Thanks for the trip down memory lane - I grew up not far from the large tower in Wanganui. Going to school meant careening down that huge hill on my bike everyday, but no way could I ride UP! So going home always involved riding through that tunnel and taking my bike up in the lift!

Amazing that it was pulled from its muddy grave just down near the bridge , id look at it every time we'd be in town from the early 70s onwards ,think it had been stiing there since the 50s

@@gruntabro1 It was slipped for an overhaul up by the Dublin Street bridge not so long ago; really interesting how they did it. They had to reinforce the mudflats with a raft and rail system.

Lived in Palmy North for six years when we moved from Blighty to New Zild when I was 7 years old. Compared to Sale, it was like heaven, seeing as it was mid-November and both sunny and warm!
Palmy North a is big farming centre, hence all the big buildings - my step-dad was a diesel mechanic and in the school holidays, we'd often go with him to a farm quite some distance from the city that needed a bulldozer, tractor or something repairing.

Whilst the AU Fairmont doesn’t quite have the communicative steering of a Porsche 911, I’m yet to see a Porsche with a boot load of luggage towing a caravan either.

Marvelous scenery on this part of the road trip. Engaging commentary and a delightful insight into the workings of a vintage paddle steamer. The sound of the paddles slapping through the water was mesmerising. Un-like the screams and shouts of children in the tunnel but, I would have done the same thing myself. The views from the tower? breathtaking. Great to see you back on the road.

I drive that hill to get to work. Many dawdlers, then when the overtaking lanes begin they often find 30-40kmh they never had before and then resume dawdle mode when the dual carriage way ends,(a very infuriating Kiwi behavior around the country). I had a run to work the other day from Carterton to Trentham with not a car in my way the whole time #blissful. The hill is quite enjoyable when you get a clear run.

The Burroughs Comptometer Company made those calculators that could handle sums in the millions, mainly used by Banks and financial houses, their Head office was in East Grinstead. They later became Unisys, the first wholly UK owned computer company, in the days when a mainframe computer occupied a whole floor of an office building and needed extensive cooling to operate safely, later merged with Hewlett Packard to form HP computers.

You might not know that the Toyota Levin models were named after the town of Levin where from the 1950's to 1975 race meetings where held including the Tasman series. Toyota had their first international salon car win there and have since called their sporty corolla models Levin, pronounced Lee vin.

Thanks Hubnut - good to see my home town - Palmerston North - through your eyes.. the Manawatu Gorge was destroyed by a land slip about 8 years ago - it was always having landslides and often not useable. The Saddle road that you took has been extensively improved over the past decade to cope with the traffic demand and we still think it not up to scratch. Perhaps one reason why you saw cars off the road may be due we do not test new drivers on the open road - to get a car drivers licence in NZ you do your practicle driving test only in the town boundary without any open / motorway driving as part of the driving test. As such most new drivers are only taught what they need to past the test and can then drive on any road - depending on which stage they are at the new drivers should not drive without an full licence adult as a passenger or at night - still without any requirement to experience the open road etc. pleased you got a ride on the paddle steamer - I tried with a group to do it decades ago and we went from Palmerston North to Whanganui only to find it wasn’t running due to the river being in flood with lots of floating logs - you have enthused me to try again. Hope Australia is treating you well and you still have time to smell the roses etc.

The Gorge and Saddle road is supposed to be replaced by a 4 lane expressway that runs through the wind turbine land isn't it? I think its still at the surveying/resource consent stage at the moment. Plus the government has a bit of a track record of pulling funding from roading projects.

That's exactly how it worked - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division could all be done on what was basically an adding machine.
My mother was a freelance 'comp' operator with her own machine - it was normal for the client to hire a machine as they weren't cheap, but as she had her own she could charge for the machine. IIRC it had to be serviced once a year.

Ha ha , The pronunciation of Wanganui has indeed been a battle for over 100 years. Every year,me and my mates from the Papakura Hot rod Club would make the trek to Palmy for the annual Swap meet where Hot Rodders from all over NZ would get together for a few days of merriment. Just getting there was a load of laughs as most us of drove cars where the emphasis was on high speed ,not reliability .Often loaded up with piles of crap to try and get rid of ,we often ended bringing more back than we took down. Some of the mates and myself are heading for our 7th decade but it seems like yesterday when we were leaving skid marks on the road as a mark...

When Europeans arrived in NZ, Māori had no written language, so the Europeans went about writing the language from the way words sounded. They already figured that 'Wh' made a 'Ff' so when the Whanganui tribe didn't pronounce a Ff sound at the beginning of the word, the Europeans wrote it the was it sounded, they decided Wanganui. Whanganui Iwi/tribes don't pronounce Ff. Now, both spelling variations are correct.

Car insurance is optional in NZ and powerfull / modified cars are cheap. Young guys are having fun burning rubber and crashing into stuff.

The whole of the Wairarapa has seen rapid growth in property values in the last 2-3 years...our average 1970s house in Masterton went up by about 80% in 4 years.... Greytown is seen as a bit "trendy' and now $$$ to buy or build in..... but the horrendous housing costs in Wellington mean people now are prepared to move 60--80 km north and trade that for a relaxing ( to me) trip on 1975 refurbished UK Mk2 carriages on the "Featherston Flyer" and work in town. Better climate, too.

Driving over the Rimutakas is much better going uphill either way, ...less wear on the front tyres I'm sure and gravity + engine revs does the braking... been over it more often than I wanted to in the 48 months we have just finished living in Masterton... you wandered along some back route I didn't recognise driving out of Greytown ... and then you completely skipped Masterton!! which we left only last Nov after 48 months there. ... that car you spotted lying down the hill when you were driving the Saddle Road from Woodville,,it's been there 2 years that I know of....

I'd love to both afford the cost of a 2 week vacation in NZ as well as have a job where taking that amount time off would be an option.
I'd love to go to USA as well especially driving canyon runs in CA or camp trips in a Hilux or GMC "classic Hollywood" van. Maybe even a 8+ wheeler driver included camper holiday through Saskatchewan / Nova Scotia Canada.
Baby steps... oiter town/rural NZ from footage seems like driving through Mordor if not pars of Scotland w/o the hills.

Theophilus Thistler I’m from Southern California, there are a lot of similarities between NZ and California’s landscapes, and climate. The geography of America and Canada, is awesome, and our countries are huge. If you do get to North America, be prepared to do lots of driving. Stay away from Los Angeles and San Francisco, two giant cesspools. Orange County where I live, lots of surfing 🏄‍♀️ and nice beaches to chill at. San Diego is country is also a nice place.

New Zealand is actually surprisingly urbanised. When you get out into those country towns they really only serve the local rural community, they are small and far between.

Coming from Wales, you are very wise not to get involved in pronounciation of placenames, let the locals sort it out for themselves. Amazing that the bush fires in Oz can have such far reaching effect. It's part of the reason for W.coast NZ weather being a bit wild, hot air rises in Oz, condensating above the nearest landmass = rain. Also why NZ is so green and pleasant.

They are reaching New Zealand due to the jet stream. Just shows you how these fires have a far reaching effect globally.

The "adding machine" was called a COMPTOMETER. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comptometer). Very widely used in the old days......many large businesses would have had a bank of ladies sat banging away at them adding up rows of figures ...lol
