(EP31) Extreme Weather on NZ's South Island - HubNut Goes Global

  • Dodging landslips and torrential weather, the roadtrip hits the very wet West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. My steed is a 2001 Ford Fairmont (Falcon) AU.
This is a long one, but it charters a frustrating few days where severe weather caused me some real problems. I was lucky though. This weather front destroyed roads (I'd already driven down) and caused serious flooding elsewhere on South Island. At one point, the island was split in two completely with roads washed away.
It also includes Franz Josef Glacier (at a distance) but mostly rain. Many rain.
HubNut store and support options can be found at hubnut.org - thank you.

I totay agree . Pity it wasnt possable to pump sea water to the affected areas to at least put the fires out then get drinkable water in afterwards .

WOW that rain reminds me of my short stays near the mountains of wales, as a londoner i'd never seen horizontal rain before.
On the subject of wipers, i like it when they come to a gentle rest rather than slap to a stop, well done Betty.
At 14:56 is a good time to take in Betty's aerodynamics, and they look prettty good to me!
At 23:32 great scene with the sunlit field and dark sky, one of my favourite photos i took in the 80s is a rooftop version of that.
At 13:10 like the yellow blue colour coordination of the escargo and the house. Great stuff Ian as always.

My wife and I toured NZ south island late 2006 the scenic trip from Christchurch to queenstown completely spoiled by weather like that (and a speeding fine). Although our trip north to graymouth was clear. We stopped at a beach with washed up trees at the end of the hast pass probably the same as where you stopped. We did the fox glacier by helicopter definitely a highlight. We were going to do the tour by motorcycle but changed our minds at the last minute. Hired a corolla (yawn). When we got back to Christchurch we did hire a suzuki 650 adventure thing for three days. Cost me more for it than 2 weeks for the toyota? Anyhow we rode to Arthurs pass, hannam springs, kikoura on it. Great videos you are doing I've recognised loads of places you've visited.

Trying to keep up to imagined deadlines is one of the major cause of tourist accidents in both New Zealand and in Australia, tired, in a hurry, unfamiliar roads, not a good mix.
My advice to Ian, mate, those places haven't changed in 10,000 years, a day or two later won't matter, they'll still be there.

Setting the MP3 player volume to maximum (I had to google this as the max volume had been locked (It was illegal to have maximum volume in the EU!)), and also the gizmo's volume to maximum, really helped with the engine interference. A nice video as always; many thanks. IMO it's nice driving on empty roads for a few hours but after a few days, especially long days, it just becomes boring. When the scenery is this good you can't fully appreciate whilst driving. I'm sure it must be very frustrating to have interesting destinations and road tests organised and planned with other people only to be thwarted by extreme weather. Yes; weather on the west coast is pretty awful much of the time but you don't expect it this bad at the height of summer.
However, it's all future memories for your life ahead.
You could have spent the last couple of months commuting to the same job everyday performing uninteresting work that you have little if any control over.
Weeks merge into years if you live like that.

I visited NZ in 2017 in April. Made it down to Pancake Rocks in a dense fog and gave up trying to get further south at Greymouth where the TV weather said the bad weather was due to a tropical cyclone leaving Australia. I returned to Picton where the mountains were keeping the weather out. While staying at the Picton Yacht Club, we experienced 2 earthquakes, one a 5.3 and I don't remember the other. By the time I left, another tropical cyclone was on the way. Did enjoy Picton and will be back and I have a mate in Wellington, regardz from Thailand.

I live in Oregon and owned a car without a headliner, It's an ear ringing, tinnitus causing bedlam.

Those of us who were born by the water could see where that wave at around 8:00 was going to end up, old friend! I thought you were going to do a Kinnock for a moment there... ;-)

Looks pretty typical for the West Coast, although you do seem to have had everything all at once! If it's any consolation, their winters are usually quite mild, while on the East coast in Canterbury (other side of the Southern Alps) the winters are usually quite shite. Haast Pass and driving down through the Gates of Hell are lovely bits of driving road. When they stay upright and don't fall over into a river, that is.

So many people have commented that the roads of NZ look just like Wales...
I've been catching up on some older Hubnut videos - just watched the first couple of the Skoda Favorit series and I have had the same observation in reverse - "Those Welsh roads look just like New Zealand..."

Looks like Scotland in mid summer which does drag one down. Hope blue tooth things says "tha blootooth davice iz cochnekeded" with some of these you get more interference if you charge and play a device at the same time disconnecting USB charging bit helps abit but alas no charging. All the best and happy new year from Scotland. Was 18 degs here mid winter here and quite sunny for a day or two

The average yearly rainfall in Fiordland (just south of Hubnut's travels here) can be as much as 8 metres, or twenty four feet.

Stunning scenery, I see what you mean about feeling off, with the weather. By now I expect you are okay, if not just stop, where ever you may be, talk, walk, watch TV have a tea and cake at a local Cafe.

On a mountain road, driving towards a digger thing. That usually doesn't end well, though as you weren't in a red Lamborghini, it's probably ok.

Ian, you are on the West Coast. Of course it rains there. They get 200 inches of it each year. In metric that is 5m of rain. That's a lot of wet.
A lot of Warren trusses got made during WW2 as temporary bridges, especially after D-Day to replace ones that got blown up. New Zealand's government did lots of canny buying of war surplus - lots of those trusses got used for rural bridges in New Zealand. You can see a bunch of them at 3:10, for example. WW2 surplus still in use.

I used to live on the west coast. Rained a lot. Moved to western Australia. It doesn't rain a lot, and is hot.

Falcons usually have a 70 litre tank, and usually gives between 500-600km. So I'm pretty impressed with 50 litres for 500km.

I don't trust the fuel gauge, so even though I've now got this car in the UK, I still tend to fill up at around 50 litres. She did 500kms on 50 litres yesterday in fact!
