I have been fixing rust in New England since 1974. I worked at a GMC dealership when these were new trucks so have fixed hundreds. I have found that the best way to remove a rusted panel is to just grind the weld with a 1/4" wide stone on a die grinder. You remove the top layer only and don't have a hole or damaged metal when the rusted panel is removed.
"I know a screwdriver is not the correct tool for the job" but it works, and there's plenty of them out there to be purchased. I'm not looking forward to the rust repair in my '68 C10, but I am looking forward to the restoration process. Thanks for another great video!
Also - these are great videos because nearly everyone who owns an older truck like this probably needs to do this. I'm currently putting in new engine and trans. Bodywork is on the horizon so I appreciate your videos.
love the videos. Love the home shop builds like this that show realistic ways to build trucks for people like me as an 18yr old. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
I found your channel went back & watched all of the c10 builds. I'm caught up now. You are doing a great job, keep on keeping on. I'll be watching from now on. Take care of you & yours Buddy.....
@@paulkc10 ya....I usually cut apart, sandblast, epoxy the hell out of it and then weld new stuff on. Epoxy is usually pretty good weld thru primer....video of Chevelle I was working on is like that
Great videos. You've got more balls than I do for removing ALL the rust at one time. I'm no expert but I would be tempted to cut out one part, replace it with a new panel, weld it except for the area to be joined with the next panel, etc. Moving along one piece at a time. That way you can line up the new to the original as you go along.
@@paulkc10 thanks for the reply I actually bought a filler panel from lmc but cant find a video on how to , I wanted to see how some are doing it. I was wondering if you removed the lip on the inside of cab before you welded the patch panel in
This was really helpful! I've got a similar project, in a 71 K5 blazer. Trying to keep everything square has been a real challenge. Do you think using the original hardtop bolted down, or should I build a framework to keep the bedsides square with the front? It's kinda a big floppy mess right now.
Bro I'm not going to lie that shit looks intimidating. I would of been shitting bricks. But u hope to learn a lot from your video and maybe over come that fear
I'm subscribing. Seems like I do more rust all the time...dammit!! Lol. Ever hear of dadscustoms.com? Pretty good buys on epoxies and other stuff. I've been buying from them since early 90s. Check it out if you can. Keep it up!!!!

In the moment it’s not a ton of fun but seeing it get closer to being finished is worth the work 👍🏼
Slow progress is better than no progress! Keep moving forward, you'll have it completed in seemingly no time!
It’s getting there

In the future if you ever need to do this again, you could use a laser line to aid in marking your lines. They work great for the corners especially.
For sure, that's a good idea. I don't have one but have been looking at getting one for several other upcoming projects.
paulk_c10 , truck done yet???
paulk_c10 ,,, what about spark plug wires,,, wat did u use?? On it
I’m restoring my grandfathers old gmc... the rust on my cab was out of this world. I have a video of it on my channel...Subscribed and great work
Don't forget the front and rear cab supports the things that hold up the cab
Yep. Gonna flip the cab on its back and do the whole underside at one time
Nice job! This is exactly where I'm at. Don't forget the cab support channels under the floor that connect to pillars. Love the videos!
Gonna flip the cab on its back to clean up the underside of the floor and get the cab supports in. Then raptor liner 👍🏼 (oops, spoiler alert)
@@paulkc10 good idea!

Fine work. Thanks for sharing. GOD bless you and your family.
Was shown your video. Hope I can get it right. Rebuilding a 1979 c10 stepside Silverado from the mid west rust lots of it.
I have to agree...Midwest rust sucks....
That’s what this is. It’s everywhere!

That’s what I did on the first side. It’s all interconnected so its likely going to be in the way and make it much more difficult
Nice job, I'm still about 6 months behind you on mine learning from your skills/mistakes.
Emphasis on mistakes haha I’ve made a bunch
@@paulkc10 Hate to say it but my mistakes have been my best education.
100% agree with ya
What mistakes.? Please share mistakes so we may avoid. I have my truck tore down and will be starting on my repairs
Great vid keep up great show
Keep up the good work....
Do you have a video on how you filled your gas tank filler neck hole ?
No. Weld in a patch and smooth to finish. You can get the patch panels lots of different places
@@paulkc10 thanks for the reply I actually bought a filler panel from lmc but cant find a video on how to , I wanted to see how some are doing it. I was wondering if you removed the lip on the inside of cab before you welded the patch panel in
Nope. Tack weld and blend. Take your time. It’s a small area so too much heat will make it warp.
@@paulkc10 thanks I appreciate your feed back
Keep up the good work
I'm subscribed! It's really not that bad, my 84 K30 is worse. Great job!
If your like me I’d find the spot weld cutters AFTER I get the project finished!
They get up and walk away when you need em! Haha
Love watching your videos man. I’m working on the same project pretty much
We aren’t alone. All these trucks are rusty
paulk_c10 I’m working on a 72 Shortbed frame off right now. Doing a 6.0 swap
That appeared to be quite the pain in the ass without the spot weld cutter

Nothing has budged with the support bars I welded in. It’s a common practice. Check out @nsanehotrodz on Instagram. If he says do something, I do it.

Can u shoot me the plans for that cab dolley??
I just took measurements and built it. No plans to speak of. I believe I said all the dimensions in the video
In a different video*
Did you finish cutting bed panels?

It was kinda sad to see the rot as you tore into it.
It is 50 years old and sat outside for its entire life. Throw Michigan winters and road salt at it too. Could be much much worse.
paulk_c10 I understand. The good news is you’re fixing it. Thanks for sharing these videos, I’ve enjoyed them.
