- John Hamann is famous for walking through Milwaukee with his shirt off. He’s been nicknamed “The Milverine” because of his resemblance to Wolverine, the X-man who like John, is strong, tall, and bears powerful mutton chops. John has never left Milwaukee, but he is recognized by tourists and locals alike as a mascot for the city itself. There's a Facebook group with over 10k followers dedicated to spotting him in the wild, he has a theme song, there is a beer emblazoned with him on the label, and a bobblehead of him is being inducted into the National Bobblehead Museum. He has a yelp page, and there’s a Google Maps page devoted to tracking sightings of The Milverine. He was so commonplace that when he stopped being spotted around town in 2017, news outlets went looking for him. Where did he go, and what does the life of a local legend look like from the inside?

You'd have to be to be born in Milwaukee in the 60s and think it is still great. I brought my mother back to Milwaukee for the first time since she lived there in the late 60s. She was in tears. The cities of the US are slowly dying because of a shift in culture that is nothing more than rot.

We had a sort of “mascot” guy here in Toledo, Ohio. He went by the name “Spider”. He drove a green truck that had all kinds of toys and dolls attached to it. Everyone knew Spider.
A city thrives because of these kinds of characters. People like this are great for the morale of the people as a whole.
Folks like this are the beating heart of the midwest. Good people. And wonderfully refreshing taste in music!
Lmao I think every city has some legend like this. In my city we had a homeless guy called "Rambo" it was a gipsy strong old man that could lift fridge and take it like 5 km to salvage it for money. He was colleting heavy iron furniture and stuff from street and then sold it. He was always drunk but funny af. he died last year. Everyone in city knew him, he even had his facebook page with many likes .. RIP Rambo !
