Lovely varied episode. Positively a David Attenboroughnut moment going on there with the bird! Fair took my mind off the fact that I am sitting in my Airbnb on day one of my ten day work trip to Germany and tomorrow my newly acquired DAF33 Is delivered to home in the UK. Oh the torture! Love nz, went there for an airshow in May 2019.Travelled down the east coast from blenheim to queen's Town. 3 degrees Celsius. Scenery is mind blowing, people are wonderful and down to earth. I live in the tropics, Queens land and the cold weather is refreshing. Going back in 2021 to travel down the west coast, south island.

      "Going back in 2021..."
Going to the air show again? That would be Classic Fighters Omaka, yes? I have been to the last three and was sitting up in the stand, last year, surrounded by enthusiastic Australians. One couple told me that they love coming over here for the air shows. They said Australian aviation regulations put restrictions on what organisers and pilots can do at air shows. but, in NZ, pilots are allowed to, and I quote, "fly them like they stole them".
Be that as it may, I took my best ever desktop photo at CFO 2015, when the Mark XIV Spitfire was making its first public appearance since crashing at Wanaka nineteen years before. I got a photo of John Lamont bringing the Spitfire around the corner of the spectator area, fifty feet off the ground, in an eighty-degree bank, at 400 kph. Epic!
Later that year, I had a brief online chat with hm and told him about the photo. He replied that he had the better view...

It's somewhat ironic that the birdsong you can hear most is blackbirds and house sparrows, both of which are introduced and both of which (along with starlings and rodents and brushies) are very adaptable. The Weka is related to moorhens, coots, rails and so on (family Rallidae).

    • @mrfahrenheit3867

When we would beach the boat for a picnic in the sounds, weka's would dash out of the bush line to nick snacks or tea spoons, anything they could grab!, and I too miss the tui, but here in Bucks the sky is full of British red kites, and I mean full, beautiful.

I love the fact you can get a load that wide trundling down the road, yet there is hardly anything stuck behind it. If that was traveling along any road in the UK you can guarantee it would have several miles of traffic stuck behind it. I just love how unpopulated New Zealand is compared to the UK. A lovely place indeed.

That wide load looked more like a community centre than a house to me. Natural views can be stunning but abandoned structures or sites where man has been mucking about are always interesting for their history even if only as an example of what not to do in the future and also how quickly nature moves starts to move back if left alone. Small town NZ was well worth the wander as well

I'm enjoying your videos from NZ a lot. Many familiar places in this one!I drove the road up to Denniston as well, and it was fun to drive. The railway incline was very intriguing, we had better weather however and could look down the incline, and also visited the bottom station, but the place is slowly (I mean very slowly) under repair, those new planks are the only difference in 10 years?I bought me a book about the incline when I was there and it explained a lot.Wekas are not shy at all, we were at a campsite in Westport and a Weka came from the bushes and tried our Grolsch beer from the bottle!NiceToyota HiAce, I used to have one of this generation, but that's 25 years ago, virtually unbreakable, until someone crashes into it.

  • @Johanniscool
    @Johanniscool 4 ปีที่แล้ว

They had grand plans to develop a tourism train at Deniston. They spent millions, then priced it too high not to mention the remote location and now its all fallen over.
The incline was a marvel of engineering at the time. The full coal wagons descending the incline would pull the empty wagons back up the hill. It was also the only way up or down the hill except for a bridle track.
There’s also a burning mine further out the back down the power line track.

  • @Rupunzelsawake

I enjoyed that! I think I've never visited anywhere in NZ that feels more desolate than Denniston. You really have to go there to appreciate that. It's hard to believe a bustling town used to exist on that rocky plateau. Apparently there was so little soil up there, on the cloud shrouded plateau, that burials had to take place at the bottom of the hill!! I have some relatives buried there. My great grandfather was a foreman at the mine which I only found out afterwards. At the time of my visit I had no idea I had any connections to the area. It's a real shame it was so wet for you for your visit...not that there's much to see up there anymore. For others reading this, do visit "Coaltown " museum in Westport, if it's still there, for a good history on coal mining in the region, and on Denniston. Also, rail has an interesting history too, and is still going of course. ( There's a couple of great novels about life in Denniston "Denniston Rose" and " Heart of Coal", by Jenny Pattrick)

@Ex JW Rupunzelsawake. And lets not forget, Coal Town was the former Morleys Brewery, which was a large and successful employer of local people. During the 1950s as a young man i drove trucks for Craddocks Transport.
One of my duties occasionally was to shovel the used hops from a large open tank, onto a shute and down the shute onto the truck where i would deliver it to a local stock farm.. I also knew many men who worked at the Sullivan Mine at Denniston
and also at the Millerton and Stockton open cast and underground mines. My eldest brother was a linesman for the Post and Telegraph Department and often did repairs to telephone lines at Denniston, sometimes i accompanied him as a boy,
it was like going to another planet especially in winter, when Denniston was always shrouded in low cloud, and i often wondered why people would choose to live there. I reside in the Wellington Province now. Robert. 79yo.

It would help if the Fairmont had independent rear suspension but it doesn't. AWD would help as well - I'd love to drive along there in my Legacy Spec B. Northumberland has roads like that which I love driving on but the views aren't quite as spectacular - it pains me to say that as a proud Northumbrian but it's a fact. The key thing is to get decent tyres - yes they cost a lot but if it makes the difference between crashing and being dead or not then I'll spend the £600 for good tyres and live - thank you very much.

Even though I know this was recorded a few weeks back, I still get scared you're going to fall or otherwise injure yourself. I know I know, worrying probably far too much and after the event(s), just stay safe please. :)

I feel EXACTLY the same way! I have always had a fear of heights, but twenty years ago I had a panic attack driving over a bridge, alone. So, watching heights even on video kicks in my anxiety, something I cannot control!

The weather is all due to the Southern Alps. Wind and water comes in off the Tasman Sea onto the west coast, hits the Alps and promptly dumps all the moisture. That's why it's one of the wettest places on the planet in terms of rainfall. And why, if it's raining on the West Coast it's usually fine on the east coast, and vice versa - if the weather shifts so it's raining on the east coast then it's usually fine on the west coast.

January through to early April is when the weather settles down in NZ and becomes mostly calm and clear. As other commentators have said, the West Coast of the South Island has its own weather which backs up against the mountains - which means the East Coast is often a blazing furnace in the summer. And yup, theres a different breed of folk that live down there - think Australian outback characters or Appalachian hill billies 🤣

    • @rahowherox1177

Lol the rainfall on the west coast (of the south island) is measured in metres, compered to millimetres everywhere else. It is always raining.

Kiwis never travel from south to north on the West Coast (SI) because that is the direction that the weather moves, up the coast, so the weather stays with you. Not so good if it is raining.
We travel from north to south to break through any bad weather that moves through!
