    How much would that cost?

    Some building inspectors will not accept gallows brackets to be used because you will usually struggle to get a good enough fixing as the bricks in that area become to soft etc due to them getting heated and cooled everyday

    This might be a silly question but what happens to the rain water that falls into the chimney?

      Hi it doesn't, we fitted a product called C-cap on the pots, so they are just vents now. Altenativerly we could have removed the pots and capped the chimney, but I prefer to have some ventilation. Not worried about heat loss as this is all above the loft isulation, but the ventilation hopefully cuts down on condensation and dampness.

    Hi, could you please tell me the size of the angle iron you used and the thickness of it too. Cheers Keaton.

      Hi it was just some stuff we bought off the scrap metal place when weighing in some scrap. Not sure what it measured. and have since sold the house.

    Great video. I also have a chimney thats shared with the neighbour. in the loft it looks like an upside down letter Y.
    Question is would I need to get this done at both points where it would splits off into 2 i.e one going to the Living Room and one to the Front Room?
    The builder I had do the job has inserted 2 offcut girders and balanced them underneath where they sit on the bedroom and bathroom wall.
    Hes filled the gaps with bricks and rendered over?

      hi a λ could be supported in 2 places, or the chimney could be rebuilt up as a single unit underneath the main stack. What is most important is that it has some form of additional support. Had we had the chance to use a girder on walls for this chimney stack then we would have. Unfortunately we did not have any supporting walls underneath/nearby to use in this case.

    Can I ask how much it cost to install the gallow brackets in the loft please? Also you did it by yourself or you had a contractor to do it for you? Thanks.

    Hi, I'm wanting to do this myself also. However reading online, there is a lot of conflicting information about doing this on the cheap warning of getting 'professionals' with liability insurance, hiring structural engineers to make the necessary calculations, getting building control to sign off and ensuring party wall agreements are obtained. It's all quite off putting since the larger firms all offer this but they cost thousands. Did you have any difficulty with any of these?

    • @wowthatsamazing
      @wowthatsamazing  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jay Ww Hi it's well worth calling in building control and any strutural engineers before you start the work, as doing so later in the game can mean doing the work twice, and if anything is done wrongly it can also make a property a lot more difficult to sell! Usually a builder that builds extensions rather than doing general building work will do a better job of this as they will normally be far more aware of council procedures and requirements. If possible, it's always better to get the neighbour involved and take the stack down completely (but that can mean double costs wise) (but you gain more space to if the loft can be usable). Some inspectors can be a ball ache, but some are so nice they must be in the wrong job! We got a nice one and he just likes things to be painted up at the end, but we decided to paint it as we went along and he was happy to pass this, but we did have to repoint the wall up on either side of the chimney and a little on the chimney itself too, after the supports were in, as the old jointing was considered too weak, thanks.

      Contact local council, see what they require, it often differs from council to council!

      hi the chimney stack is shared with the neighbouring semi. if both houses were having the chimney breasts removed then yes we would have removed the chiney stack. thanks.

      @@wowthatsamazing Hi if the neighbours downstairs and upstairs chimney breast been removed thus rendering it redundant from their side then I would like to do the same but I would also like most of the loft breast removed as well to create more space for a loft conversion. Do the neighbours need to do anything in the loft from their side then?

    most usually remove the entire chimney down to the ground floor even above the roof

    It doesn't look like calculated and designed by an educated person. Why didn't you placed your gallows right under the chimney stack? Also RHS tubes as beams? You are having a laugh man.

    • @wowthatsamazing
      @wowthatsamazing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gallows should not be directly under the stack as that is the weakest part of the wall as the heat will have affected the cement over time, plus seperating them out spreads the entire load more evenly. Only flat steel was required for this, so RHS tube was a better option, although solid beams or girder would be even better.

      @@wowthatsamazing you talk nonsense man.
      Another cowboy trade shit that will fall apart after 6 months as everything made by idiots who doesn't have a degree and call them self "engineers" . I dare to say 99.99% of trade in UK doesnt have any school. 0.01% comes with entry 3 college course as they struggle with spelling and writing in their own language.
      What's the safety factor on this?

      I bought a house where the chimney breast had been removed up to the loft and the remaining stack supported by a steel across the joists. Not good. A qualified structural engineer surveyed it and recommended gallows brackets exactly like in this video.
