Such a talent
Back in the seventies, I was a Ring Doctor for the South Bend Amateur Boxing Association (Texas, USA). Most of our fighter knew one another and had fought against each other at some point of their "career". I was impressed to see the mutual respect and gentleman-like behavior among these mostly Hispanic fighters (at least in this Amateur Association which was very strict on protecting our fighters). I (and the coaches, families, and supporters...) cared about the well-being and the safety of each pugilists. I did spend many nights worrying about the fate of the boxers that did get injured during a fight I supported; I made many calls to families and friends on the following days to ensure that their relative(s) was/were "OK" whether he/they won or lost. I was very impressed by the sportsmanship that united Mexican-American boxers in those days - may God bless them and my hat to the "South Bend Amateur Boxing Association"; it was a pleasure to support and help them (free of charges of course) in their pursuit of fairness and safety in the sport of boxing.

Hi Maurice, in all honesty since most Americans have no clue about their very own history, let alone their ancestry, you are right. My great grand-father moved from the "Ol' Country" to America and ended up living in Boston. According to my grand-mother, the Irish immigrants were poorly treated by their British Immigrant counterparts in Massachusetts... In an attempt to protect his family (or "our" family), my great grand-father "dropped the "O" and added the "W" into "Nowlan" but this did not change the oppression and segregation from British-American Bostonians so he moved his/my family to Hartford, CT where spent part of my life with our "new name" (to the horror and insult of our ancestors and family members back in the "Ol'Country".
I only learned about our family history and heritage about 20 years ago and I have since developed, an utmost respect for Ireland. I did fight three wars alongside Irish compatriots over the last few years (as part of NATO operations). The Irish Pilots and Naval Officers I worked with, impressed me and treated me like a "king" when they hosted me back to Ireland.
You are right, my family's real name is "O'Nolan" and I found out from my grand-mother that the repression against the Catholic Irish community is/was well "engraved" in the heart of my Irish ancestors, sadly enough possibly to this day. May Peace be with you, Maurice, whether Catholic or Protestant, you are part of what my family of origin fought for and my heart goes to you. Ciao, L

@Bee Hive Hi Bee Hive, I agree with you - what I feel the worst for are the "professionals". The Olympic/amateur fighters are "usually" very well followed, monitored, and protected - and for many amateurs, much less is at stakes than your pride or honor (unless you are aiming at the Olympics and/or Professionals. I have seen/scanned many guys "knocked out" in combat (I am a Veteran), a blow (or blast) to the head can do a lot of damage even if not apparent behaviorally at first. Peace be with you, Ciao, L

Respect to Augustus for showing that restraint. If you really love boxing, why would you want to permanently take someone out of it? He was worried there was something seriously wrong and would rather take away all head punches than risk causing dangerous head trauma. Now that’s boxing.

The fight should have immediately been stopped when that boxer grabbed the back of his head. That sounds like it could potentially be something life threatening.

Guys, Steve Smoger is probably the best referee ever, the doctor gave the go ahead and he respected the decision. It happens that the doctor was “right” because nothing life threatening just a pinch nerve in the neck.

With out any doubt. I absolutely agree with you. I watch a few rounds every week. Usually after being disappointed after watching some judges terrible decision that ruins a young boxers love for his sport. Or something like that.

I don't know. I think across combat sports in general there is are moments of respect that come from fighters who love what they do for a living. On the other end there are the disrespectful moments that come from fighters trying to prove something to the world.
If you're referring to the amount of shows of good sportsmanship then yes boxing has way more than mma but u gotta put into account that boxing's been around about a century mma maybe 40 years & only maybe 15 has it been popular

It must include Pacquiao, he always showed great sportsmanship in most if not all his fights. He refused to fight dirty even he was at the receiving end of dirty fights on several occasions. He was fouled several times, repeatedly by Agapito Sanchez, but refused to get even by fighting dirty himself as prodded and later told by Freddie Roach. He tried to help Diaz get up after knocking him out. Embraced and said nice things to Thurman after all those personal attacks before the fight. He looked to the referee to intervene, to stop the fight against Margarito after pummeling him round after round, etc.
Ivan Robbinson knew he was fighting an old legend, and was probably well aware that the main reason Chavez was fighting was to for the money as he was very blatantly past his best. much respect man.

Gotti Ward 1-2-3 are easily my favorite fights. The story is incredible. And is the ultimate show of respect in boxing.
I like that Arturo had Micky Ward lead him into the ring as part of his entourage for his next fight. Such a shame that he was murdered and it was covered up by the police. He didn't deserve that.

The first one I never knew that’s really inspiring and the last one was really nice and a good memory of both fighters
I was raised in a boxing family. My grandfather boxed in the Navy during WWII and when I was about 9 years old my uncle married a woman from Youngstown. She went to her prom with Ray and he came to the wedding. I really didnt know who I was meeting but it's a memory I have and it's really cool to have that memory.
Boxing over the years turned to wrestling and judo for me and I have been with it for the last 35 years. It's sad to see the state that combat sports has developed into. We now seem to repay poor behavior with media attention and undeserved title shots but those golden days of boxing that I loved.

Those days are in my fondest memories.
As a musician I also wrote song that I preform whenever my band plays out. It's an acoustic piece called "The Pugilist". Quite a rockin little piece. Not based on any one fight but it has a feeling of seriousness and desperation that I always got when a fight was close and both men were giving it hell!!
My favorite boxer was Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Tommy the Hitman Hearns.

I think it was a legit 50/50 that dude would have died in the ring had his opponent not ordered the ref to stop the fight. That ref should have been fired on the spot.

Every Gatti vs Ward was not only the epitome of a great boxing match but it displayed the respect that comes from two literal icons coming for each other, We miss a lot of this as fans because as fans we want to see a winner but the heart and respect displayed is what I consider to be true boxing. The "sweet science" is one thing but when you have two men throwing it all out there and both have tremendous talent is when the magic happens.
That's the deeper beauty of boxing and life itself 😥😃
