    I’ve been looking to replace two patio seats and this video was VERY helpful. Retail prices were $120 to $200 and they weren’t the right size. This video gave me refresher course since I haven’t sewn in a long time, and saved me a lot of money. I was looking at another big retailer who is local and on-line, where I thought I was getting good prices until I found they didn’t carry the upholstery zippers. Then I looked at your shop and the fabric they had “on sale”( LMAO) was drastically beating by your regular (non-sale) prices. I purchased the material, heavy duty thread, zippers, Dacron padding, adhesive spray, 3 yards of fabric marker and machine needles all for less than the other store for 2 yards of fabric and padding. For only $53.00 with free shipping and $5 off from a coupon I found on-line. I am so happy!! On top of all this, when I’m finished, I’ll have two beautiful custom Tommy Bahama cushions and possibly pillows. I just hope they come out as beautiful as this video. I’m little confused on the whole sewing around the corners bit. Thank you

    Thanks so much for this video! You easily cut my sewing time in half, and made my sewing project really fun! I made four cushions in under two days & they look great! I found your simple instructions easy to modify for my needs - adding tiebacks, beefing up the foam size a bit & putting an upholstery style zipper in. I did need to add a few pins when sewing the pieces together. Your sewing skills are impressive :) We recently had our dining room chairs professionally reupholstered in the same Vern Yip fabric that you feature in the video. Love it!

    Thank you for the great video I have used this as reference when making new box cushions.
    I altered my pattern to have the zipper wrap around the edges for an easier fit because camper cushions have a board under the foam.
    I flipped my seams ripper over but I lived your tip on how to sew in the zipper! I was nervous about that and your instructions were perfect. I was a little confused on the note about the width of the zipper but after asking my sister she reassured me you meant the width of the zipper including the fabric not just the teeth.
    You video was fast paced and not repetitive which was great! Thank you for sharing!

    Nice video , it gave me as a novice many helpful tips. My question is related to the ripping the fabric to gain access to the zipper from the outside of the fabric. How do you prevent the cut zipper opening from fraying? OR did I miss a step.Thanks,

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark, It's not actually ripping the fabric, just the thread from the first seam sewn on the zipper panel. There will be little pieces of thread to pick out, but the fabric won't be damaged.

    Thanks for the video. It has proven helpful as we have had to watch it a few dozen times. Two questions when you are cutting the boxing, your calculation states “foam” bit do you also consider the batting as in addition to the thickness of foam? # 2 when you say length of zipper are you referring to the actual length plus 2” or the zipper opening plus the 2”?

      I meant, would it be hard to use Satin fabric?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Satin fabric isn't very durable for upholstery, so we wouldn't recommend it unless the cushion is more decorative than functional. Satin is slippery to work with, so it would be more difficult than a typical decor fabric.

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! There's no real rules but it's easier to get the foam in the cover with a zipper that's as long as possible but still shorter than the back. For cushions where the sides will be hidden, some people even wrap the zipper around the sides a couple inches.

      Darris B. Nelson Thanks for the tip! I'm planning on making cushions like these for the seats of a DIY couch. What would be the steps to sew one side of a zipper to the cushion and the other side to the couch so that the cushion can be attached/zipped to the couch and doesn't move around when sat on?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be easiest to add a piece of fabric on the back in the seam between the bottom piece and back panel. You could put Velcro on this flap of fabric and stick adhesive backed Velcro to the couch. If you want to use a zipper, it should be an open ended zipper. I'm not sure how you would attach the other side of the zipper to the couch as it depends on the specific couch.

    • @futureboy7653
      @futureboy7653 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@onlinefabricstore Makes sense, thanks! I'm thinking the zipper can be attached to the couch with a staple gun - maybe sewed to a flap first depending on the fit.

    For the boxing strip I shouldn't add the seam allowance? You mentioned it only for the height not for the strip boxing length. Thanks

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The strip I used was longer than I needed and I cut off the extra after sewing all the way around to the zipper panel. Sorry, I guess I forgot to mention that because I used the full width of the fabric for the length of the strip and didn't cut any off until it was sewn. I would suggest making it a couple inches longer just to make sure you don't come up short!

