I stumbled across your 30min box cushion video as I was looking for a tutorial for making a pet bed. I was so impressed with the detailed steps that I watched your entire Learning to Sew series. I'm still very much a novice so I picked up quite a few helpful tips. Thank you for making these videos!
I have just started sewing at 66 years old and these videos have given me so much .Thank you .The quality you have for getting the point across is superb
I love the Sailrite videos and instructions. No one on TH-cam does it like you do. Your voice is so calming to me. Your the best ever ever ever Sailrite.
@@SailriteDIY You are so very welcome friends at Sailrite. I have sewn since I was 16 years old. I love to sew. I repair and make scratch garments. Folks started to ask me if I did upholstery. I said I didn't know how. Then I came across your instruction videos. I watched and watched and rewatched them until I completely understood. Now Im able to make beautiful cushions for my clients. Im so happy and proud to say it was because of you Sailrite. The nice gentleman with the calming voice whom teaches the videos is the best. I even watched the videos on like the stuff ill never be asked to make. I love you Sailrite. Thank you for you friends! Happy holidays 2020.🤗❤👍
I know exactly what you mean. I saved.$100 a month to buy the best machine they have. Well worth it. Try your best to save and you can buy a great machine for yourself too friend!
Like many people who watch these videos I am a beginner and find these useful projects very informative and inspiring. I hope you continue to make more beginner videos with additional useful items. Thank you.
Great video. I have learned more about basic sewing from you than anyone else! Purchased the Sailrite zigzag model last year and have greatly expanded my confidence and capabilities. I found a technique for setting precise zipper centered installation. I place the zipper under the machine needle with the needlepoint just touching the zipper center. Lower the presser foot and hold the zipper straight. Then I place the magnetic edge guide alongside the zipper. Raise the presser foot and lift the needle. You machine is now precisely set to sew the zipper hem at exactly center. No measuring or dividing fractions necessary.
+Sailrite I love your video I bought this machine from you a few months ago, have not really use much, But now I want to star using it However it is very hard, maybe I will use more and it will loosen up. Keep posting your
I love your videos. They are basic and easy to understand. You also give background and TIPS to the background information you are conveying. I like your magnetic sewing guide as I have MS with shaky hands and have a very difficult time keeping even straight stitching straight! Ha. Sounds simplistic, but its a challenge for me.
Evy, Thanks for the positive comments. Yes, I too love the magnetic sewing guide, I bet it helps even more than normal for people struggling with MS. Thanks again! Eric
Thanks Eric, that was an excellent tutorial, very easy to follow. The Mrs and I are having a pillow making competition, after I blurted out that I could make a better pillow than her! Thank goodness I found your tutorial, as I haven't got a clue how to make a pillow! I have turned up trousers, and that's it. We both have Singer 201k2 machines, which I have refurbished, and after a few glasses of vino calapso, I started bragging about my fantastic sewing skills!! Hopefully, after watching you, I can make a good pillow. I am not telling her that I have looked on TH-cam! Thanks again.
Eric thank you so much for the explanation you make look so easy. i have never sawed anything but after watching your video i sure want to learn some more definitely..Thank you God Bless you
Sailrite Hello, Thank you for your videos!, Can i have information about your sewing machine? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your time with us!!
Hi Sandy, Yes, visit this link for a lot more information regarding our Ultrafeed sewing machines: www.sailrite.com/Ultrafeed-Portable-Industrial-Sewing-Machines
I love all these videos! Very helpful. I'm just now thinking of getting back into sewing. Haven't done a whole lot of things in the past but I remember I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely want to make things like this. On to watch more videos to learn more. Thanks for all the informative videos. :)
I have been really enjoying your tutorials! The best I have come across. I have a question, in the video you said the pillow form was a 19 inch form, and that you should cut the two plates 19 inches as well. Do I not need to add seam allowance when working on pillows? Do I need to add seam allowance when making a box cushion for a porch swing, or would it be the same principle of cutting the fabric to the exact dimensions of the foam? Thank you!
When making throw pillows you want a tight fit so we do not add seam allowance. When making a box cushion we do add seam allowance, determine boxing width by measuring foam thickness (include batting, if any, under slight compression during measuring). To this measurement add between ¼” and ¾”. Keep in mind that thinner cushions look best with more allowance added and thicker cushions look best with less. Basically adding less of an allowance will allow the seams to roll into the edging of the cushion. See our videos on making box cushions for more information: th-cam.com/video/XIIgvJEvCSk/w-d-xo.html
Just finished this 7-video series. I just have to say that the instructions are really wonderful. Anyone can easily learn it like this. Do you (or anyone else you recommend) have any more videos on basic "sewing principles" or "techniques"? Most videos I see are directed towards a certain end-goal. And once again, thanks a lot for this intuitive video series!
I have never installed a zipper before and I'm 60 years old I was always scared to but the way you show how to install a zipper I think I could do it 👍 next thing would be how to install a new zipper to an outfit that the zipper has broken...... you are a good teacher to show how to do this your very patient ..... I'll be watching more of your videos
I love your magnetic guide! Never seen one before. Having just seen the video with piping, I thought this would include piping and zip combined? it's a very plain pillow with no proper edge to it?
Thanks! Piping on pillows or other projects is a preference. We have other videos showing how to do that. Here is one of the many: th-cam.com/video/x0stnegtV-o/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for taking time to show us how to sew a pillow. But I have to ask what type of sewing foot are you using? Is it a generic foot that can be used on a Singer sewing machine?
+Jenny Kretzschmar No, the walking foot on the Sailrite Ultrafeed Sewing machine is a mechanical foot that is not an attachment. It will not fit on any other sewing machine.
I made a bunch of pillows for my Mom for Christmas this past year and this video helped me out big time! I'm about to make a few more pillows now, but I forgot what size I should cut my fabric. I have pillow forms that are 20 x 20 - Your video says to cut the fabric 20 x 20, but I've seen videos that say you should add an inch to each size? 21 x 21 What do you think?
Rochelle F Good question. It all depends on how tight you want the pillow cover on the form. I like a tight fitting cover, so I cut my plates to the size of the pillow form and then the seam allowance will make the cover slightly smaller. However, if you want the pillow to be a little loose then cutting them one inch larger will result in a cover that is a little looser when placed on the form. So... it is a preference not a rule.
Yes, hold the trailing threads when you start sewing. After you sew a stitch or two you can let them go. That will help prevent them from being pulled into the bobbin area.
You can find that sewing machine the Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ here: www.sailrite.com/Sewing-Machines/Portable-Heavy-Duty-Sewing-Machines/Ultrafeed-LSZ-1-Sewing-Machine
I wonder why you don't clip the corners before you invert the case? This reduces the bulk in the corners and produces a nicer sharper corner on the finished product.
I would add that you use a serger on the raw edges or use pinking shears. Or use a zigzag stitch to edge the material. This means that when you wash and tumble dry the cushion cover the material doesn’t unravel at the edges leaving a ratsnet internally.
Most sewing machines have the option of having a cording or piping foot installed. Usually they are a separate foot that requires the standard foot to be removed and replaced with it.
We are using a walking foot sewing machine called the Sailrite Ultrafeed Sewing Machine. Here is a link: www.sailrite.com/Sewing-Machines/Portable-Heavy-Duty-Sewing-Machines

Don't we need seem allowances?
You can add it, but we think that a smaller cover over the pillow insert makes the throw pillow look better, so we don't add it.
Finally i can fix my mom pillows !!!!
