As a boxer this man was devastating. He took on the best and did really well until that fateful night v Nigel Benn. We probably will never know exactly when the damage was done, but it's left him living a life that most of us wouldn't want.
This story is a tragedy and normally in these circumstances I'd be sad and heart broken for what happened to him. However in his case, I'm not. He taped up the mouth of a Labrador and then set his fighting dogs on it. The poor creature couldn't even defend itself and was ripped to pieces all for the fun and amusement of Gerald McClellan. I'm not a believer in Karma but it does look as if in this case, a just sentence was served. I shed no tears for this man. When I die I will be leaving everything I own to the RSPCA.

The fact that this legend, a man who entertained so many and fought with so much power and heart, needs funds for his care so badly that he’s having to depend on a Gofundme...just doesn’t sit right with me. You’d imagine that anyone who was inspired by not only this man’s ability in the ring, but the tragic nature of his involuntary retirement from the sport, as well as just how incredibly sad it is that he has to live out the remainder of his days in a mentally diminished state and confined to a wheelchair, someone would have donated enough money to him and his family so that they don’t have to struggle to care for him. Mayweather walking around with a backpack full of $100k everywhere he goes, all the fighters who have come and gone who were multi-millionaires in their day and could’ve donated care to this man...I’m really just struggling to understand how a group of wealthy retired (or current) boxers who were inspired by his fights haven’t gotten together and each given some. The world is a really shitty place sometimes.
I’d also like to add that were that fight to have happened within the last 5 years, it never would’ve made it past Benn’s 1st knockdown. He was stumbling so bad and obviously disoriented, it’s beyond me how the ref didn’t notice.
It was also a big mistake for McClellan to rush in to finish a fighter as skilled and experienced as Benn after that 1st knockout. I think he was certain that he had it in the bag and threw caution to the wind.
    Damn. Just a shitty situation.

