sandwiches so if you had a peanut allergy you couldn’t really get anything
I went to elementary school in Portland, Maine from 1989-1993. The school lunch there was actually fresh and delicious just like hotel room service food. It was nothing like this.
There used to be kids at the private school I went to who would not have lunch or snacks so I'd get it for them because I didn't have to pay. I did not realize at 6/7 that the reason I never had to pay was because my dad would pay my tab at the end of the month! When my parents confronted me about how much the tab was I was so scared that I was going to get into trouble! When I told them what I was doing they told me that I could keep doing it and how they were happy because they had grown up in poverty and missed many meals! My mom, now in her 70s, still remembers a girl named Mary Elizabeth who would bring extra lunch for her since she never had a lunch! I've always wanted to find her and tell her, her legacy because now my daughter knows about the great Mary Elizabeth! ❤️❤️❤️
It's not the school that should be ashamed it's whoever is responsible for making sure our schools get funding FOR ALL OF OUR CHILDREN'S NEEDS... who's pocket is the SCHOOL'S BUDGET IN? SHAMEFUL...
My regular lunch all thru last 2 years of high school was a large, freshly made, chef salad. With 2 warm rolls, milk, and occassionally, a chewy oatmeal raisin cookie. Cookies were large. I was full, it was lovely! Best lunches I ever had!
I one time WHISPERED to my friend "this milk expires tomorrow" And the one lunch aid screamed "THE MILK ISNT EXPIRED!!" And I have seen expired milk being served before.
My school used to serve abominations like these, but had a strict no-phone policy in the cafeteria and I always thought it was because the food was that bad

When I was in high school back in the 90's, the school used to feed us just donuts for breakfast & Domino's pizza for lunch. 1 donut & 1 slice of pizza. All the cafeteria ladies had to do was just "serve". They got lazy & quit caring to cook for us. Then, the kids started fighting more.
Damn.
Cafeteria staff have no control over what is served. Its not like they magically decided to serve this food. Most of this food is chosen by the local school district/school board. Plus there is a limit on how many calories they can serve now.
I graduated in 2014 and my high school sold dominos pizza everyday. Plus they had baked cheetos and lays. They also had other food. But the majority of kids chose pizza because the other food was awful in comparison.
That's why prison food is better. They know how to influence crowd control. Food matters.

I am 32. We used to have awesome lunches in America. In Poland, we had breakfast, lunch, & dinner...free of charge & they were REAL meals. In America, we had breakfast & lunch. Lunch had two different options; The main lunch & a deli. If this is what they're serving you, then that's on your school.
Too many people these days who don't care. At least in the past, they _pretended_ to care

This little girl is a literal genius hero. I Cant believe i was dumb at her age
i will never forget the moments of my old elementary school lunch, or the stories ive been told.
one time, i was sitting with my friends talking and some girl we knew told the people at our table to look. she tried to take a bite of the greasy, cardboard pizza. the whole top lair of cheese just pulled off, it was disgusting. my brother, in high school bought lunch maybe one time and the lunch lady told him to take a vegetable. she gave him bean salad. idk if it’s just me but not in all the years ive been alive have i heard of “bean salad.” it was just straight beans. another instance, my bestie told me she tried one of our friends mozzarella sticks. she said there was zero cheese and it tasted old. she said she tried the marinara sauce with it and it was literally water with tomato chunks.
we had a thing called snack time, idk if other schools did or not but just saying. a lot of people would get the cookies. now the cookies were warm and everyone liked a good treat, right? so many kids liked them. including my bestie (we have literally had a debate over these cookies😂), she used to act so elegant, cutting her cookie into little pieces to eat them so she could enjoy them slowly. so I asked what they tasted like, she let me try a little piece. when I say I have never, ever tasted anything so much like playdoh I mean it. it tasted like you were biting into playdoh.