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lyne, the zipper is measured from metal pull to metal stopper. 2 inches is added because the fabric extends past the end of the zipper a bit so the seams aren't right at the ends of the zipper. Good luck!

    I just bought a second hand sewing machine and it doesn't have the zipper foot. Can the zipper section be done with just the normal sewing foot? Thank you!

      +Rhys & Mary Parsons With other kinds of smaller zippers, you might be able to get away with it, but with large upholstery zippers, probably not. You wouldn't be able to get very close to the zipper with the needle, which wouldn't look the greatest. But it might still work as long as you're able to catch the fabric edges of the zipper when you sew.

    I have a similar 50's teak chair that need new cushions. Hiring someone to do it was way to expensive for what i paid for the chair. Haven't sewn since primary school so should be fun.

    How do you calculate what length zipper you need? You say, to cut the zipper panel to be 2" longer than the zipper, then later to sew one end of the zipper panel to one end of the side of the boxing. Should the zipper be the length of the cushion minus 1"?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The zipper should be 2" shorter than the length of the side they are on (1" on each end) This is so the cushion stays true to shape.

    if my cushion is 4x26.5x24.5 what length zipper should i use

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      gwen sumlin If the width is 26.5", a 24" zipper would work well. If the width is 24.5", 18" would probably be the best to make sure you can't see the zipper at all from the side. You may have to wrestle with the foam a little more to get it in, but the opening should still be plenty big!

    Can I cut the perimeter fabric on the length of the fabric rather than the width as you did? My fabric width is 54" and the foam perimeter for my foam will need to be 66" (82" - 16" zipper).

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! That would work for any fabric that doesn't have a directional pattern.

    I am making a pleather cushion for a built in bench. I don't understand the instructions for marking the bottom. Since I'm using pleather my corners are stiff and will not lay flat like your fabric does when marking the bottom. Any suggestions for me?

      You will want to fold it so it looks nicely and then sewn. You then should cut away the excess material to avoid bulkiness

    Hello, I just had a few questions, if you wouldn’t mind helping out. Thank you in advance! If the perimeter of my cushion minus the zipper is 66, am I going to want to add an inch for a 1/2 in. seam allowance per side? Do I need to add addition to account for the curves, or just the 1in seam allowance? Also, for the zipper panel, if my boxing height is 4 in +1in+ the width of the zipper which is 1 1/4, I would need to make it 6 1/4 , correct, Then when folding in half and using half the width of the zipper for the seam allowance, it would be 5/8? Sorry, this part is kind of confusing for me.

      Hi Shawn, For the side boxing we suggest cutting a piece that is longer than you need, then cut off the extra (leaving 1/2" for seam allowance when sewing it to the zipper panel) at the end. This way it's sure not to come up short. Add a couple inches to your perimeter minus the zipper. Yes, that's exactly right for the zipper panel measurements. We also have the instructions written up which is sometimes helpful in addition to the video: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-make-box-cushions-with-a-zipper/
      Let us know if you have any more questions and good luck!

    I can't believe everyone is commenting how detailed this is! The most complicated parts are easily the most vaguely described and quickly skipped over. It's so frustrating I want to smash my sewing machine to pieces.

      jack chatham, I agree. I had to watch this a second time to catch that the boxing strip was one long piece and not individual sides. She also forgot to mention to measure and mark where the curves need to be sewn, and also how to make sure your zipper is centered to the back of the cushion. Maybe these steps are just understood and we're not as proficient as we thought? :-/

      Michele Osborn haha, I wouldn't dare call myself proficient, I'm a total novice. That's why I found this so difficult to follow.

      Jack- I agree. I actually found sailrite's instructions (french mattress style cushions) more detailed. They clearly showed and explained each step. Yes, you needed to make the cover a bit larger than this box cushion cover because of the special seam, but I could figure that one out. I only needed this video for the zipper panel as there wasn't one in that video. I am sorry to comment about another's website on this one, but it was so clear and so well done, I had learnt a lot from them.. so hopefully it will help someone else too?