Alot of things surrounding the fight in London make absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. Gerald and Nigel while from different countries both spoke english as their primary language. That being said, what the fuck were they doing in a ring together with a referee from Italy I believe he was from but don't quote me on that but what you can quote me on is the referee did NOT speak english whatsoever and I am not sure how much english he actually understood either...
In a sport where the rules are pretty much the same worldwide, all a referee needs to know is how to control the action in the ring to do his job correctly.. however, whenever you have a fighter like Benn who was using dirty tactics like the countless punches behind the head which the announcers who were British themselves even mentioned numerous times that Nigel was repeatedly fouling Gerald to which he never issued a single warning for. Plus the several head butts were never addressed by the referee, nor did he seem to understand what Gerald was attempting to bring to his attention using gestures that had the ref been watching the fighters he would have known exactly what Gerald was compaining about but again the ref did NOTHING!! Not even when Gerald took a knee following the worst of the butts suffered during the fight did the ref make any attempt to address the situation and acted as though he was unaware that the butt had even taken place so again this man's competence is called into question as to should he have been allowed to referee such a big fight... and the answer is an obvious hell no!!! Another example of the referee's lack of competence is how he handled the situation immediately following the first knockdown in which Benn was knocked out of the ring because if you go back and watch the entire fight you will see that whenever Benn finally makes it back up to his feet he is not on solid legs as his legs are visably wobbley. The ref allows the fight to continue but here is where the shit gets bizarre and we all start to ask ourselves what the fuck is this idiot referee doing?? Once Benn has stood back up and Gerald is now moving in for the finish, the referee comes in between the two men preventing Gerald from being able to continue his attack on Nigel and this is a very suspect move as the referee is supposed to be a nuetral party inside the ring. Not cutting off the man who is coming in for the finish to prevent the hurt fighter from being finished... So this was a weird decision to see the refefee make but you can chalk it up to a number of reasons as to why he may have acted in such a way like the way it is done in his native country perhaps but I don't know what the fuck was going through his mind at the time.
To my surprise and definitely the announcers, once the referee has successfully prevented Gerald from launching another attack on Nigel by coming in between the two men with his arms spread to keep as much distance between the two, what does the referee do now? If you never saw the fight yet then you are going to think I am bullshitting you but this is true what he did next and I couldnt believe my eyes. He stepped in between the men again when Gerald was coming at Nigel to launch a finishing series of attacks but again his attempt was thrwarted by the referee who was protecting Benn without a doubt causing the announcers to exclaim "what is the referee doing? What is he doing?" Gerald was obviously frustrated by this as he tries to push the referee's hand off of him and away so that he is not preventing him from being able to launch an attack on Benn and not long after that the end of round 1 bell sounded... It was perhaps the strangest and most suspicious behavior I have ever seen from a referee in my entire life and I have wondered for years what would make a referee behave in such a way that he would appear like he was a referee in his own son's fight and was desperately using every bit of his authority to sheild him from being hurt or KO? The referee obviously was not Nigel Benn's father nor was he a friend of his who just couldn't bear to watch his friend get hurt and before that night they had never even seen each other ever... so what then? Well I am not trying to plant the seeds of conspiracy but I can't help but notice some painfully convenient coincidences like Gerald was a heavy favorite to win but most likely win in the first round as around 80% of the G Man's wins came in the first round. Once you take that into consideration then it makes a hell of a lot more sense that anyone who placed a bet on Benn to get to the 2nd round would stand to win a considerable sum of money because think about it. Everyone knew Gerald was the better fighter which he was and they also knew that Gerald would destroy him inside of 1 round which he would have had the referee not interfered numerous times to protect Benn so it was basically a fool's bet to put money on Benn making it out of the first round and if by some miracle he would make it to the 2nd then that fool's bet just turned into a handsome payday. Im not saying that someone got to the ref before the fight and bribed him with a small fortune if he just made sure that Benn sees the 2nd round unless the G Man KOs him out cold then nothing can be done but aside from this, just make sure he survives the first round and you will be compensated generously for your efforts.. We will obviously never know the truth behind one of the worst tragedies in boxing history to one of the most feared and most powerful punchers pound for pound the sport has ever seen. Julian Jackson is regarded as the hardest puncher in boxing history pound for pound but I cannot agree with that suggestion on account of I watched both fights between Gerald and Julian and have never seen anyone destroy Jackson as brutally and as violently as the G Man did and he made it look easy. I completely agree with anyone who believes that someone in the boxing world should share just a little of the riches they received during their career because fighters today can make $30million or better for a single fight while Gerald's highest earnings for a fight was $250,000 and I guarantee you that didn't even begin to cover his medical bills in London alone..
If one of the Paul brothers would donate $2 million or more to the McClellan family to help with his care and give the GMan some kind of improvement in his quality of life, i would respect that more than anything else in the world...... I am sorry this comment was a little long winded but i'll end it with this FUCK Don King! He is a parasite, a con man, a thief, a chiseler and a heartless piece of human dogshit who should have been banned from the sport years ago and these are his redeeming qualities as the others are too horrible to dare mention

I've got to say, this is by far the best career documentary I've seen about this criminally underrated phenom of a fighter. One of, if not my absolute favorite boxer to ever have stepped in the ring. I am so grateful for you making such a stellar documentary about the G Man, and all the comments from people saying they've never heard of him before but now they get to also marvel at this absolute legend and feel the inspiration. This video does him justice. His fights really were as astonishing as you made them out to be. Thank you for not holding any punches either and for your unbiased presentation of the Benn fight. I've heard he has many factors that led to the brain damage, including extreme weight cuts (he was a natural light heavy and said cutting weight was a killer for him) but the Benn fight you clearly show the insane amount of illegal punches to the back of the head, and how the ref did absolutely nothing. Definitely contributed to the brain damage significantly but he left the sport and made his peace with G Man and with the big man upstairs so one can't help but respect Benn, as well. But the G Man is the absolute legendary middleweight of all time and as an amateur middleweight myself, was an absolute inspiration for me as well as many others. Long live the King 👑 🥊

He watched/listened an got off on tying poor dogs mouths up an fed them to his pitbulls, so it's strange that he lost his eyesight an nearly all of his hearing.

Donated immediately thanks joe it’s a shame that legends like this never seem to last the ones with the most natural ability and talent always become the what if stories, he is a legend in the sport I know benn had a lot of remorse for what happened after the fact I wish boxing wasn’t so corrupt, things like this and many other instances wouldn’t happen this is probably the most dangerous active sport they need to handle things like other sports regulations because fights are still being done dirty.
